Igreja de Santa Cruz

Located on the banks of the Mondego, the Monastery of Santa Cruz is one of the oldest and most important monuments of Coimbra, founded in 1131 by the Canons Regrantes of St. Augustine outside the walls surrounding the city. D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, came here to attend religious services when he returned from his Christian Reconquest battles, and this is where his tomb is located, as well as that of his son D. Sancho I.

Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova

The Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova, also known as the Convent of Rainha Santa Isabel, is located in the parish of Santa Clara in the city, county and district of Coimbra, Portugal. It was erected in the 17th century to replace the old medieval monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, victim of periodic flooding of the Mondego river. It was a veritable monastery of Franciscan enclosure and not a simple convent. It is an important repository of Portuguese art from the 14th to the 18th centuries and houses the relics of Queen Santa Isabel, founder of the ancient monastery.
