What to expect
This Marian pilgrimage center evokes the apparitions of Our Lady to the three little shepherds: Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta, which took place on May 13, 1917. It was here that the apparitions took place. The Sanctuary includes the Chapel of Apparitions, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Prayer Room and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity. Visit to the Sanctuary and its places of interest.
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary began construction on May 13, 1928 and in 1954 it was granted the title of Basilica by Pope Pius XII. The tomb of the three shepherd children stands out here: Francisco (died in 1919), Jacinta (died in 1920) and Lúcia (who died in 2005). Francisco and Jacinta Marto were canonized at the Sanctuary of Fátima, on May 13, 2017, by Pope Francis. It was visited by Pope John Paul II (1982, 1991 and 2000), Benedict XVI (2010) and Francis (2017). You'll have free time for religious activity
The Chapel of Apparitions is located in the heart of the current Sanctuary of Fátima, it was built by the people in 1919, at the request of Our Lady during one of the apparitions. The first mass was celebrated here in 1921. The image of Our Lady marks the location of the holm oak where the shepherd children had their apparitions. It was here that the little shepherds came to pray the rosary, accompanied by other believers. You have free time for religious activity.
Located in the Sanctuary of Fátima, the Church of the Holy Trinity was inaugurated in 2007 with the aim of housing the large number of pilgrims who intended to attend liturgical celebrations at the Sanctuary. The Greek architect Alexandros Tomazis signed this project, and here stands out the 8 meter high bronze main door dedicated to Christ, the tiles of the Apostles designed by Siza Vieira and the High Cross by the German Robert Schad, in bronze measuring 34 meters high, located outside the building.
Visit to the house of the 3 little shepherds.
Having been the first capital of the kingdom of Portugal, Coimbra stands out for its historical, cultural and academic interest, and is today the main Portuguese university center. This is how in 2013 UNESCO classified the University of Coimbra as a World Heritage Site. It is in the heart of this city that you will also find the Monastery of Santa Cruz, where the tombs of the first two kings of Portugal are located.
