Today was all about settling into the heart of Gashaka Gumti National Park (Transit Camp). The day was a mix of culinary delights and the simple joy of being surrounded by nature, a perfect blend that made for a memorable experience.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Cactus Restaurant in Abuja. Aisha was particularly thrilled with the pastries, a sweet start to our adventurous day. Tunde and Funke enjoyed the continental options, fueling up for the day's activities. It’s always a pleasure to find a place that caters to everyone's tastes. With our stomachs full, we set off for Gashaka Gumti National Park. The drive was scenic, offering glimpses of Nigeria’s diverse landscapes. The anticipation of reaching the park grew with every mile, and the kids were especially excited, pointing out various sights along the way. I must admit, Aisha seemed more relaxed already, a welcome change from her usual hectic schedule as a nurse. I was glad to offer her this escape.
For lunch, we decided to try Wakkis Food in Abuja. This restaurant is known for its Indian, Oriental, and Nigerian dishes. We opted for a mix of everything, from chicken biryani to local Nigerian cuisine. The aroma alone was enough to make our mouths water. Tunde, who is usually picky, devoured the biryani, while Funke enjoyed the Nigerian dishes. Aisha and I appreciated the flavorful spices and the overall dining experience.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
After lunch, we continued our drive towards Gashaka Gumti. The landscape transformed as we approached the park, with lush greenery and rolling hills replacing the urban scenery. The kids were glued to the windows, spotting various birds and animals along the way. I even managed to capture a few decent shots with my camera, hoping to add them to my travel blog.
Finally, we arrived at the Gashaka Gumti National Park Transit Camp. The camp was a welcome sight after our long journey. We quickly set up our tents, a task that Tunde and Funke eagerly took on. Aisha and I supervised, making sure everything was in order. Camping has always been a bonding experience for our family, a chance to connect with each other and nature.

As the sun began to set, we decided to visit the Gashaka Gumti National Park Transit Camp bar. It was a cozy spot, perfect for unwinding after a day of travel. We ordered some drinks and snacks, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. The kids played some board games we brought along, while Aisha and I chatted about our plans for the next few days.
For dinner, we decided to try The Hungryman Restaurant in Abuja. Although we were already at the transit camp, we wanted to sample some more local cuisine before fully immersing ourselves in the park. The Hungryman Restaurant is known for its diverse menu, featuring everything from breakfast options to dinner dishes. We ordered a mix of Nigerian and international dishes, satisfying everyone's cravings. The restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere, making it perfect for a family dinner.

As the evening drew to a close, we returned to our campsite at the Transit Camp. The night sky was clear, and the stars were out in full force. We sat around a small campfire, roasting marshmallows and sharing stories. The kids were fascinated by the constellations, and I did my best to explain them, drawing on my limited knowledge of astronomy.
Aisha shared stories of her childhood in Nigeria, painting vivid pictures of life in Wamba, my own birth city. It’s moments like these that make our family trips so special, a chance to connect with our roots and create lasting memories. As I looked around at my family, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. Despite the challenges of living in a new country, we have managed to maintain our connection to Nigeria, a part of our identity that we cherish.
Before heading to bed, I took a moment to reflect on the day. The Transit Camp was more than just a stopover; it was a gateway to the heart of Gashaka Gumti National Park. The experiences we had today, from the culinary delights in Abuja to the peaceful moments at the campsite, were all part of our journey, a journey that was bringing us closer to nature and each other.
I am particularly grateful that Aisha is getting a much-needed break from her demanding job. As a registered nurse, she works tirelessly to care for others, often sacrificing her own well-being. This trip is a chance for her to recharge and reconnect with her roots, a gift that I hope will rejuvenate her spirit. I am also happy that Tunde and Funke are experiencing the beauty of Nigeria, a country that is an integral part of their heritage.
Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Gashaka Gumti National Park, exploring the Gashaka film production and visiting the Gashaka Gumti office [Gashaka gumti office]. As I lay in my tent, listening to the sounds of the night, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for the days to come. Gashaka Gumti National Park was a place of immense beauty and wonder, and I was eager to explore every inch of it with my family. The challenges of navigating the park without a hotel added to the adventure, a chance to test our resilience and create memories that would last a lifetime. I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the wildlife we would encounter and the landscapes we would discover.
The Transit Camp experience has been enriching, allowing us to appreciate the simple joys of life – good food, good company, and the beauty of nature. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences are the ones that are unplanned, the detours that lead to unexpected discoveries.
