A Day of Discovery in Nigeria's Highlands
Today was a day of exploration and immersion in the natural beauty of Nigeria. Leaving the comfort of our temporary Abuja accommodations, we ventured into the highlands to visit the Ngel Nyaki Forest Reserve. The anticipation was palpable as we set out, and the reality of the experience exceeded all expectations. This reserve, a jewel on the Mambilla Plateau, offered a serene escape and a profound connection with nature that my family and I will cherish forever.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tulip Bistro in Abuja. Aisha, Tunde, Funke, and I enjoyed a fusion of Lebanese, Italian, and Mediterranean cuisine, which was an excellent start to our adventurous day. The contemporary ambiance and the chef-inspired creations set a positive tone, and we were all eager to explore what the day had in store for us. We savored the moment, knowing that the experiences ahead would be vastly different from our everyday Ottawa routines. It's these contrasts that make travel so enriching, and I was glad to share it with my family.

After breakfast, we set off towards the Ngel Nyaki Forest Reserve. The drive itself was an experience, offering glimpses of Nigeria’s diverse landscapes. As we drove, I couldn't help but reflect on my childhood in Wamba, remembering the simpler times and the strong connection to nature that was an integral part of my upbringing. I wanted my children to experience that same connection, to appreciate the beauty and fragility of the natural world.
Upon arriving at the Ngel Nyaki Forest Reserve, we were immediately struck by the tranquility and the sheer density of the forest. The reserve, located on the Mambilla Plateau, stands at an elevation of between 1,400 and 1,600 meters, contributing to its unique climate and biodiversity. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the bustling city of Abuja. The forest is known for its impressive stand of montane and sub-montane vegetation, home to over 24 endangered plant species. As a software engineer, I spend most of my days surrounded by technology, so immersing myself in such untouched natural beauty was incredibly refreshing.
The forest whispered tales of ancient times, a sanctuary where nature reigned supreme.
We embarked on a guided hike through the reserve, led by a local expert who shared fascinating insights about the flora and fauna of the region. He pointed out various plant species, explaining their traditional uses and ecological importance. I was particularly intrigued by the Entandrophragma angolense, Lovoa trichilioides, and Prunus africana, all endangered plant species thriving within the reserve. The guide's knowledge was truly impressive, and his passion for conservation was infectious. I found myself making mental notes, eager to share these newfound facts on my blog.
The reserve is also home to the endangered Nigerian chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes subsp. Although we didn't spot any chimpanzees during our hike, the possibility of encountering them added an element of excitement to our exploration. Tunde was particularly enthusiastic, his eyes scanning the treetops, hoping for a glimpse of these elusive creatures. Funke, on the other hand, was more interested in the birds. The Ngel Nyaki Forest Reserve is recognized as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International, boasting a rich variety of avian species. She managed to capture some stunning photographs, promising to add them to her growing collection.
As we walked deeper into the forest, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and humility. The towering trees, the vibrant undergrowth, and the symphony of sounds created an immersive experience that was both humbling and invigorating. It was a stark reminder of the importance of preserving such natural habitats for future generations. I thought about Aisha and her dedication as a nurse, always caring for others. This trip was as much for her to unwind as it was for us to connect with nature.
After our hike, we drove back to Abuja, our minds filled with the day’s experiences. For lunch, we stopped at Nkoyo, a restaurant known for its authentic African, continental, and Indian cuisine. The rustic, inviting atmosphere, adorned with traditional African art, provided a perfect setting to relax and reflect on our forest adventure. We savored a variety of dishes, from traditional Nigerian fare to Indian favorites, each bite bursting with flavor and spice. The warm atmosphere and pleasing piano music added to the overall experience. Aisha particularly enjoyed the Indian options, a welcome change from her usual healthy meals. Tunde and Funke were captivated by the traditional African dishes, eager to try new flavors and textures. It was a delightful culinary experience that complemented our day of exploration perfectly.

In the late afternoon, we visited Naija Gift Land, a gift shop in Wuse, Abuja, to pick up some souvenirs. I wanted to find something that would remind us of our trip and the unique experiences we had shared as a family. The shop offered an eclectic assortment of handcrafted goods and traditional Nigerian artifacts, reflecting the vibrant culture and creativity of local artisans. We spent some time browsing the shelves, admiring the intricate designs and vibrant colors. In the end, we purchased a few small items, each carrying a special memory of our time in Nigeria. Funke chose a beautiful piece of fabric with traditional patterns, while Tunde opted for a handcrafted wooden sculpture. Aisha selected some local spices, eager to recreate the flavors of Nigeria back home in Ottawa. I picked up a small, intricately carved chess set, a nod to my favorite pastime.

For dinner, we decided to try Zuma Grill, located within the Transcorp Hilton Hotel. This fine dining restaurant specializes in expertly prepared grilled dishes, showcasing both local and international flavors. The elegant atmosphere and attentive service created a refined yet comfortable setting. We indulged in a selection of grilled meats, seafood, and vegetarian options, each cooked to perfection using high-quality ingredients. The sommelier recommended a carefully curated wine to pair with our meal, further elevating the dining experience. The elegant ambiance, complete with ambient lighting and a fountain view, made for a perfect romantic backdrop. Aisha and I enjoyed a quiet moment, reminiscing about our journey and the beauty of the day. The kids were equally impressed with the culinary offerings, declaring it one of the best meals they had ever had.

I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect with my roots and share this experience with my family. It was a day that would stay with us long after we returned to Ottawa.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Gashaka Gumti National Park Transit Camp, continuing our exploration of Nigeria’s natural wonders.
