Waterfalls and Culinary Delights
Today was a symphony of nature's grandeur and the subtle notes of Japanese cuisine. Yakushima continues to unveil its beauty, one waterfall and one delicious meal at a time. It’s a journey of discovery, and I'm relishing every moment.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Matsutake. Leaving my guesthouse early, I was eager to experience the island's famed waterfalls. The promise of cascading water amidst lush greenery was too enticing to ignore. I had a traditional Japanese breakfast, which included grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. The restaurant had a cozy, authentic atmosphere, and I took my shoes off before stepping onto the tatami floor.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to Senpiro Falls. The journey itself was a treat, with winding roads offering glimpses of the island's stunning coastline. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. As I approached the falls, the sound of rushing water grew louder, building the suspense.

Senpiro Falls is truly a sight to behold. The water plunges down a 60-meter drop, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The sheer scale of the granite rock face, said to resemble a thousand people holding hands, is awe-inspiring. I spent a good hour simply taking in the view, feeling the spray on my face and listening to the thunderous roar of the water. The observation deck provided a perfect vantage point, and I captured numerous photos, trying to encapsulate the grandeur of the scene. The falls were especially powerful due to the recent rains, making the experience even more dramatic.
The beauty of Yakushima lies not only in its majestic landscapes but also in the simple, authentic experiences it offers.
Next on my itinerary was Ohko Waterfall, located on the western side of the island. The drive took me through dense forests and past quaint villages, offering a glimpse into the local way of life. Ohko Waterfall is considered one of Japan's best waterfalls, and I was eager to see it for myself. As I approached, I could hear the distinct roar of the water, a deep, resonating sound that promised something spectacular.

Ohko Waterfall did not disappoint. At 88 meters, it's the island's tallest waterfall, cascading down in two streams into an emerald-green pool below. The sight was simply breathtaking. I walked along the rocks near the basin, feeling the cool spray on my skin. The power of the water was palpable, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for nature's force. The area around the falls was perfect for a picnic, and I saw several families enjoying the tranquil atmosphere.
After spending the morning chasing waterfalls, my stomach began to rumble. Lunch was at Kamogawa Restaurant, a local favorite known for its fresh seafood and traditional Japanese dishes. I decided to try the flying fish set meal, a Yakushima specialty. The fish was grilled to perfection, with a smoky flavor that complemented its delicate texture. The set meal also included miso soup, rice, and pickled vegetables, providing a satisfying and authentic taste of the island's cuisine. It was interesting to try the Kamenote, goose barnacle, which had a surprisingly shrimp-like taste. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere.

In the late afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of relaxation before dinner. I found a quiet spot by the coast, where I could watch the waves crashing against the shore. The sound of the ocean was soothing, and I spent some time reflecting on my journey so far. Yakushima has a way of slowing things down, allowing you to appreciate the simple things in life.
For dinner, I ventured to Il Mare, an Italian restaurant that had been recommended to me by several locals. It seemed like an unusual choice on a Japanese island, but I was curious to see what it had to offer. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of pasta dishes and pizzas made with local ingredients. I opted for the seafood pasta, which was delicious. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the seafood was fresh and flavorful. It was a delightful fusion of Italian and Japanese cuisine, and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. I learned that the restaurant had relocated to its current spot near the airport to better serve travelers, which I thought was a thoughtful touch.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to experience Yakushima's nightlife at Ganta, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere and extensive drink menu. The bar was located near Miyanoura harbor, and it was easy to find. I ordered a local craft beer and chatted with some of the other patrons, who included both locals and fellow travelers. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and I felt a sense of camaraderie with everyone there. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to visit the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall and Inakahama Beach. The opportunity to learn more about these fascinating creatures and relax on the beach is something I'm greatly anticipating. I also plan to visit YAWARACA “The Scent of Yakushima LAB” to experience the unique aromas of the island. For meals, I'm looking forward to trying Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan for breakfast, Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter for lunch, and Subarashi Indian Restaurant for dinner. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and new experiences.
