A Day of Discovery in Essaouira
Today was a day of adventure and exploration, a perfect blend of nature, history, and culinary delights that Essaouira has so generously offered. From horseback riding along the coast to delving into the mysteries of Mogador Island and savoring the local cuisine, it was a day filled with unforgettable moments shared with Aoife and Róisín.
Our morning began with an early start, fueled by excitement and a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Sayef. This little gem, tucked away in a small alley off the main street, was a delightful discovery. The warm welcome and the aroma of Moroccan spices instantly made us feel at home. I started with a traditional harira soup, a zesty lentil and chickpea soup that warmed me from the inside out. Aoife opted for the grilled fish, while Róisín, ever the adventurous one, chose the squid tagine. Each dish was a testament to the freshness of the local ingredients and the skill of the chef. It's these simple, authentic experiences that truly make a trip memorable.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set off for Zouina Cheval, a horse riding stable known for its exceptional horses and well-organized tours. I must admit, I was a bit nervous. It had been years since I last rode a horse, and the thought of galloping along the Atlantic coast was both exhilarating and slightly daunting. Aoife, always the supportive wife, reassured me with a gentle squeeze of my hand. Róisín, of course, was thrilled; she's always been an avid animal lover.

We arrived at Zouina Cheval and were greeted by Najib, the owner, a passionate equestrian who clearly loves his horses. He introduced us to our steeds for the day: I was paired with a gentle Arab Barb, Aoife with a calm mare, and Róisín with a spirited stallion. After a brief introduction to the basics of riding, we set off, following Najib along a trail that led towards the coast. The feeling of the wind in my hair and the rhythmic sound of the horses' hooves on the sand was incredibly liberating. We rode along the beach, the waves crashing beside us, and then ventured into the dunes, the landscape shifting and changing with every turn. Róisín, with her natural confidence, was soon galloping ahead, while Aoife and I enjoyed a more leisurely pace, soaking in the stunning scenery.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones that take you back to simpler times, connecting you with nature and the rhythm of life. After our exhilarating ride, we decided to explore Ile de Mogador, the island just off the coast of Essaouira. Although landing on the island requires special permission as it is a protected nature reserve, we were able to admire it from afar and learn about its rich history. From the beach, we could see the ancient fortifications that once served as a strategic port, imagining the Carthaginian traders who established a trading post here in the 5th century BC. I explained to Róisín how Juba II established a Tyrian purple factory there, processing shells to dye the purple stripe in Imperial Roman Senatorial togas. The island, also known as the Îles Purpuraires, is now a sanctuary for Eleonora's falcons, and we tried to spot them with our binoculars. The salty breeze carried whispers of the island's past, a reminder of the layers of history that permeate this enchanting region.

Next on our itinerary was Ranch de Diabat, a place recommended for its unique blend of activities. We opted for a camel ride, a gentle and swaying journey through the dunes and along the Oued Ksob river. The camels, with their serene demeanor and soft, padded feet, provided a different perspective on the landscape. As we swayed along, I couldn't help but think of my homeland, Malaysia, and the similarities between the desert landscapes and some of the coastal regions there. It was a moment of connection, a reminder that no matter where we are in the world, there are always threads that tie us together.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way back to Essaouira, our hearts full of the day's adventures. But the day was not over yet. Dinner awaited us at Restaurant Baghdad & Cooking Class, a hidden gem known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and cozy atmosphere. Finding the restaurant was a bit of an adventure in itself, tucked away in a small room off the main street. But once inside, we were greeted with warmth and the enticing aroma of tagines and spices.

We started with fresh salads and warm bread, followed by a chicken tagine with preserved lemons and olives, and a seafood tagine brimming with the flavors of the sea. The portions were generous, and the prices incredibly reasonable. As we savored each bite, we chatted with the friendly staff, learning about their passion for cooking and their dedication to using fresh, local ingredients. It was a truly authentic Moroccan dining experience, one that we will cherish for years to come. The restaurant is indeed a hidden gem, offering delicious and affordable Moroccan food in a cozy setting.
After dinner, we strolled through the medina, the sounds of Gnawa music filling the air. We couldn't resist stopping at Histoire de Filles, a charming concept store that blends fashion, artisan crafts, and design. Aoife and Róisín browsed the unique clothing and accessories, while I admired the intricate craftsmanship of the local artisans. Róisín picked up a couple of hand-embroidered T-shirts, while Aoife found a beautiful silver necklace. I was tempted by the Yallah zipped sweats, but resisted, knowing that my suitcase was already overflowing.

As we walked back to our riad, the stars twinkled above us, casting a magical glow over the city. Today was a reminder of the beauty and diversity of Essaouira, a place that has captured our hearts with its charm, its history, and its warm hospitality. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the watersports scene at Explora Watersports, visit Tool Plääzil, and discover the Dar Sultan Palace. I am also keen to sample a drink at Alma bar. But for now, it's time to rest and dream of the adventures that await us.
Reflecting on the day, I am reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences, of stepping outside our comfort zones and allowing ourselves to be swept away by the magic of travel. Whether it's galloping along a beach, exploring an ancient island, or savoring a delicious meal, it's the moments of connection and discovery that make life truly rich. And as I drift off to sleep, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy sunglasses and a hat tomorrow; I realised I had forgotten them when packing, and the sun here can be quite strong! I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures!
