Waves, Wind, and Whispers of the Past

Today was a day of embracing both the exhilarating present and the captivating echoes of history here in Essaouira. It’s amazing how a single day can hold such diverse experiences, from battling the Atlantic waves to wandering through the remnants of a Sultan's palace. The weather was comfortable, with temperatures hovering around 20°C, making it perfect for both water sports and exploration.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Three Little Birds. Aoife enjoyed a Moroccan omelette, while Róisín opted for a club sandwich. I stuck to my usual, a simple croissant and coffee, fueling up for the day ahead. The cafe was charming, with its vibrant mosaic decor and a welcoming atmosphere that made us feel right at home.

With breakfast done, it was time for some adventure at Explora Watersports. Róisín, ever the thrill-seeker, was eager to try kitesurfing. I decided to watch from the sidelines, offering moral support and capturing photos, while Aoife enjoyed a leisurely walk along the beach. The wind was a bit hit or miss, but when it blew, it was strong enough for Róisín to catch some impressive air. She had a blast, and I must admit, I was a little envious of her bravery. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll give it a try, though I suspect I'll be spending more time in the water than on the board!

The best journeys are those that challenge us, connect us to history, and leave us with a profound sense of wonder.

After working up an appetite with all the water sports, we headed to Umia Restaurant for lunch. The restaurant was chic and intimate, with a stylish interior and an open kitchen. We decided to try their 'sharing food' concept, ordering a selection of starters, including the highly recommended crab brioche and chocolate mousse. The food was delicious, a fusion of Mediterranean and Moroccan flavors that delighted our taste buds. The service was also excellent, with our waiter, Mohammed, making our evening so very connected and joyous. Aoife was particularly impressed with the Gnaoua mural, a stunning piece of art that added to the restaurant's unique charm.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set off to explore Dar Sultan Palace. Located near Diabat, the palace is a remnant of Essaouira's royal history. As we approached, we could see the European-style architecture, blended with traditional Moroccan design. The palace, once a residence of Sultan Sidi Mohammed Bin Abdullah, now stands in a deteriorated state, partially buried by sand. It was fascinating to wander through the ruins, imagining the lives of the sultans and dignitaries who once resided here. Despite its condition, the palace still exuded a sense of grandeur and history, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The wind started to pick up as the afternoon progressed, creating a dramatic atmosphere around the crumbling walls. Róisín, ever the history enthusiast, was captivated by the stories of foreign missions and illustrious residents that once graced the palace. Aoife, with her keen eye for detail, admired the huge glass windows installed by Dutch craftsmen, remnants of a bygone era. I couldn't help but feel a sense of melancholy, imagining the palace in its former glory, a testament to the passage of time and the impermanence of even the grandest structures.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Essaouira, ready for an evening of relaxation and good food. Before dinner, we decided to stop by Alma for a drink. This tapas bar and restaurant had a vibrant atmosphere, with live music setting the mood. I enjoyed a New Fashioned, a twist on the classic cocktail with a mild banana flavoring, while Aoife savored a Mama Quilla, a fruity drink with a sour and salty aftertaste. Róisín, of course, went for something more adventurous, a fiery Almarita with togarashi Timur salt dust. The music was fantastic, a blend of Moroccan and Mediterranean influences that created a perfect backdrop for our pre-dinner drinks.

For dinner, we chose La Coupole Essaouira Beach, an arty and eco-friendly beachfront restaurant with a view of Mogador Island. The restaurant had a sunny terrace, a contemporary bar, and a cozy atmosphere, all overlooking the beach and the port of Essaouira. We started with some fresh oysters from Oualidia, followed by a delicious seafood paella. The food was excellent, and the view of the sunset over the ocean was simply breathtaking. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore added to the ambiance, creating a truly magical dining experience. As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Essaouira.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll along the beach, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the sound of the waves. The sky was clear, and the stars were shining brightly, creating a romantic atmosphere. We talked about our plans for tomorrow, our last day in Essaouira. We're planning to visit Place du Marché aux Grains, Harbour Scala, and Gallery Kasbah. Róisín is also keen to do some souvenir shopping at Koulchi Concept Store before we head back to Dublin. It's hard to believe our trip is coming to an end. Essaouira has captured our hearts with its blend of culture, cuisine, and coastal beauty, and we're already planning our return.

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can still feel the sand between my toes and the taste of the salty sea air on my lips. Today was a day of contrasts, a day of adventure and reflection, a day that perfectly encapsulates the magic of Essaouira. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but wonder what tomorrow will bring. Whatever it is, I know it will be another unforgettable experience in this enchanting city.
