Whispers of Water and Echoes of the Past

Today was a day of contrasts, weaving together the raw, untamed beauty of Yakushima's nature with the quiet stories held within its history. I found myself drawn into the island's narrative, a blend of rushing waterfalls, ancient artifacts, and the simple, comforting flavors of local cuisine. It was a day that settled into my soul, leaving me with a deeper connection to this enchanting place.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. I decided to try their famed grilled flying fish. It was a delightful experience, the fish was incredibly fresh, and the market itself buzzed with a friendly, local atmosphere. I even picked up a few small souvenirs, though I'm already regretting not buying more! It's always a challenge to find the perfect balance between mementos and manageable luggage.

Fueled and ready, I set off to find Ryujin Falls. The drive itself was a treat, winding through lush greenery, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and cedar. The falls were a bit hidden from the road, requiring a short but invigorating trek through the forest. And what a reward it was! Ryujin Falls, though not the tallest on the island at around 30 meters, possessed a serene beauty. The water cascaded down the rocks, creating a constant, soothing roar that filled the air. The sunlight dappled through the canopy, illuminating the mist and creating a magical, almost ethereal atmosphere.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet whispers of nature and the echoes of history.

I spent a good hour simply sitting on a nearby rock, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of the falls. It's moments like these, surrounded by nature's artistry, that make me feel truly alive and connected. It reminds me of why I love being a wildlife photographer – the chance to witness and document the beauty and fragility of our planet. Liam always teases me about how long I can spend just staring at a single leaf or a drop of water, but it's in those details that I find the most inspiration.

After the tranquility of Ryujin Falls, I decided to immerse myself in the island's history at the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. Located near the Miyanoura River, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into Yakushima's past. The exhibits ranged from Edo Period documents to traditional wood and wicker tools, offering a comprehensive overview of the island's cultural heritage. I was particularly intrigued by the displays on the local festivals, especially the vibrant costumes and the rice straw rope used in tug-of-war contests between villages. It's amazing how much history and tradition is packed into this small island.

The museum also had a section dedicated to the nearby Kuchinoerabu Island, complete with a replica of a traditional house built before World War II. It gave me a real sense of how the islanders lived and worked in the past. While the exhibits were primarily in Japanese, the English pamphlets provided were quite helpful. I did wish I had brushed up on my Japanese a bit more before the trip, though. It's always more enriching to experience a culture in its native language.

For lunch, I ventured to Il Mare, an Italian restaurant that had been recommended to me. The restaurant had a charming, rustic ambiance, and the aroma of freshly baked pizza filled the air. I opted for a seafood pasta dish, eager to sample the local flavors with an Italian twist. The pasta was cooked to perfection, and the seafood was incredibly fresh, a testament to the island's rich marine resources. It was a delightful and unexpected culinary experience.

As evening approached, I decided to try Kotobuki for dinner. Finding it was a bit of an adventure, tucked away off the main road, but the effort was well worth it. The restaurant had a traditional Japanese interior, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I had made a reservation in advance, as recommended, and was treated to a set menu that showcased the day's freshest ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, both visually and gastronomically. The flavors were subtle yet complex, a true reflection of Japanese culinary artistry. The setting was outstanding and the homely Japanese interior felt like I had stepped back in time, the perfect place to take a time out from the everyday, relax and talk.

After dinner, I decided to check out Hitomekuri, a local bar known for its unique atmosphere and selection of drinks. It was a cozy spot, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. I enjoyed a local craft beer, savoring the unique flavors and reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar had a mix of locals and tourists, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere.

As I sipped my beer, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this solo journey. It's allowed me to connect with Yakushima on a deeper level, to explore its hidden corners and to appreciate its unique blend of nature and culture. It's also given me the space to reflect on my life back in Banff, my relationship with Liam, and my passion for wildlife photography. Sometimes, a solo trip is exactly what one needs to recharge and gain a fresh perspective.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse and Ohko Waterfall. I'm particularly excited about Ohko Waterfall, as it's one of Japan's 100 best waterfalls and the largest on Yakushima. I'm also hoping to find some time to visit the Wood Shop Kikori, as I'm always on the lookout for unique, handcrafted souvenirs.

As I write this, the sounds of Yakushima fill the night – the gentle rustling of leaves, the distant murmur of the ocean, and the occasional chirping of insects. It's a symphony of nature that soothes the soul and lulls me into a peaceful slumber. I'm grateful for this day, for the beauty I've witnessed, and for the connections I've made. Yakushima, you've captured my heart.

I think I will buy some insect repellent before I head out tomorrow, though!
