Waterfalls and Ancient Traditions

Today was a day of embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Yakushima and diving into its rich cultural heritage. It's amazing how much this island offers, from cascading waterfalls to the intricate art of tatami making. Liam, Nadia, and I set out with a sense of adventure, ready to soak in every moment.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Smiley. The cozy café, a short walk from Anbo Port, was the perfect spot to fuel up for the day's adventures. I enjoyed a freshly brewed coffee, while Nadia devoured a delicious muffin. Liam opted for a sandwich. The warm atmosphere and friendly service made it a delightful start to our morning.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to chase waterfalls, our first stop being the majestic Ohko Waterfall. The drive itself was an experience, winding through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the island's stunning coastline. As we approached the falls, the sound of the cascading water grew louder, building anticipation.

Ohko Waterfall, one of Japan's best 100 waterfalls, is truly a sight to behold. The water plunges 88 meters down a cliff, creating a powerful and awe-inspiring spectacle. Nadia was mesmerized by the sheer force of nature, her eyes wide with wonder. We walked along the rocks near the basin, feeling the cool spray on our faces – a welcome respite from the humid air. The vibrant green of the surrounding forest provided a stunning contrast to the white water, making it a photographer's dream.

Next on our waterfall itinerary was Senpiro Falls. This waterfall is renowned for its elegant cascade and the massive granite rock face over which it flows. As we approached, the V-shaped valley came into view, with the 60-meter waterfall gracefully descending into the depths. The smooth granite rock, shaped over centuries by the relentless flow of water, was a sight to behold.

The viewing area offered a panoramic vista of the falls and the surrounding landscape. Nadia, ever the explorer, was fascinated by the rock formations and the way the water carved its path. Liam and I took a moment to simply soak in the tranquility of the surroundings, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty.

After our waterfall adventures, we decided to immerse ourselves in Yakushima's cultural side with a visit to Yakushima No Kokusan Tatami Nakajima Tatami Shop. I've always admired the artistry and craftsmanship of tatami mats, and I was eager to learn more about the process.

The shop was a treasure trove of traditional Japanese crafts. The owner, a skilled tatami artisan, welcomed us warmly and shared his knowledge with passion. He explained the intricate process of weaving the rush grass and constructing the mats, a tradition passed down through generations. Nadia was particularly intrigued by the colorful fabric borders, known as tatami-beri, and the various patterns and designs.

We even had the opportunity to try our hand at making a small tatami coaster. It was a humbling experience, realizing the skill and precision required to create these beautiful and functional pieces. I purchased a small tatami mat to bring back to Kingston, a reminder of our time in Yakushima and the artistry we encountered.

As the day drew to a close, our stomachs began to rumble, leading us to Subarashi Indian Restaurant for dinner. It might seem unusual to find an Indian restaurant in a remote Japanese island, but the aromas wafting from the kitchen were too enticing to resist. We were not disappointed ! The menu offered a wide array of Indian and Nepalese dishes, with plenty of vegetarian options for me. Liam and Nadia enjoyed flavorful curries, while I savored a delicious vegan eggplant curry, making sure to specify no dairy when ordering. The friendly service and the cozy atmosphere made it a perfect end to our day.

Before heading to dinner, we had lunch at Kamogawa Restaurant. We enjoyed local dishes such as flying fish. It was a no-frills experience, but the food was delicious and the atmosphere was authentic, with locals sharing the space.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the incredible diversity of Yakushima. The island seamlessly blends natural wonders with cultural experiences, offering something for everyone. From the thundering Ohko Waterfall to the serene Senpiro Falls, and the intricate tatami mats to the unexpected delight of Indian cuisine, Yakushima has captured our hearts.

Tomorrow, we're looking forward to exploring Yakushima's coastal side, with a visit to the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall and Inakahama Beach. Nadia is particularly excited about seeing the sea turtles, and I am eager to learn more about the island's marine life. We'll also be stopping by Gallery KIANU, hoping to find more unique souvenirs to remind us of this incredible journey.
