Family Adventure in Kakum National Park, Ghana
Day 11: Farewell Ghana: Reflecting on Our Family's Eco-Adventure
Aya and her family conclude their unforgettable journey in Ghana, exploring Ankasa Park, savoring local cuisine, and embracing Ghanaian culture.
Saying Goodbye to Ghana's Wonders
Our eleven-day journey through Ghana has come to an end, and what an incredible adventure it has been! From the heights of Kakum's canopy walkway to the depths of its forests, we've immersed ourselves in the beauty and culture of this amazing country. Today, our final day, was a blend of exploration, reflection, and savoring the last moments of our Ghanaian experience.
We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Taste N Tell in Cape Coast. I opted for jollof rice, remembering the locals' recommendation, and it was indeed bursting with authentic flavors. Liam enjoyed some spicy fried plantains, while Nadia devoured a plate of grilled tilapia. Fuelled up and ready for our last adventure, we set off to explore Ankasa Game Reserve & Nini-Suhien National Park.

The drive to Ankasa was an experience in itself, with the landscape transforming from bustling towns to serene countryside. As we approached the park, the air grew thick with humidity, and the sounds of the forest enveloped us. Ankasa Game Reserve & Nini-Suhien National Park, a jewel of Ghana's biodiversity, sits close to the border with Côte d'Ivoire. This remote protected area is a haven of tropical evergreen rainforest, boasting an array of plant and animal species. I was particularly excited, knowing that this area likely holds the richest biodiversity in Ghana.

We embarked on a guided hike through the forest, eager to soak in the sights and sounds of this unique ecosystem. The sheer variety of plant life was astounding, with towering trees, vibrant flowers, and a symphony of green in every direction. Nadia was fascinated by the butterflies, of which the reserve boasts over 600 species. Liam, ever the keen birder, kept his binoculars glued to his eyes, hoping to spot some of the park's 190 bird species. Though the mammals were skittish, we kept an eye out, especially during a brief night walk we took.
Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
The Nini-Suhien National Park section of the reserve offered its own unique charm, with enchanting waterfalls and natural springs. We took a moment to relax by one of the waterfalls, letting the cool spray refresh us after our hike. It was a perfect spot to reflect on our journey and appreciate the natural beauty that Ghana has to offer.
After our exploration of Ankasa, we made our way back towards Accra, but not without a stop for lunch at Castle Beach Restaurant. Situated near Cape Coast, it provided a lovely view of the ocean. We enjoyed some fresh seafood while reminiscing about our time at Kakum National Park. Nadia loved playing on the beach while Liam and I enjoyed the ocean breeze. It was a perfect way to wind down after our adventurous morning.

As the day drew to a close, we arrived in Accra and decided to have our farewell dinner at The Gold Coast Restaurant & Cocktail Bar. This restaurant, recommended for its authentic Ghanaian cuisine and lively atmosphere, did not disappoint. The decor was a vibrant throwback to the golden age of highlife music, with pictures of Osibisa, Jewel Ackah, and Ebo Taylor adorning the walls. We started with some refreshing cocktails; I tried a local Sobolo drink, while Liam opted for one of their signature cocktails. For dinner, we indulged in a mix of Ghanaian classics, including jollof rice (yes, again!), grilled tilapia, and groundnut soup. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a perfect representation of the culinary delights we've enjoyed throughout our trip.

Before heading back to our hotel, we made a quick stop at Inka Accessories Ghana. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs to remind us of our time here. I found some beautiful beaded jewelry, perfect for gifts and as a personal memento of our journey. Nadia was thrilled with a colorful bracelet, and I purchased a necklace that reminded me of the vibrant colors of the Ghanaian landscape.

As I sit here tonight, writing this final blog post from our hotel room, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. Ghana has touched our hearts in so many ways, from its stunning natural beauty to its warm and welcoming people. We've learned so much about the culture, the history, and the importance of conservation. This trip has not only been an adventure but also an education for our family.
One thing I’ve learned on this trip is the importance of being prepared. I was kicking myself for forgetting the portable solar charger and extra camera batteries. They would have been so useful during our camping trip and while exploring the national parks. Note to self and to all travelers: always double-check your packing list!
Traveling with family, especially with a young child like Nadia, always adds an extra layer of complexity. However, it also brings immeasurable joy and unforgettable memories. Seeing the world through Nadia's eyes, watching her curiosity and wonder unfold, has been the most rewarding part of this trip. I remember when we were at Kakum, and she asked, “Mommy, are we really walking in the sky?” It’s moments like these that make all the planning and effort worthwhile.
I’m also grateful for Liam, who always supports my crazy travel ideas and helps me plan every detail. He is the calm to my storm, and his love for nature and sustainable travel perfectly complements my own passions. Together, we make a great team, and I cherish every moment we spend exploring the world together.
As we prepare to leave tomorrow, I know that a part of us will always remain in Ghana. We'll carry the memories of this trip with us, inspiring us to continue exploring, learning, and connecting with the world around us. And who knows, maybe we'll be back someday to explore more of this beautiful country.
For now, goodbye Ghana, and thank you for the adventure!
Tomorrow marks the end of our trip, and we'll be heading back home to Kingston, Canada, filled with memories and stories to share. It's always bittersweet to leave a place that has captured our hearts, but I know that the experiences and connections we've made here will stay with us forever. We'll be sure to cherish the souvenirs we collected, the photos we took, and the lessons we learned during our family adventure in Ghana.
Before I sign off, I wanted to share a quick tip for anyone planning a trip to Ghana: don't be afraid to try the local cuisine! Ghanaian food is flavorful, diverse, and often spicy. Be adventurous and sample the various dishes, from jollof rice and fufu to kelewele and groundnut soup. You might just discover your new favorite food!
Also, remember to pack appropriately for the weather. Ghana can be hot and humid, especially in the rainforest regions. Lightweight, breathable clothing, insect repellent, and a good pair of hiking boots are essential. And don't forget a raincoat, as the weather can be unpredictable.
Finally, be open to new experiences and embrace the local culture. Ghanaians are known for their warmth and hospitality, so take the time to connect with the people you meet and learn about their traditions. You'll find that the more you immerse yourself in the culture, the more rewarding your trip will be.
Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey. Until next time, happy travels!
