Echoes of the Past, Tastes of Today
Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Marrakech, a city that continues to surprise and enchant me at every turn. From exploring the historic Jewish quarter to indulging in the local flavors, Marrakech is a feast for the senses. I'm eager to share the day’s adventures, which were made even more special by the company of my dear friends.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at BlackChich. While the rooftop view was indeed magnificent, I found the vegan options somewhat limited. Still, the fresh juices were a delightful start to a day promising cultural immersion. I always appreciate a good juice; it reminds me of the simple pleasures in life, much like tending to my garden back in Stuttgart.

Wandering the Mellah
After breakfast, we ventured into the Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter of Marrakech. Founded in 1558, the Mellah was once a thriving commercial hub and a safe haven for the Jewish community. As we walked through the narrow streets, I couldn't help but feel a sense of stepping back in time. The architecture, though faded, hinted at the vibrant communities that once filled these streets. The Mellah's history is a testament to Morocco's diverse cultural heritage, a place where Jewish traditions flourished for centuries.

The Mellah, also known as Hay Essalam, is the second oldest Jewish quarter in Morocco. I read that in 2016, King Mohamed VI ordered the restoration of the Mellah's original street names, a move to preserve the historical memory of the area. It was fascinating to walk along streets like Talmud Torah, imagining the scholars and merchants who once walked these very paths. The stories of the Sephardic Jews who arrived after the expulsion from Spain in 1492, mixing with the local Jewish population, added layers of depth to this historical site.
Stepping through the fortified gates of Morocco's historic “Mellahs” is like entering a world frozen in time.
The Mellah Market was a sensory explosion. The market, located in the southern part of the medina, was bustling with activity. While it's used by people of all backgrounds today, it was once the heart of the Jewish neighborhood. We found a wide variety of fresh produce, meats, and seafood. I even learned that the last kosher butcher in Marrakech is located here. It was a poignant reminder of the community's enduring presence.
Art and History at Dar El Bacha Museum
Next on our itinerary was the Dar El Bacha Museum, also known as the Museum of Confluences. Housed in a beautifully restored palace, this museum celebrates Morocco's rich cultural history and artistic traditions. The palace itself is a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture, with intricate zellige tilework, stucco carvings, and cedarwood lintels. Built in 1910, Dar El Bacha served as the residence of Thami El Glaoui, the Pasha of Marrakech from 1912 to 1956. This museum is a must-see for anyone interested in Moroccan art and culture. As we wandered through the museum's many rooms, I was struck by the intricate details and the fusion of Western and Moroccan design elements. The exhibits rotate, but they all focus on Morocco as a meeting point of cultures and ideas. One of the highlights was the 12th-century Mediterranean map by the Muslim cartographer Al Driss. It was a powerful reminder of Morocco's historical role as a crossroads of civilizations.

The museum also houses a beautifully preserved hammam, complete with subterranean brick chimneys that once heated the chambers. The architecture was stunning, with its colorful geometric tilework and intricate white plasterwork. I could easily see why Thami El Glaoui, known as the Lord of the Atlas, used this palace to impress his visitors, including luminaries like Charlie Chaplin and Winston Churchill.
A Culinary Journey
For lunch, we dined at Stah Marrakech. The restaurant had a fantastic atmosphere, with great music and décor. Stah Marrakech is known for its combination of Moroccan and Mexican cuisine, offering a unique culinary experience. The staff was attentive, and the service was excellent. We shared several tapas dishes, including the briouates and charmoula, and enjoyed refreshing mojitos. It was a delightful midday break.

In the late afternoon, we visited the ZAMAN shop, where I found some beautiful textiles. The shop was filled with unique items, and I picked up a few pieces to add to my collection. Supporting local artisans is something I always try to do, as it connects me more deeply to the culture of the place I am visiting.

As evening approached, we made our way to Le Trou Au Mur Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant's name, which translates to the hole in the wall, was quite fitting, as it was tucked away in a less-than-obvious location. However, once inside, we were transported to a cozy and inviting space. Le Trou Au Mur is known for its modern take on traditional Moroccan cuisine.

The ambiance was warm and welcoming, with lovely paintings adorning the walls. The service was impeccable, and the waiters were knowledgeable about the menu. I opted for the mixed Moroccan salads, followed by the M'rouzia, a slow-cooked beef dish marinated in ras el hanout, saffron, coriander, and honey. The flavors were complex and delicious, a true celebration of Moroccan gastronomy. My friends tried the Berber shepherd's pie and the Meshoui lamb, and we all agreed that the food was exceptional.
To cap off the evening, we headed to BAROMETRE COCKTAILS in Marrakech. The bar had a speakeasy vibe, with a cozy cocktail bar and a separate dining area. The cocktails were creative and well-crafted, and the atmosphere was perfect for a nightcap with friends. I enjoyed a chocolate frappe, while my friends sampled some of the more adventurous cocktails on the menu. The friendly staff and the enjoyable atmosphere made it a memorable end to the day.
