A Breath of Fresh Air in the Atlas Mountains

Today's adventure was a much-needed escape from the bustling city of Marrakech. Sometimes, you need to trade the vibrant souks for the serene landscapes of nature, and that's exactly what my friends and I did. We ventured into the Atlas Mountains, specifically the Ourika Valley, and it was an experience that rejuvenated the soul.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Un déjeuner à Marrakech. The traditional Moroccan pastries and mint tea set the perfect tone for our excursion. Fuelled and excited, we set off towards the Atlas Mountains. I always feel a sense of anticipation when leaving a city behind, especially when the promise of natural beauty lies ahead. It reminds me of my childhood in Kırşehir, where the vast landscapes always held a certain magic. Hans, with his practical German sensibilities, made sure we had everything we needed for the day – water, snacks, and of course, his trusty camera.

The drive to the Ourika Valley was an experience in itself. The landscape transformed dramatically as we ascended into the mountains. The red hues of Marrakech slowly gave way to lush greenery, and the air grew crisper and cleaner. Along the way, we passed through small Berber villages clinging to the hillsides. It was fascinating to see how people lived in such harmony with the rugged terrain. I couldn't help but compare it to the organized efficiency of Stuttgart, a world away from this rustic charm.

Our first major stop was the heart of the Ourika Valley. The valley itself is a stunning tapestry of terraced gardens, fruit orchards, and traditional Berber homes. The Ourika River snaked its way through the valley, providing a constant, soothing soundtrack to our exploration. We decided to take a guided hike to the Setti Fatma waterfalls, a series of seven cascades hidden in the mountains. The hike was moderately challenging, but the views were more than worth the effort. Elif would have loved this, she is always looking for a challenging hike.

As we climbed higher, the air became cooler, and the sound of rushing water grew louder. The path was rocky and uneven, and I was grateful for my comfortable walking shoes. I had almost forgotten my essentials, but remembered them at the last minute. I was able to enjoy the trek without worrying about my feet. The waterfalls themselves were a sight to behold. The water cascaded down the rocks in a series of shimmering curtains, creating a refreshing mist that cooled our faces. We spent some time simply soaking in the beauty of the surroundings, feeling the energy of the mountains.

The beauty of the Atlas Mountains is not just in their majestic peaks, but in the simple, resilient life that thrives within their valleys.

For lunch, we had a rather unique experience at Chez Ali - Fantasia Marrakech. While the food was good, the real highlight was the spectacle. It was a vibrant display of Moroccan horsemanship, music, and dance. It felt a bit touristy, but it was undeniably entertaining. I couldn't help but tap my foot along with the music and admire the skill of the performers. It reminded me of the traditional festivals back in Turkiye, where music and dance are such an integral part of the culture.

After lunch, we explored more of the Ourika Valley, visiting a traditional Berber family. It was an eye-opening experience to see their way of life up close. The family welcomed us with open arms, offering us mint tea and homemade bread. We learned about their customs, their traditions, and their deep connection to the land. It was a humbling reminder of the importance of community and the simple things in life.

As the sun began to set, we started our journey back to Marrakech. The drive was just as beautiful as it had been in the morning, but with a different light. The mountains were bathed in a warm, golden glow, and the sky was ablaze with color. I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude for the day's experiences. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that take you away from the familiar and into the heart of nature.

Back in Marrakech, we decided to indulge in a final culinary experience at Narwama for dinner. The restaurant offered a modern take on traditional Moroccan cuisine, and the ambiance was elegant and sophisticated. It was a lovely way to end our day of exploration.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to The Lotus Club for a nightcap. The atmosphere was lively and the music was infectious. It was a fun way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I even found out that there was a weaving workshop happening today, which I would have loved to attend, but perhaps another time. I also saw that there were concerts happening at Beach Mama Marrakech and Palais Anthea Marrakech, but we were all too tired to attend.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I appreciate these moments of connection – with nature, with culture, and with my friends. It's these experiences that make life so rich and rewarding. As I prepare for tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to Anima (André Heller Garden) and Lalla Takerkoust, I feel refreshed and inspired, ready to embrace whatever adventures lie ahead. Tomorrow we are planning to visit Anima Garden and Lalla Takerkoust, maybe I will find some inspiration for my textile art.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Anima Garden and Lalla Takerkoust. I'm particularly excited about Anima Garden, as I've heard it's a place where art and nature blend seamlessly. Perhaps I'll find some inspiration for my textile art there. We'll also be visiting Lalla Takerkoust, a serene lake surrounded by stunning landscapes. It sounds like the perfect place to relax and recharge before diving back into the vibrant energy of Marrakech. We'll have breakfast at La Mamounia, lunch at Henna Café, and dinner at La Grande Table Marocaine. I am also hoping to check out Haj Mbarek Store and Le Bar Majorelle.

The contrast between the tranquility of the Atlas Mountains and the vibrant energy of Marrakech is something I find truly captivating. It's a reminder that life is all about balance – finding moments of peace amidst the chaos, and embracing the beauty that exists in both the natural world and the human spirit. And with that thought, I bid you goodnight from Marrakech, ready for another day of exploration and discovery. I'm so glad I decided to start this travel blog. It allows me to share my experiences with all of you, and also helps me to reflect on my travels. Goodnight!
