Whispers of the Path

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a serene escape into the heart of Kyoto. It was about embracing the quiet beauty that lies just beyond the bustling city streets, finding solace in nature and history. These are the days that truly rejuvenate the soul, leaving me with a sense of peace that I can carry back home to Stuttgart.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Kakyo. It was a culinary experience that blended Japanese tradition with French innovation. The chef's thoughtful approach to seasonal ingredients was evident in every dish. It was a beautiful start to a day dedicated to tranquility.

First on our itinerary was the famed Philosopher's Path. As we set out, I couldn't help but reflect on the words of Nishida Kitaro, the philosopher for whom the path is named. It's said he would walk this route daily in deep contemplation. Walking the same path, I pondered the simple beauty around me. The path meandered alongside a canal, the water gently flowing, reflecting the sky above. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and the promise of spring. Though the cherry blossoms were still shy, their budding branches hinted at the spectacle to come. According to the latest forecasts, full bloom is expected around early April, but even now, there was a quiet charm to the landscape.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Hans and Elif walked alongside, their presence a comforting anchor as my mind drifted. Elif, ever the keen observer, pointed out the tiny details I might have missed – a moss-covered stone lantern, the intricate patterns in a garden wall. Hans, with his steady presence, reminded me to simply breathe and take it all in. It's these shared moments that make traveling with family so special.

The Philosopher's Path led us to Nanzen-ji, a Zen temple of immense historical significance. As we approached, the imposing Sanmon Gate loomed before us, a testament to the temple's rich past. Built in 1628, this gate is one of the largest of its kind in Japan, its three doorways symbolizing the gateways to enlightenment. Climbing to the second-floor balcony offered a panoramic view of the temple grounds and the surrounding Higashiyama mountains. I could almost imagine Ishikawa Goemon, the notorious Japanese Robin Hood, declaiming in awe at the magnificent view, just as the classic Kabuki scene depicts.

Exploring the temple grounds, we came across the Suirokaku aqueduct, a fascinating blend of Eastern and Western architecture. Built during the Meiji era to transport water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto, this brick structure stands in stark contrast to the traditional wooden buildings of the temple. Yet, it somehow harmonizes with its surroundings, a testament to human ingenuity and the ability to blend the old with the new. I was reminded of the civil engineering marvels back in Stuttgart, and it struck me how every culture finds unique solutions to common problems.

Nanzen-ji's Zen gardens were a highlight, offering a space for quiet contemplation. Though Nanzen-in is currently closed for renovations, the main gardens provided ample opportunity to reflect. The carefully raked gravel, the strategically placed stones, the pruned trees – all elements designed to create a sense of balance and harmony. I found myself drawn to the Hojo, the abbot's quarters, which houses a statue of Bodhisattva Kannon and is believed to have been designed by Kobori Enshu, a renowned garden designer and tea master. I've always felt a connection to gardens; perhaps it's the shared love for nurturing and creating beauty, much like in my textile art.

After a day of walking and contemplation, our stomachs began to rumble. Lunch was at Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store, a restaurant famed for its exquisite tonkatsu. Finding the entrance was a bit of an adventure in itself, tucked away in a narrow alley off the Sanjo Shopping Arcade. But once inside, the aroma of freshly fried pork cutlets filled the air, and we knew we were in for a treat. I appreciated that they fry their cutlets in zero-cholesterol vegetable oil. We each chose a different cut of pork, and they were cooked to perfection. The crispy breading gave way to tender, juicy meat, and the homemade tonkatsu sauce added a depth of flavor that was simply divine. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, the perfect reward after a day of exploration.

As evening approached, we decided to try MUGHAL Indian Restaurant & Bar for dinner. While I appreciate Japanese cuisine, sometimes a craving for the familiar spices of home takes over. Mughal offered a delightful fusion of Indian flavors with Japanese influences. I opted for a seafood curry prepared with squid ink, a unique dish that showcased the owner's passion for Indian cuisine. Hans, ever the traditionalist, chose a classic chicken tikka masala, while Elif experimented with fish tikka marinated in fatty tuna. The warm and welcoming ambiance, coupled with the attentive service, made for a memorable dining experience. It was a pleasant surprise to find such authentic Indian flavors in the heart of Kyoto. It reminded me of the Turkish restaurants in Stuttgart, a little piece of home away from home.

Our day wasn't quite over yet. We ended the evening at Bar K6, a sophisticated bar known for its master bartenders and exquisite cocktails. The cozy decor and the extensive drink list created an inviting atmosphere. I decided to try one of their innovative fruit cocktails, while Hans opted for a classic whiskey. Elif, always eager to try new things, asked the bartender to surprise her. The drinks were expertly crafted, each sip a delightful explosion of flavors. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I felt a sense of contentment, knowing that we had made the most of our time in Kyoto, embracing its beauty and its culture.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Heian Shrine and the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, eager to discover more of Kyoto's hidden treasures. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the vibrant colors of the Heian Shrine and the serene beauty of the botanical gardens. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of today, the gentle whispers of the Philosopher's Path, the imposing presence of Nanzen-ji, and the culinary delights that nourished our bodies and souls.
