Kyoto's Gentle Embrace

Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of Kyoto's imperial past, its serene temples, and a touch of modern design. It was a day for quiet contemplation, a solo journey that allowed me to fully absorb the essence of this captivating city. I embraced the opportunity to explore Kyoto at my own pace, diving deep into the cultural tapestry it so effortlessly weaves.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Hanasaki Nishikiten. Nestled near the vibrant Nishiki Market, this restaurant offered a delightful introduction to Kyoto's culinary scene. The refined flavors and meticulous presentation spoke volumes about the care and dedication poured into each dish. I savored the traditional Japanese breakfast, a symphony of subtle tastes that awakened my senses and prepared me for the day ahead.

With renewed energy, I set off to visit the Shugakuin Imperial Villa. Securing a spot on the guided tour required some advance planning, a testament to its popularity. The villa itself is a sprawling estate, a series of meticulously designed gardens and buildings that showcase the elegance of Japanese landscape architecture. As I strolled through the grounds, I was struck by the harmony between nature and design. The villa, built in the 17th century by Emperor Gomizuno, consists of the Upper, Middle and Lower Villa areas, each featuring gardens and buildings of the traditional imperial style.

The tour, conducted in Japanese, was thankfully supplemented by an audio guide, allowing me to fully appreciate the historical and cultural significance of each element. The manicured gardens, tranquil ponds, and strategically placed tea houses created a sense of serene beauty. I was particularly impressed by the borrowed scenery, the way the villa seamlessly incorporated the surrounding mountains into its design. The tour lasted about one hour and twenty minutes and took me through all three villas, pointing out the significant garden features and structures. Although the interior of the buildings are not accessible, doors and shôji were often left open.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not only in its historical landmarks but also in its ability to inspire quiet reflection and a deep appreciation for the art of living.

Next on my itinerary was Eikandō Temple, a short distance from the Philosopher's Path. This temple, formally known as Zenrin-ji, is known for its autumn scenery. As I wandered through the temple grounds, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. The temple's wooden structures, winding staircases, and lush gardens created a peaceful atmosphere. The Tahōtō Pagoda offered a stunning panoramic view of Kyoto, a breathtaking vista that reminded me of the city's unique blend of urban and natural landscapes.

The walk through the moss-covered stone paths revealed the temple's timeless elegance, especially at the Tahōtō Pagoda. Without the autumn crowds, Eikando felt tranquil and immersive, making it a perfect spot for reflection and quiet exploration. Eikando Temple's fall nighttime illumination is an experience that you don't want to miss. Honestly, the daytime experience is also a must-do during the fall, too.

My exploration of Kyoto's temples continued at Kodaiji Temple. Established in 1606 by Nene, the devoted wife of the legendary warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, this Zen Buddhist temple stands as a magnificent tribute to Japan's rich cultural tapestry and historical grandeur. Located at the foot of the Higashiyama Ryozen Mountains, Kodaiji Temple offers visitors a serene escape into the past. The artistry is wonderful, and the unique style leaves a lasting impression.

The temple's gardens, designed by the notable Japanese artist and aristocrat Enshu Kobori, were a highlight. The carefully raked gravel, artfully arranged stones, and meticulously pruned trees created a miniature landscape of Zen-like perfection. I spent some time meditating by the pond, listening to the gentle sound of the water and feeling the warmth of the afternoon sun on my skin.

After immersing myself in the serene beauty of Kyoto's temples, I decided to indulge my passion for design at the MoMA Design Store Kyoto. As a librarian with a keen interest in art and design, I was eager to see what this outpost of the Museum of Modern Art had to offer. The store was a treasure trove of innovative and aesthetically pleasing objects, from household goods to stationery to art prints. I was particularly drawn to the collection of Japanese design items, which showcased the country's unique blend of tradition and modernity.

I ended up purchasing a few small items, souvenirs that would remind me of my day of exploration and inspiration. The MoMA Design Store is so much more than a museum gift shop. It's an experience. There's so many things you can find only here, whether it be local items or things from across the globe. The stylish white interior of the shop seems like a work of art in itself. In addition to popular MoMA products and limited edition merchandise, the shop is filled with furniture, office supplies, and kitchenware, and many customers come here in search of the perfect gift for someone they know.

For lunch, I ventured to Oryori Menami, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Kyoto cuisine. This restaurant began as a place serving obanzai and yakitori. Kyoto culinary delights line the counter, such as a stew of deep-fried tofu and leafy vegetables, Kujo leek dressed in vinegar miso and boiled nama-yuba. Here you can linger and relax to the gracious hospitality of the tunic-clad proprietress, who keeps her grandmother's name alive in the name of the restaurant.

As evening approached, I made my way to Masayoshi Japanese Dining for dinner. This restaurant is a tiny little hole in the wall with a big reputation. The place is tiny and has the minimalistic, modern and immaculate look that the Japanese are famous for. The evening offers an omakase experience – literally I leave it up to you. The appetizer courses were very fresh tasting – tiny portions of raw fish, vegetables and sauces that were presented as nigiri, soup, a sushi roll and various flavour morsels.

The minimalist setting and attentive service created a refined atmosphere, allowing me to fully appreciate the artistry of the chef's creations. Each course was a revelation, a delicate balance of flavors and textures that showcased the best of Japanese culinary traditions. The fish was incredibly fresh, the vegetables perfectly crisp, and the sauces subtly nuanced. It was a truly memorable dining experience, a fitting end to a day of cultural immersion.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had absorbed, how deeply I had connected with Kyoto's unique spirit. From the imperial elegance of Shugakuin Villa to the serene beauty of Eikando and Kodaiji Temples, to the modern design of MoMA Design Store and the culinary artistry of Oryori Menami and Masayoshi Japanese Dining, Kyoto had offered me a multifaceted experience that nourished both my mind and my soul.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Shimogamo Shrine and Tadasu-no-Mori Forest, followed by an evening at Kamishichiken Kabukai. I might even stop by Concrete Bar for a nightcap. I'm excited to see what new discoveries await me in this enchanting city.

As I return to my hotel, Matsui Honkan, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's beauty and culture. This solo journey has been a gift, a chance to reconnect with myself and to discover new facets of this remarkable city. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. Good night from Kyoto!
