A Solo Cultural Exploration in Fes, Morocco
Day 3: A Day of Discovery: Unveiling Fes's Hidden Gems and Ancient Echoes
Explore Fes's cultural heart: Al Attarine Madrasa's artistry, Dar Batha Museum's heritage, and a Volubilis tour revealing Roman history.
Echoes of the Past in the Heart of Fes
Today was a journey through time, a day where the whispers of Fes's rich history echoed in every corner I explored. From the intricate artistry of a religious school to the vast landscapes of ancient Roman ruins, it was a day of contrasts, a day of deep immersion into the soul of Morocco.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at La Maison Bleue. The ambiance was enchanting, with traditional Moroccan décor and the promise of a culinary journey. I savored every bite, knowing that the day ahead would be filled with exploration and discovery. The hotel itself is a treasure, and I made a mental note to perhaps stay there next time, to fully immerse myself in its luxurious Moroccan traditions.
With a full stomach and a heart eager for adventure, I set out to explore the Al Attarine Madrasa. The madrasa, a testament to the Marinid dynasty's architectural prowess, was a sight to behold. Every inch of the courtyard was adorned with intricate Islamic designs, a dazzling display of artistry that left me in awe. I wandered through the halls, imagining the students who once walked these corridors, their voices now silent, their stories etched into the very walls. The play of light and shadow, the cool air within the madrasa's walls, it was all a sensory experience that transported me back in time.

The beauty of Fes lies not just in its monuments, but in the stories whispered by its ancient stones.
Next on my itinerary was the Dar Batha Museum, a treasure trove of Moroccan arts and crafts. Housed in a 19th-century palace, the museum offered a glimpse into the artistic heritage of Fes and Morocco. From traditional pottery to intricate woodwork, each exhibit showcased the diverse influences of Arab, Berber, and Andalusian cultures. The Andalusian Garden, a peaceful courtyard filled with orange trees and fragrant flowers, provided a serene escape from the bustling city. I paused there for a moment, soaking in the tranquility, before delving back into the museum's rich collection.

After immersing myself in the cultural heart of Fes, I embarked on a Fes-Volubilis tour, eager to explore the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis. The drive to Volubilis was scenic, with rolling hills and olive groves stretching as far as the eye could see. As we approached the site, the ruins emerged from the landscape, remnants of a once-thriving Roman city. I wandered through the ruins, imagining the lives of the people who once called this place home. The mosaics, still intact after centuries, were a testament to the artistry of the Roman Empire. It was surreal to stand there, surrounded by history, feeling a connection to a civilization that existed so long ago.

The tour also included a stop at Moulay Idriss, one of Morocco's holiest cities. The narrow streets and compact town exuded a sense of spirituality, a place where the echoes of Morocco's first Islamic ruler still resonate. Though the time there was brief, the visit left a lasting impression, a reminder of the deep-rooted faith that permeates Moroccan culture.
The final stop on the tour was Meknes, one of Morocco's four imperial cities. Founded in the 11th century, Meknes boasts a rich history and impressive architecture. I admired the monumental gates of the medina, taking in the Moorish decorative features that adorn the city. A walk along the city walls provided panoramic views of Meknes, a city that has witnessed centuries of change and transformation. While Volubilis was the highlight for me, Meknes offered a glimpse into Morocco's imperial past, a reminder of the country's complex and fascinating history.
Upon returning to Fes, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Fes Antiques. The shop, a treasure trove of culture and history, was filled with antiques, art pieces, and collectibles that reflected the city's vibrant heritage. I strolled through the carefully arranged displays, admiring the unique antique furniture, stunning lighting fixtures, and handcrafted items. I even considered purchasing a small antique mirror as a souvenir, a piece of Fes to bring back home to Bamberg. The shop assistant told me about Coin Berbere, another store with carpets and antiques, apparently mentioned in the New York Times. I might check it out tomorrow.

For dinner, I ventured to Dar Roumana, a restaurant recommended for its refined Franco-Moroccan cuisine. The ambiance was romantic, the service impeccable, and the food exquisite. I savored every bite, reflecting on the day's adventures. The blend of Moroccan and French flavors was a culinary delight, a perfect ending to a day of cultural immersion.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Andalusian Mosque, the Borj Nord Museum, and Place Rcif. I also intend to relax with a drink at the Zen Garden bar, a perfect way to unwind after another day of exploration. I am excited to see what new discoveries await me in this captivating city.
As I sit here, writing this blog post, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Fes is a city that captivates the senses, a place where history comes alive, and culture permeates every aspect of life. It is a city that has touched my soul, a place that I will never forget. I'm so glad I decided to embark on this solo journey, even though Hans is probably missing me a lot. I promised him I would bring some spices and a small carpet. I am sure he will be delighted to hear all about my adventures when I return to Bamberg.
I am also starting to get used to traveling alone. It's empowering in a way, to be fully responsible for my itinerary, my safety, and my overall experience. It's a stark contrast to my life back in Bamberg, where I mostly work from home as a translator. This trip is a wonderful escape, a chance to reconnect with my passion for travel and cultural exchange.
And I must admit, I did forget to pack sunscreen and a hat! The Moroccan sun is quite strong, even in May. I will definitely need to purchase those items tomorrow. It's a small oversight, but a necessary one to ensure I can continue to enjoy my time here without getting sunburned.
Before I turn in for the night, I want to encourage you, dear readers, to step outside your comfort zone and explore the world. Travel is not just about seeing new places, it's about expanding your horizons, connecting with different cultures, and discovering new aspects of yourself. Fes has certainly taught me that, and I am excited to see what other lessons this journey has in store for me.
Goodnight from Fes!
