Day 8: Farewell, Fes: A Final Day of Discoveries and Delicious Farewells
Reflecting on my final day in Fes, exploring historic gates, savoring local flavors, and soaking in the city's vibrant atmosphere.
A Fond Farewell to Fes
As my eight-day solo adventure in Fes draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. While I am eager to return to Bamberg and share my stories with Hans, leaving this captivating city feels like saying goodbye to an old friend. Today was all about soaking in those final moments, revisiting favorite spots, and discovering a few hidden gems I had somehow missed.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at La Breva. This charming café, recommended by a local friend, offered a stunning panoramic view of the city. Sipping on traditional Moroccan mint tea while enjoying a selection of pastries, I watched as Fes slowly awakened, the sounds of the city gradually filling the morning air. The rooftop setting was perfect for reflection, allowing me to mentally revisit the highlights of my journey. I made a mental note to try and recreate the oats harcha I had for breakfast when I got back home to Germany. It was delicious!

With a full stomach and a heart full of memories, I set out to explore the historic gates of Fes, starting with the iconic Bab Boujloud. The vibrant blue tiles of the gate shimmered in the morning sun, creating a mesmerizing sight. As I passed through the gate, I was immediately immersed in the bustling atmosphere of the medina, a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells. I paused to admire the intricate details of the gate, a masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship that serves as a gateway to the heart of Fes.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives and embracing the unknown.
Next on my list was the El Glaoui Palace, a hidden gem tucked away in the Ziat district. This palace, once owned by the powerful Glaoui family, offered a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Moroccan aristocracy in the early 20th century. Although the palace has seen better days, its grandeur is still palpable, with intricate stucco work, vibrant zellij tiles, and sprawling courtyards hinting at its former glory. I wandered through the palace's labyrinthine corridors, imagining the lavish parties and important gatherings that once took place within its walls. It was fascinating to learn that this palace was the first building in Morocco to have electricity and heating! The Glaoui family certainly knew how to live in style.

My exploration of Fes's historic gates continued with a visit to Bab Mahrouk, located on the northwestern corner of Place Bou Jeloud. This gate, dating back to 1204, has a rich and often gruesome history. Originally known as Bab ash-Shari'a, meaning Gate of Justice, it was later renamed Bab Mahrouk, meaning Gate of the Burnt, after a rebel's body was burned here in the 13th century. Throughout history, the gate served as a site for displaying the heads of executed rebels, a stark reminder of the city's turbulent past. Today, Bab Mahrouk stands as a testament to Fes's enduring spirit, a symbol of resilience and perseverance.

For lunch, I ventured to Made in M, a restaurant recommended for its modern take on traditional Moroccan cuisine. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff immediately made me feel at home. I savored a delicious tagine, a slow-cooked stew of meat and vegetables, infused with aromatic spices and herbs. The flavors were complex and satisfying, a perfect representation of Moroccan culinary artistry.

As the day wore on, I decided to indulge in one last Moroccan experience: a visit to a traditional hammam. After a bit of research, I selected a local hammam known for its authentic atmosphere and skilled practitioners. The experience was both invigorating and relaxing, as I was scrubbed, massaged, and steamed in the traditional Moroccan style. I emerged from the hammam feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, my skin glowing and my mind at peace.
With the sun beginning to set, I made my way to the blue wall for a final taste of Fassi nightlife. The bar was buzzing with activity, locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories over drinks. I ordered a Moroccan Flag beer, brewed right here in Fes, and raised a toast to my incredible journey. As I sipped my beer, I reflected on the experiences I had had, the people I had met, and the lessons I had learned. Fes had exceeded all my expectations, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and hospitality that I would never forget.

For my final dinner in Fes, I chose La Maison Bleue, a restaurant renowned for its exquisite Moroccan cuisine and elegant atmosphere. The restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored riad, with intricate mosaics, carved stucco, and lush gardens creating a magical setting. I opted for the tasting menu, a culinary journey through the flavors of Morocco. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable, making me feel like a pampered guest. The live traditional music added to the ambiance, creating a truly unforgettable dining experience. The tagine was exceptional, and the dessert, a flaky pastry with layers of cream and orange blossom, was the perfect ending to my culinary adventure.

As I prepare to leave Fes tomorrow, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to have experienced this amazing city. From the bustling medina to the serene mosques, from the fragrant spices to the warm hospitality, Fes has captured my heart and soul. I know that I will carry the memories of this journey with me always, and I hope to return someday to explore even more of its hidden treasures. I know Hans would love it here.
Until next time, Fes, goodbye, and shukran!
I am off to the airport in the morning, and then back to Bamberg. It will be good to see Hans again, and to share my adventures with him. But a part of me will always remain in Fes, wandering through its ancient streets and soaking in its vibrant culture.
