Whispers of Royalty and Ancient Echoes

Today in Fes was a journey through time and tradition. From the majestic gates of the Royal Palace to the serene walls of an ancient synagogue and the bustling energy of the Henna Souk, every corner of this city revealed a new layer of its rich history. It was a day of contrasts, where the grandeur of royalty met the simplicity of everyday life, and where the echoes of the past resonated with the vibrant present.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Clock. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, a delightful assortment of breads, cheeses, and olives, accompanied by a steaming glass of mint tea. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. I remember Hans once tried to replicate Moroccan mint tea back in Bamberg, but it never quite tasted the same. Perhaps it's the Moroccan mint, or maybe it's the atmosphere, but nothing beats enjoying it here.

First on my itinerary was the Royal Palace of Fez, or Dar al-Makhzen. Though non-Muslims aren't allowed inside, the exterior alone was worth the visit. The massive bronze doors, intricately decorated and gleaming in the morning sun, were a sight to behold. The palace dates back to the 13th century, serving as a royal residence and a symbol of Moroccan power. I learned that it spans 80 hectares and is still used by the King of Morocco when he's in Fes. The detailed craftsmanship and the sheer scale of the palace were truly impressive, a testament to the city's rich history and enduring royal traditions. I took several photos, trying to capture the grandeur, but no image could truly do it justice. It's a place you have to see with your own eyes.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Next, I ventured into the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, in search of the Aben Danan Synagogue. Finding it was an adventure in itself, tucked away behind an unassuming door in a narrow alley. This 17th-century synagogue is a hidden gem, a testament to the Jewish community that once thrived in Fes. I learned that it was built by Mimoun Ben Sidan, a wealthy merchant, and has been restored several times over the centuries. Stepping inside was like stepping back in time. The interior was simple yet elegant, with blue-figured Moroccan tiles, a wooden ceiling, and a beautifully carved Torah Ark. The serene atmosphere was conducive to quiet reflection, and I spent some time contemplating the history and the stories held within those walls. It was a poignant reminder of the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Fes.

Leaving the synagogue, I made my way to the Henna Souk, a vibrant marketplace filled with color and life. Located just off the Al-Attarine Souk, it's one of the oldest and most picturesque squares in the medina. The souk is centered around two massive, gnarled plane trees, providing shade for the stalls selling pottery, spices, and traditional cosmetics, including, of course, henna. The air was filled with the aroma of spices and the chatter of vendors and shoppers. I watched as women had intricate henna designs applied to their hands and feet, a beautiful tradition that has been passed down through generations. I couldn't resist buying a small ceramic tagine, hand-painted with traditional Fassi designs, as a souvenir for my kitchen back in Bamberg. I also picked up some saffron, hoping to recreate some of the delicious Moroccan dishes I've been enjoying.

For lunch, I decided to try Restaurant Darna Fes, drawn in by its promise of panoramic views and traditional Moroccan cuisine. It certainly lived up to its reputation. The restaurant offered a breathtaking vista of the ancient city. I savored a tagine with chicken and preserved lemons, a classic Moroccan dish that was bursting with flavor. The ambiance was relaxed and welcoming, and I enjoyed chatting with some fellow travelers about their experiences in Fes.

After lunch, I couldn't resist the urge to explore the Cooperative Artisanal de Fes. I wanted to find a special piece that reflected the artistry of Fes. The cooperative showcased a stunning array of handcrafted treasures. I was captivated by the intricate details and vibrant colors of the ceramics, textiles, and woodwork on display. It was inspiring to see the artisans' dedication to preserving traditional techniques. I finally settled on a beautifully crafted wooden box, inlaid with mother-of-pearl, perfect for storing jewelry or small mementos.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Palais Amani for dinner at Eden. This was a special treat I had been looking forward to all day. The restaurant is set in a stunning courtyard garden, with lanterns casting a warm glow over the scene. The menu featured modern takes on traditional Moroccan dishes, and I opted for the chef's tasting menu, a culinary journey through the flavors of Morocco. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and incredibly delicious. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was magical. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Marinid Tombs for a panoramic view of the city, explore Fes El Jdid, and discover the Saffarin Madrasa. I might even venture out to Bar Café Dalila for a relaxing evening drink. For now, I'll rest and dream of the wonders I've seen today.

Fes continues to surprise and enchant me. It's a city where the past and present intertwine, where tradition and modernity coexist, and where every corner holds a new story waiting to be discovered. I am so glad I came here on this solo journey, and I am so looking forward to what tomorrow brings.
