A Day Among the Echoes of Fes

Today was a journey through time, a day where the ancient stones of Fes whispered stories of dynasties and scholars. I wandered through historical sites, each corner revealing a new layer of Morocco’s rich past. From panoramic views to intricate architecture, the city unfolded before me in all its glory.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Nagham Cafe. The cafe’s cozy atmosphere and delicious Moroccan coffee were the perfect start to a day of exploration. As I sipped my coffee, I planned my route, eager to immerse myself in the history and culture of Fes. I made sure to apply some of the sunscreen I had forgotten to pack, a lesson learned from the previous days under the Moroccan sun.

First on the agenda was the Marinid Tombs. Perched on a hill overlooking Fes el Bali, these ruined tombs offer a panoramic view of the city. The climb was a bit strenuous, but the vista was more than worth it. The golden light bathed the sprawling cityscape, casting long shadows that danced across the ancient walls. It was easy to imagine the Marinid sultans looking out over their capital, a testament to their power and legacy.

In contrast to the labyrinthine alleys of Fes el Bali, Fes El Jdid boasts wider streets and a more orderly layout. This part of the city was established by the Marinid dynasty as their royal citadel and administrative center. I strolled along the Grande Rue, the main thoroughfare, admiring the blend of Moroccan and Andalusian architectural styles.

One of the highlights of Fes El Jdid is the Royal Palace, Dar al-Makhzen. Although only the gates are visible to the public, they are a sight to behold. Nearby, I explored the Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter, with its unique architecture and rich cultural heritage. The mellah was a stark reminder of the diverse communities that have shaped Fes over the centuries.

In the afternoon, I made my way to the Saffarin Madrasa, one of the oldest and most important theological schools in Fes. Built in 1271, it is a stunning example of Marinid architecture. The madrasa is located on Saffarin Square, a bustling area known for its coppersmiths. The rhythmic hammering of metal provided a constant soundtrack to my visit.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to unwind at Bar Café Dalila. This cozy bar offered a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for reflecting on the day's adventures. I ordered a local beer and watched as the city came alive with the sounds of evening. The bar was a mix of locals and tourists, all enjoying the convivial atmosphere.

It reminded me a bit of Guanare, with its vibrant street life and warm, welcoming people, though Guanare is obviously smaller and less ancient.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Mosque and University Kairaouine, Palais Mnebhi and the Viewpoint Medina, continuing my exploration of this fascinating city. I also intend to visit Art fez to pick up some souvenirs. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery, eager to uncover more of Fes's hidden treasures.
