Echoes of the Past: A Day of Reflection

Today was a profound experience, a deep dive into the spiritual heart of the Kumano Kodo. It's amazing how walking these ancient paths can transport you, making you feel connected to centuries of pilgrims who have sought solace and enlightenment here. Leaving the tech-heavy world of Berlin behind, I find myself drawn to the simple beauty and profound history of this place. It's a welcome change, a chance to reconnect with myself and the world around me.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Fushiogami Teahouse. This charming spot, nestled along the Kumano Kodo, offered a serene start to the day. The traditional Japanese tea and light snacks were the perfect fuel for the day's adventures. Sipping tea while overlooking the lush greenery, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a perfect way to prepare for the spiritual journey ahead.

From there, I set out to explore the Kumano Hongu Taisha, one of the three grand shrines of Kumano. The main hall, with its austere beauty, was awe-inspiring. Learning about the history of the shrine, how it was moved after a devastating flood, added another layer of depth to the experience. I took my time wandering through the grounds, reading the informational plaques, and soaking in the atmosphere. The air was thick with the scent of incense, and the gentle rustling of leaves created a soothing soundtrack. I felt a sense of reverence and respect for this sacred place.

Next on the itinerary was Oyunohara, the original location of the Kumano Hongu Taisha. This expansive site, now marked by Japan's largest torii gate, was once the heart of Kumano pilgrimage. Standing beneath the massive gate, I tried to imagine the shrine in its former glory, the countless pilgrims who had passed through its gates, and the rituals that had taken place on this sacred ground. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the enduring power of faith and tradition.

Walking through Oyunohara, I couldn't help but reflect on my own journey. As a freelance software developer based in Berlin, my life is often consumed by lines of code and the constant hum of technology. This trip to Kumano Kodo is a deliberate escape from that world, a chance to disconnect from the digital and reconnect with the physical, the spiritual, and the historical. It’s funny, I almost forgot to pack sunscreen before leaving Berlin, too caught up in last-minute work. Luckily, I remembered my trusty travel journal and camera, essential tools for capturing these moments of reflection and discovery.

For lunch, I stopped at Kumano Kodo Omotenashi-Kan, a charming visitor center housed in a beautifully renovated traditional building. This place offered local specialties and takeaway snacks. I decided to try the local delicacy, Mehari-zushi, which is a type of rice ball wrapped in pickled mustard leaves. The taste was unique and flavorful, a perfect representation of the local cuisine. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, providing me with valuable insights into the history and culture of the area.

As the day wound down, I found myself at Why Kumano, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. I enjoyed a refreshing drink while chatting with some of the locals, learning more about their lives and traditions. It was a great way to unwind after a day of hiking and exploring, a chance to connect with the community and experience the local culture firsthand.

Before heading to the bar, I had dinner at Hinoki Steak House. After a long day of walking, I was ravenous, and the hearty meal was just what I needed. The steak was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, and the sides were equally delicious. The chef was incredibly friendly and professional, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. It's amazing how a good meal can lift your spirits and rejuvenate your body after a tiring day.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Kumano Hayatama Taisha and Tokei Shrine. I'm looking forward to exploring more of this fascinating region, delving deeper into its history and culture, and continuing my own personal journey of self-discovery. I'm particularly excited about visiting Daimonzaka Chaya, a shop that seems to offer a glimpse into the past.

Even though I am traveling solo, I never feel alone. There is something about this place that fosters a sense of connection, both to the past and to the people around me. Maybe it’s the shared experience of walking the same paths as countless pilgrims before me, or maybe it’s the genuine warmth and hospitality of the local people. Whatever it is, I am grateful for this opportunity to explore the Kumano Kodo, to learn, to reflect, and to grow. This journey is more than just a vacation; it's a pilgrimage of the soul.
