Delphi's Hidden Gems & Culinary Delights

Today was a delightful blend of natural beauty, historical exploration, and culinary indulgence. Aoife and I set out to discover some of Delphi's lesser-known treasures, and the day certainly didn't disappoint. It's amazing how much history and culture is packed into this region, offering something new at every turn.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at L'Aurige Restaurant. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Greek coffee filled the air as we settled into our table. I opted for some eggs with a side of local cheese, while Aoife chose a lighter option of yogurt with honey and nuts. The food was delicious, but the view was even better. From our vantage point, we could see the rolling hills and olive groves that define the Delphi landscape. It was the perfect way to start our day of exploration. I can see why others have enjoyed the views and the atmosphere here.

After breakfast, we made our way to Krya Park in Livadia. The drive itself was quite scenic, offering glimpses of the Greek countryside. Krya Park is a serene oasis, a welcome escape from the ancient ruins that dominate the region. The park is known for its natural springs and lush greenery, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll. We wandered along the paved paths, admiring the age-old plane trees and the small waterfalls that dotted the landscape. I even spotted a bust of the nymph Erkyna, which added a touch of mythology to the experience.

The park was teeming with locals enjoying the pleasant weather. Families were picnicking on the grassy areas, and children were laughing and playing in the playground. Aoife and I found a quiet bench by the river and simply sat there, soaking in the tranquility of the surroundings. It was a far cry from the bustling tourist spots we had visited earlier in the week, and it was a welcome change of pace. I must admit, the peace and quiet was a refreshing change, allowing Aoife and I to reconnect with each other amidst the natural beauty.

Sometimes, the greatest discoveries are not in ancient ruins, but in the quiet corners of the present moment.

Next on our itinerary was the Sikyonian Treasury in Delphi. This ancient structure has a complicated history, replacing two former buildings, the 'Tholos' and the 'Monopteros'. The treasury was built by the city of Sicyon, known for its innovative sculpturing and limestone quarries. As an antiques dealer, I was particularly interested in the architectural details and the stories behind the stones. Aoife, with her librarian's eye, was fascinated by the historical context and the political significance of the treasury.

The Sikyonian Treasury was erected to honor the gods and showcase the wealth and political power of Sicyon. The treasury replaced older structures linked to Cleisthenes of Sicyon, marking a shift in Sicyonian politics. The building itself is Doric in style and was visible from the entrance of the Sanctuary of Apollo. The metopes depict myths of significance to Sicyon, such as the stories of the Dioscuri twins, the Boar of Kalydon, the Abduction of Europa by Zeus, and Jason's Argo.

Standing there, surrounded by the remnants of this ancient structure, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The Sikyonian Treasury is a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of the ancient Greeks, a reminder of their rich cultural heritage. It's amazing to think that these stones have stood here for centuries, witnessing the rise and fall of civilizations. Exploring sites like this always ignites my passion for history, reminding me of the importance of preserving these treasures for future generations.

After immersing ourselves in history, it was time for a late lunch. We drove to Itea, a charming coastal town near Delphi, and found ourselves at Zephyros Sea food restaurant. The restaurant had a lovely view of the sea, and the menu was filled with tempting seafood dishes. We decided to share a platter of grilled fish, accompanied by a fresh Greek salad and some local wine. The fish was cooked to perfection, and the flavors were simply divine. Aoife particularly enjoyed the calamari, while I savored the grilled octopus. It was a truly memorable meal, a perfect blend of fresh ingredients and traditional Greek flavors.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Delphi and decided to have dinner at Restaurant Scala. This place came highly recommended, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff was friendly and attentive. I opted for the lamb chops, while Aoife chose the moussaka. Both dishes were cooked with care and bursting with flavor. We lingered over our meal, savoring each bite and enjoying the ambiance of the restaurant. It was a wonderful way to end our day of exploration and discovery.

Before heading back to the Hermes Delphi Hotel, we decided to stop by Il mondo Cafe Bar for a nightcap. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with music playing and people chatting and laughing. We ordered a couple of glasses of local wine and sat outside, enjoying the cool evening air. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. We chatted about our favorite moments from the day, reminiscing about the beauty of Krya Park and the historical significance of the Sikyonian Treasury. It was a fitting end to a day filled with exploration, discovery, and culinary delights.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Delphi continues to surprise and delight us, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and culinary indulgence. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Vouraikos and The Peak of Love, and Aoife is already excited about the prospect of finding some unique souvenirs at Meandros Souvenir Shop. I'm looking forward to discovering more hidden gems and creating lasting memories in this enchanting corner of Greece. I'm also excited to try Iniohos Taverna for breakfast, Taverna Gargadoyas for lunch and Ladokolla arachova for dinner. I have a feeling that the best is yet to come.

The blend of history, nature, and food has been an absolute treat, and I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.
