Echoes of Antiquity: A Day Among Mountains and Caves

Today was a day of venturing into the heart of Greece, a day where history and nature intertwined to create an unforgettable experience. Aoife and I set out with a sense of excitement, eager to explore the rugged landscapes and hidden wonders that Delphi had to offer. It's moments like these that remind me why I traded the familiar comforts of Montpelier for a life filled with exploration and discovery.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kaplanis Taverna. It was a charming spot , and the perfect way to fuel up for our adventures ahead. I enjoyed some local delicacies, while Aoife savored the strong Greek coffee, a ritual she's grown quite fond of since we arrived. It’s these simple pleasures, shared over a table, that make traveling with my wife so special. The taverna provided a cozy start to a day filled with exploration.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to explore Mount Parnassus. The mountain loomed majestically, its rocky slopes hinting at the stories it held within. As an antiques dealer, I've always been fascinated by the past, and Parnassus felt like stepping back in time. According to Greek mythology, Parnassus was sacred to Dionysus, Apollo, and the Corycian nymphs, and home to the Muses. Parnassus is one of the largest mountainous regions in Greece. It's a vast and imposing landscape, and its peaks are believed to be sacred to Dionysus and Apollo. The mountain offers scenic views of the countryside.

We didn't attempt to scale the highest peak, but instead, we followed one of the many trails that wind through its lower reaches. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and earth. As we walked, I couldn't help but imagine the ancient Greeks who once traversed these paths, seeking inspiration and guidance from the gods. The mountain is rich in bauxite. The landscape was dotted with olive groves, their silvery leaves shimmering in the sunlight.

To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.

Our next stop was the Stalactite Cave Levavot. Tucked away in the hills, this hidden gem promised a glimpse into the geological wonders of Greece. The walk to the cave was mainly uphill. As we descended into the cave, a cool, damp air enveloped us. The silence was broken only by the gentle dripping of water, a testament to the slow, patient work of nature. Inside, the cave was a mesmerizing display of stalactites and stalagmites, formed over millennia. The crystal-like structures hung from the ceiling and rose from the ground, creating an otherworldly ambiance.

Aoife, ever the librarian, was particularly fascinated by the cave's history and formation. She peppered me with questions about the geological processes at play, and I did my best to offer explanations, drawing on my limited knowledge and a healthy dose of imagination. We spent a good hour exploring the cave, marveling at the intricate formations and imagining the creatures that might have once sought shelter within its depths.

Stepping back into the sunlight, we felt refreshed and invigorated by our subterranean adventure. It was time for lunch, and we made our way to Maistrali Restaurant in Itea. Nestled along the coast, this restaurant offered stunning views of the azure sea. The menu featured a variety of fresh seafood dishes, expertly prepared using traditional Greek recipes. We shared a plate of grilled octopus and some succulent shrimp saganaki, savoring the flavors of the Mediterranean.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. KOUROS, a local shop in Delphi, caught my eye with its display of handcrafted jewelry. As an antiques dealer, I appreciate fine craftsmanship, and the pieces in this shop were truly exquisite. Aoife found a beautiful silver necklace, its design inspired by ancient Greek motifs. It was the perfect memento of our trip, a tangible reminder of the beauty and history we had encountered. I was tempted by a leather wallet, but resisted, knowing I had enough vintage maps and antique trinkets cluttering my shop back in Dublin.

Our final stop of the day was To Tsoukali for dinner. This charming restaurant in Arachova came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The owner, Giannis, greeted us with warmth and enthusiasm, sharing stories about his family's recipes and the local ingredients he uses. The food was exceptional, a true celebration of Greek cuisine. We savored every bite, from the flavorful fava to the tender rabbit with mustard sauce. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, making us feel like we were dining in a friend's home.

As we walked back to the Hermes Delphi Hotel under the starlit sky, Aoife and I reflected on the day's adventures. We had explored ancient trails, delved into a mesmerizing cave, and savored the flavors of Greece. It was a day that had touched all our senses, a day that had deepened our appreciation for the history and beauty of this remarkable country.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Krya Park and the Sikyonian Treasury. I'm particularly looking forward to Krya Park, as a bit of nature will be a welcome contrast to the historical sites we've been exploring. And perhaps we'll stop by Il mondo Cafe Bar for a nightcap.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to try and find a travel adaptor when we get back to Dublin. It’s been a constant struggle keeping all our devices charged, and I’m kicking myself for forgetting to pack one. Also, binoculars would have been useful today, especially on Parnassus. You live and learn, I suppose.

Tonight, as I close my eyes, I carry with me the echoes of antiquity, the whispers of the wind through the olive groves, and the gentle rhythm of dripping water in the Stalactite Cave Levavot. These are the moments that make travel so enriching, the moments that stay with you long after you've returned home.
