Exploring Ancient Delphi: A Journey Through History
Day 8: Delphi's Hidden Gems: Unearthing History and Culture
Exploring Delphi's Treasury of the Massaliots and the Museum of Delphic Festivals, a day of historical immersion and cultural enrichment.
A Day of Discovery in Ancient Delphi
Today, Aoife and I dove deeper into the heart of Delphi, seeking to understand not just the grand narratives of ancient Greece, but also the smaller, more personal stories woven into its stones. It’s these details, often overlooked, that truly bring history to life, making it more than just dates and names in a book.
Our day began, as many do here in Delphi, with a hearty breakfast at the Miami Lounge Bar. Despite its name evoking images of sun-soaked beaches and Art Deco architecture, this Miami Lounge Bar is in Itea, near Delphi, and offered a delightful start to the day. Fuelled up with coffee and pastries, we set off to explore the day's itinerary, eager to uncover more of Delphi's secrets.

The first stop was the Treasury of the Massaliots. This small, temple-like structure, built around 510 BC by the residents of Massalia (modern-day Marseille), stands as a testament to their wealth and influence in the ancient world. As an antiques dealer, I was particularly drawn to the intricate details of the remaining friezes, imagining the vibrant scenes of battles and mythological stories that once adorned its walls. Aoife, with her librarian's eye for detail, was fascinated by the architectural style, noting the unique Aeolian capitals that predate the Corinthian style. It's remarkable to think that this treasury, built by a city so far away, played a role in the bustling life of the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. The treasury was constructed of Parian marble and featured sculpted decoration consisting of a chariot dragged by four horses. The sima was decorated with lion heads, whereas it was flanked by Nike-form acroteria. The Ionian frieze spread along its three sides, at least, and comprised more than 140 figures in battle scenes. An Amazonomachy and a Centauromachy have been securely identified.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.
After soaking in the atmosphere of the Treasury, we made our way to the Museum of Delphic Festivals. This museum, housed in the former home of Angelos and Eva Sikelianos, is dedicated to their efforts to revive the ancient Delphic Festivals in the 1920s and 1930s. Angelos Sikelianos and his wife Eva Palmer managed to organize the Delphic Festivals twice, in 1927 and 1930. The museum displays items connected to these two festivals, including rich photographic material, theatre costumes that Eva herself designed, several manuscripts of the poet, personal objects and the famous loom of Eva. The Delphic festivals were organized for the first time in 1927, at the initiative of Angelos Sikelianos and his American wife Eva Palmer-Sikelianou, making the vision of the Delphic Idea a reality and reminding everyone that Delphi is the Navel of the Earth.

As we wandered through the exhibits, we were struck by the passion and vision of this couple, who sought to bring together ancient theatrical traditions, Byzantine music, and folk art in a celebration of Greek culture. Eva’s hand-woven costumes, displayed alongside photographs of the performances, spoke volumes about their dedication and artistic flair. It was a poignant reminder of how individuals can leave a lasting impact on the cultural landscape, even when faced with financial hardship and lack of support. It also made me think of the importance of Aoife's work as a librarian, preserving and sharing knowledge for future generations. The exhibitions of the museum include photographic and printed material from the Delphic Festivals, costumes from the performances of ancient drama, the famous broadloom of Eva Sikelianou, handwritten texts from the poet and other items.
For lunch, we decided to try Kalýba, a local restaurant known for its traditional Greek cuisine. It was a delightful experience, savoring the flavors of the region while watching locals go about their day. We shared a plate of grilled lamb chops and a fresh Greek salad, the simple ingredients bursting with flavor. It’s these moments of culinary discovery that add an extra layer of richness to our travels.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we found ourselves at Melopoleio, a charming café that transforms into a wine bar in the evenings. We sat outside, sipping local wine and watching the sky ablaze with color. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation, a perfect ending to a day filled with history and culture. Melopoleio morphs into an afternoon sandwich and ice-cream stop, then into an evening wine bar with signature cocktails. It’s a go-to place for oven-baked savory pies, fresh juices and espresso drinks, plus teas from local herbs.

Unfortunately, our planned dinner at Delphinios Lounge didn't pan out, as it appears to be closed. Nevertheless, we found a cozy taverna nearby and enjoyed a delicious meal of moussaka and souvlaki. It was a reminder that sometimes the best experiences are the unplanned ones, the little detours that lead to unexpected discoveries.

As I reflect on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible place with Aoife. Each day brings new insights, new connections to the past, and a deeper appreciation for the richness of human history. It's these shared experiences that strengthen our bond and create lasting memories.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Parnassus and the Stalactite Cave Levavot. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery, and I can’t wait to share it with you all. Before that, we will have breakfast at Kaplanis Taverna, lunch at Maistrali Restaurant, and dinner at To Tsoukali. I am also looking forward to visiting KOUROS shop. Good night from Delphi!
