Parks, Pubs, and Palates: A Day in Elmina
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the tranquility of parks with the lively buzz of local life. Elmina continued to surprise me with its hidden gems, and I'm excited to share the experiences with you. From historical parks to savory chop bars and a relaxing evening at a local pub, it was a day that truly immersed us in the Ghanaian spirit.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the One Africa Health Resort. The resort had a welcoming atmosphere, and the breakfast was a delightful mix of local and international flavors. After a satisfying meal, we set out to explore Kwame Nkrumah Hall Park.
Experience the serenity of Kwame Nkrumah Hall Park, a lush green oasis in Cape Coast, perfect for relaxation and exploration.
Kwame Nkrumah Hall Park is located at the eastern end of the University of Cape Coast. The park is named after Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana. The park has a serene environment, perfect for a morning stroll. As an urban planner, I appreciated the park's layout and how it provided a green space for students and visitors alike. I learned that the park is named in honor of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president, recognizing his contributions to the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, and Africa.
Next, we headed to Jubilee Park in Cape Coast. The journey from Elmina to Cape Coast was relatively short, and soon we were walking through the gates of this charming park. Jubilee Park is a picturesque destination that combines nature with local culture. The park is an ideal spot for tourists looking to unwind from the hustle and bustle of city life. We enjoyed leisurely walks along well-maintained pathways, surrounded by greenery and colorful flowers. The park's expansive lawns provided ample space for picnics, making it a perfect place to relax.

Experiencing the local culture through its parks, food, and social spots is the best way to truly connect with a place.
For lunch, we ventured to Araba Chop Bar, a quintessential spot for anyone eager to delve into Ghana's culinary scene. A chop bar, I discovered, is a traditional eatery in Ghana. In Ghanaian pidgin, to chop means to eat. This casual and welcoming spot is known for its hearty local dishes. The menu featured a delightful array of options, including jollof rice, fried plantains, and grilled fish, all prepared with care and authenticity.

Dining at Araba Chop Bar was more than just a meal; it was an immersive cultural experience. The staff was friendly and eager to share stories about the dishes, providing insight into the rich cultural history behind each meal. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage with the community and learn more about the local way of life. Olivia particularly enjoyed chatting with the staff and learning about the ingredients and preparation methods. The sounds of laughter and chatter mingled with the aroma of delicious food, creating an inviting environment that embodied the spirit of Elmina.
In the evening, we decided to unwind at Koli's Pub. Located in Elmina, this pub offered a relaxed atmosphere where locals and tourists alike could enjoy a diverse selection of drinks. From traditional Ghanaian beverages to international favorites, there was something for everyone. The ambiance was lively, filled with the sounds of laughter and music.

Koli's Pub served not just as a place to enjoy refreshments but also as a cultural hub where we could connect with locals and fellow travelers. As the day wound down, I reflected on how much we had packed into a single day. From the serene parks to the savory chop bar and the lively pub, Elmina had offered us a taste of its diverse character.
Tomorrow marks the last day of our trip, and we plan to make the most of it. Our itinerary includes visits to Akotokyir magic park and Bonkus Park. We're also looking forward to trying Mabel's Table for breakfast, Anomansa Restaurant for lunch, and Lemon Beach Restaurant for our final dinner in Elmina. Before heading to the airport, we plan to do some souvenir shopping at Wan Dada collections. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm excited to share our final day with you all.
As I sit here, penning down the day's events, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had. Elmina has a way of getting under your skin, and I know I'll be carrying a piece of it with me long after we've left. The warmth of the people, the richness of the culture, and the beauty of the landscape have all combined to create a truly unforgettable trip. And as we prepare for our final day, I'm filled with anticipation for what new adventures await.
I'm particularly looking forward to visiting Akotokyir magic park and Bonkus Park tomorrow. It will be a great way to end our trip, experiencing more of Elmina's natural beauty and recreational spots. I've heard great things about Mabel's Table, and I'm excited to try their breakfast menu. Anomansa Restaurant and Lemon Beach Restaurant also come highly recommended, so I have no doubt our final meals will be memorable.
And of course, I can't forget about souvenir shopping at Wan Dada collections. I'm hoping to find some unique, locally made items to bring back home as reminders of our time here. Olivia is particularly keen on finding some traditional Ghanaian fabrics, so I'm sure we'll spend a good amount of time browsing the shop.
As I reflect on our trip, I'm reminded of why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new cultures, meeting new people, and broadening my perspective on the world. Elmina has certainly delivered on all of those fronts, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have shared this journey with Olivia and our friends. And as we prepare to head back to Toronto, I know that the memories we've made here will stay with us for a lifetime.
