Today was a day of embracing the raw beauty and restorative powers hidden within Serra da Estrela. From panoramic viewpoints that stretched across the landscape to the soothing embrace of thermal waters, it was an experience that resonated deeply within my soul. It reminded me why I crave these solo adventures – the chance to connect with nature and myself, away from the urban clamor of Toronto.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante e Loja De Desportos LINDEZA in Manteigas. It's always interesting to see these places that are a combination of things. It wasn't just a meal; it was a glimpse into the local culture, a place where you could grab a bite before gearing up for an outdoor adventure. I had a simple, traditional Portuguese breakfast – strong coffee and a pastry – fueling up for the day's explorations.

The first stop was Miradouro do Fragão do Corvo. The drive up was an experience in itself, with the landscape transforming with every turn. As I ascended, the views became increasingly dramatic, showcasing the rugged beauty of Serra da Estrela. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. November in Serra da Estrela is moderately chilly, with average highs around 14°C (58°F) and lows around 5°C (42°F). So I was glad I had dressed accordingly.

Reaching the Miradouro do Fragão do Corvo was breathtaking. Perched at approximately 1450 meters, the viewpoint offered a phenomenal vista of the Serra da Estrela area. The village of Manteigas snuggled in the valley below, the magnitude of the Zêzere Glacier Valley unfolding before me. I could see the distant city of Guarda and even some of the Spanish mountain ranges. The landscape looked like a painting, with rounded boulders mixing with heather and white-flowered broom, shaped by the wind.

The Fonte Santa is more than just a thermal spring; it's a place of healing and relaxation. I spent a couple of hours alternating between soaking in the thermal waters and lounging by the pool, reading a book I had picked up in Lisbon. It was pure bliss.

Lunch was at Restaurante Vale Do Rossim, and it was quite the experience. The restaurant has a rustic charm, and the food was simple but hearty. I opted for a traditional mountain dish – stewed lamb with potatoes and vegetables. It was the perfect comfort food after a day of exploring.

Before heading back to Manteigas, I made a detour to Sabugueiro, Portugal's highest village. I wanted to pick up some local cheese and sausages. The village itself is charming, with its granite houses and cobblestone streets. I visited a local shop and stocked up on Queijo da Serra (Estrela mountain cheese) and some cured sausages. It’s the perfect snack to bring back to Toronto, a little taste of Portugal to share with Olivia.

Dinner was at Puro in Manteigas, a restaurant that came highly recommended. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, with a fireplace crackling in the corner. The service was excellent, and the staff were friendly and attentive.

As the day comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the simple joys of solo travel. It’s about discovering hidden gems, connecting with nature, and savoring the local culture. Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of the region's natural wonders, including Miradouro Serra do Açor and Cabeça do Velho. I'm also intrigued by the Murales 3D in the area. And perhaps I'll unwind in the evening at C.C.D. Leões Da Floresta. Each day here brings a new adventure, a new discovery, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Portugal.
