Echoes of Faith and Commerce in Fes
Today, I ventured deeper into the heart of Fes, a city that resonates with centuries of history and culture. My journey was a tapestry woven with threads of faith, commerce, and the everyday lives of the Fassi people. It’s a place where the past and present dance together, creating an experience that’s both enlightening and profoundly moving.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Bistro Laaroussa. The rooftop setting offered a stunning panoramic view of the city, the perfect backdrop for a meal of traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee. The air was crisp, and the call to prayer echoed softly from the nearby mosques, a gentle reminder of the spiritual heart of Fes. I savored the moment, feeling grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in this vibrant culture.

Fuelled and ready to explore, I set out towards Bab Riafa, one of the city's many gates. As I approached, the gate stood as a portal between the old and the new. It was once a garrison post for troops from the Rif region, hence its name, Gate of the Rifians. Today, Avenue de l'UNESCO passes through it, a bustling thoroughfare connecting Fes el-Jdid with Fes el-Bali. The blend of ancient architecture and modern life was striking, a testament to Fes's ability to preserve its heritage while embracing the future. I paused to take in the scene, watching as cars and donkey carts passed through the gate, each carrying its own story.

Next on my itinerary was the famed Fez Bazar, a labyrinthine marketplace that pulsates with life. The air was thick with the aroma of spices, the sounds of bartering, and the vibrant colors of textiles and handicrafts. I wandered through the narrow alleyways, each turn revealing a new sensory delight. I bartered for a beautiful handwoven rug, the merchant sharing stories of the local artisans who had crafted it. I also picked up some spices, the scent of which immediately transported me back to Francisca’s kitchen in Lisbon.

The true beauty of Fes lies not just in its monuments, but in the everyday lives of its people, their stories etched into the very fabric of the city.
Les Articles du Rif was my next stop, a charming shop known for its unique Moroccan home goods. I was on the hunt for souvenirs that truly captured the essence of Fes. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted items, from ceramics to woodwork, each piece telling a story of Moroccan artistry. I found a beautiful tagine, perfect for recreating the flavors of Fes back home in Lisbon. I could already imagine Nilton’s face lighting up when he tasted my attempts at Moroccan cuisine.

As the day progressed, I sought out a quieter experience at the Aben Danan Synagogue, nestled in the Mellah district. This 17th-century synagogue offered a glimpse into the rich Jewish heritage of Fes. The synagogue's history is a testament to the city's diverse cultural tapestry, a place where Jewish traditions have thrived for centuries. The caretaker shared stories of the synagogue's past, its restorations, and its significance to the local Jewish community. The intricate details of the synagogue's architecture spoke volumes about the community's dedication to preserving their heritage. I was particularly moved by the Torah Ark, a testament to faith and resilience.

For lunch, I indulged in the culinary delights of La Maison Bleue, a restaurant renowned for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. The setting was exquisite, a beautifully restored riad with intricate tilework and lush gardens. I savored a tagine, the tender meat infused with aromatic spices, a true taste of Fes. It was a moment of pure culinary bliss, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life.

As evening approached, I made my way to Restaurant MB for dinner, a modern contrast to the traditional settings I had experienced throughout the day. The restaurant's sleek design and innovative menu offered a contemporary take on Moroccan cuisine. I enjoyed a delicious meal of French classics with Moroccan specialties, each dish a fusion of flavors and techniques. The ambiance was sophisticated, a perfect ending to a day of exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Fes is a city of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet modern aspirations. It’s a place where the call to prayer mingles with the sounds of commerce, where history is etched into every stone, and where the warmth of the people is as inviting as the aroma of spices in the air. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include visiting the Mausoleum of Sidi Ahmed al-Tijani, Place Rcif, and Dar al-Magana (Water Clock), I carry with me the echoes of today's discoveries, a reminder of the beauty and complexity of this ancient city.
Tomorrow, I plan to delve further into the spiritual side of Fes with a visit to the Mausoleum of Sidi Ahmed al-Tijani. I also intend to spend some time at Place Rcif, soaking in the atmosphere of this historic square, and marvel at the Dar al-Magana, the fascinating water clock. And, if the mood strikes, I might even venture out to Felix Club Fes for a nightcap. But for now, I’ll rest and dream of the vibrant tapestry of Fes.
Before I turn in for the night, I find myself already anticipating the flavors I’ll encounter at Al Oud for breakfast, the delightful lunch at Fez & Friends, and the grand finale dinner at Palais La Médina. Each meal is more than just sustenance; it’s an opportunity to connect with the local culture, to savor the unique ingredients and time-honored recipes that define Fassi cuisine. I also need to remember to charge my camera, as I almost forgot to pack my portable phone charger, and I would hate to miss out on capturing the beauty of the Mausoleum of Sidi Ahmed al-Tijani tomorrow.
Good night from Fes! I can’t wait to share more of my Moroccan adventure with you all tomorrow.
As I reflect on my day, I'm reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta, a famous Moroccan scholar and traveler: Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.. Fes has indeed left me speechless, and I hope my stories are doing justice to its magic.
I also found out that the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music will take place from May 16th to 24th, and the Fez Gourmet event should be from March 1st to 15th. I am sorry I will miss them, but I will make sure to let my readers know to plan accordingly if they want to attend.
