Fez Unveiled: A Day of Discovery
Today was a day of wandering and wonder, a true immersion into the heart of Fes. I set out with no particular agenda other than to absorb the city, and it certainly delivered. From breathtaking panoramic views to the intricate details of ancient architecture, Fes revealed its layers one step at a time. I even managed to find a rooftop bar to take in the sunset, and reflect on the day's adventures.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at La Breva. The morning air was crisp, a gentle reminder that even in February, Fes can have a refreshing coolness. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea and an assortment of pastries, while watching the city slowly awaken. It's moments like these, sipping tea and watching the world go by, that make me feel so connected to a place.
Fueled and ready, I made my way towards the Medina Viewpoint. The walk itself was an experience, navigating the labyrinthine streets, each turn revealing a new vista of vibrant colors and bustling activity. The Medina Viewpoint offered a stunning panorama of the sprawling medina. From this vantage point, the city unfolded like a tapestry, a sea of rooftops punctuated by minarets reaching for the sky. I could see the distant hills, a stark contrast to the urban landscape below. It was the perfect spot to get my bearings and appreciate the sheer scale of Fes el Bali.

To truly understand a city, one must not only walk its streets but also see it from above, gaining a perspective that reveals its intricate beauty and boundless spirit.
Next on my list was Bab Boujloud, the iconic Blue Gate. As I approached, the gate's vibrant blue façade stood out against the surrounding sandstone buildings. The intricate tilework was mesmerizing, a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of Moroccan artisans. Passing through the gate, I was immediately enveloped in the vibrant chaos of the medina. The air was thick with the scent of spices, leather, and freshly baked bread. The sounds of vendors hawking their wares, artisans hammering metal, and donkeys clip-clopping along the narrow streets created a symphony of urban life.

Navigating the medina was an adventure in itself. Every turn presented a new sensory experience, a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and smells. I found myself drawn into the maze of shops, each one offering a treasure trove of handcrafted goods. I admired the intricate carpets, the delicate pottery, and the gleaming metalwork. I even haggled for a small leather pouch, a memento of my time in Fes.
As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, I made my way towards the Marinid Tombs. Perched on a hill overlooking the city, these ancient ruins offered not only a glimpse into Fes's rich history but also a stunning panoramic view. The tombs themselves were weathered and worn, but they stood as silent witnesses to centuries of history. I wandered through the ruins, imagining the sultans and dignitaries who were once laid to rest here.

The view from the Marinid Tombs was simply breathtaking. As the sun began to set, the sky was painted in hues of orange, pink, and purple. The city below was bathed in a warm, golden light, creating a magical and unforgettable scene. I watched as the call to prayer echoed from the mosques throughout the city, a haunting and beautiful sound that resonated deep within my soul. It was a moment of perfect serenity, a reminder of the beauty and spirituality that permeates every aspect of Moroccan life.
After soaking in the sunset, I decided to find a rooftop bar for a nightcap. Rooftop Nour Plazza was the perfect spot. Sipping on a refreshing drink, I watched as the city lights twinkled below, the sounds of Fes drifting up on the cool evening air. I thought about Francisca and Nilton back home in Lisbon. I miss them terribly, but I know this journey is also for them, that the stories and experiences I gather here will enrich our lives in ways I can't yet imagine. I even hummed a Morna tune, a little piece of Cabo Verde, under my breath.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into the heart of the medina, exploring Bab Riafa, getting lost in the Fez Bazar, and visiting the Aben Danan Synagogue. I'm also hoping to pick up a few souvenirs at Les Articles du Rif. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today, the panoramic views, the bustling streets, and the ancient ruins, all woven together into a tapestry of unforgettable experiences. Fes, you have captured my heart.
Before heading back to my guesthouse for the night, I enjoyed a delightful dinner at Dar Roumana. The ambiance was enchanting, with the restaurant set in a beautifully restored Fassi mansion. The Franco-Moroccan cuisine was exquisite, a perfect blend of local ingredients and French cooking techniques. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

It’s funny, you know? I almost forgot my portable phone charger and sunscreen before leaving Lisbon. I’m glad I remembered the sunscreen at least; the sun here, even in February, is quite strong. I'll need to remember to buy a charger tomorrow, though, as I want to keep my phone ready for photos and notes.
What a day! I am really looking forward to what tomorrow brings. Good night from Fes!
