Fes Unveiled: Gardens, Schools, and the Soul of a City
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through the many layers that make Fes so captivating. From the tranquil beauty of its gardens to the intricate details of its ancient schools and the poignant history of its Jewish quarter, Fes revealed more of its soul to me. Each location whispered stories of the past, inviting me to reflect on the city's rich heritage and its enduring spirit.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Tresor Fes. The rooftop setting offered a stunning panoramic view of the city as I savored traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee. The warm hospitality of the staff made me feel right at home, and I knew I was in for a great day exploring Fes.
First on my list was Jnan Sbil, a sprawling garden oasis just outside the bustling medina. As I stepped through the gates, the noise of the city faded away, replaced by the gentle rustling of leaves and the sweet scent of orange blossoms. It was a welcome escape from the intensity of the souks. Wandering through the meticulously manicured pathways, I admired the diverse collection of plants, a testament to Morocco's rich botanical heritage. The serene ponds reflected the clear blue sky, creating a sense of tranquility that washed over me. It was the perfect place to gather my thoughts and prepare for the day ahead.

The beauty of Fes lies not only in its grand monuments but also in the quiet corners where history and nature intertwine.
Leaving the gardens, I ventured deeper into the heart of the medina, drawn to the Al Attarine Madrasa. This 14th-century Koranic school is a masterpiece of Marinid architecture, a testament to the artistic and intellectual achievements of the era. The intricate details of the courtyard left me in awe – the delicate stucco carvings, the vibrant zellij mosaics, and the graceful arches all harmonizing to create a space of serene beauty. I imagined the students who once walked these halls, their minds filled with knowledge and their hearts set on spiritual enlightenment. Standing there, I felt a connection to the past, a sense of continuity that transcended time.

After immersing myself in the beauty of the Madrasa, it was time for lunch. I found myself at Chez Hakim, a local restaurant recommended by several people I met. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the flavors of Moroccan cuisine. I ordered the chicken couscous, a classic dish that never fails to satisfy. The tender chicken, the fluffy couscous, and the flavorful broth created a symphony of tastes that danced on my palate. It was a simple yet satisfying meal, a reminder that the best things in life are often the simplest.

With my stomach full and my spirits high, I continued my exploration of Fes, this time heading towards the Mellah, the city's old Jewish quarter. As I walked through the narrow streets, I noticed a distinct difference in the architecture, a blend of Moroccan and Jewish styles that reflected the unique history of the community. The Mellah dates back to the 15th century when the Jewish population was moved here by the ruling Marinid dynasty. Despite facing periods of hardship and discrimination, the Jewish community thrived in Fes, contributing to the city's cultural and economic development.

Visiting the Mellah was a poignant experience, a reminder of the complexities of history and the importance of understanding different cultures. Although the Jewish population has dwindled in recent years, the Mellah remains a testament to their legacy, a reminder of their contributions to the city's rich tapestry.
Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. I stopped by Coin Berbere Carpets & Antiques, a renowned shop known for its high-quality rugs and antiques. The shop was a treasure trove of Berber artistry, filled with carpets of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Abdul, the owner, greeted me warmly and shared his knowledge of the different tribes and their weaving traditions. I was mesmerized by the intricate designs and the stories they told. Though I didn't buy a carpet today, I left with a newfound appreciation for the artistry and craftsmanship of the Berber people.

For dinner, I ventured to Les Mystères de Dar Tajine, a restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and charming atmosphere. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet corner of the medina, a hidden gem that exuded warmth and hospitality. I ordered the traditional tagine, a slow-cooked stew that is a staple of Moroccan cuisine. The tagine was a flavorful explosion, a medley of spices and aromas that transported me to another world. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, a culinary journey that captured the essence of Fes.

As the sun set over the city, casting a golden glow on the ancient walls, I reflected on my day in Fes. I had journeyed through gardens, schools, and historic quarters, each location offering a unique glimpse into the city's soul. I had savored the flavors of Moroccan cuisine, interacted with the warm and welcoming locals, and immersed myself in the rich culture of Fes. It was a day I would never forget, a reminder of the beauty and diversity of our world.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Borj Nord Museum, the Andalusian Mosque, and explore the bustling Talaa Kebira. I am also looking forward to unwinding at the Zen Garden bar in the evening. Each day in Fes brings new adventures, and I am excited to see what tomorrow holds.
The Marathon of Fes took place just a few days ago on February 16th. I am definitely adding it to my calendar for next year. I am not sure I will run the full marathon, but the half marathon sounds like a great challenge and a fun way to see the city.
My thoughts also drift to Francisca and Nilton back in Lisbon. I know they would have loved to wander through Jnan Sbil with me, Nilton chasing the pigeons and Francisca admiring the intricate tile work of the Madrasa. I picked up a small, hand-painted ceramic bowl in the Mellah, its blue and white patterns reminiscent of the Portuguese azulejos, a little piece of Fes to bring home to her.
Before drifting off to sleep, I listened to some traditional Cabo Verdean music, a comforting reminder of home. Although I am thousands of miles away, my heart remains connected to my roots, to the music and memories that have shaped me into the person I am today.
As I close my eyes, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this amazing city. Fes has captured my heart with its beauty, its history, and its vibrant culture. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
