A Day of Discovery in Fes

Today in Fes was a journey through time and culture, a blend of historical exploration and spiritual reflection. From the panoramic views atop Borj Nord to the tranquil courtyards of the Andalusian Mosque, and the bustling energy of Talaa Kebira, Fes revealed more of its intricate character. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to learn, and to share these experiences with you all.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Ouliya. The warm hospitality and delicious Moroccan cuisine, including a delightful tagine, set the perfect tone for the day ahead. It's amazing how a good meal can fuel not just the body, but also the spirit, preparing me for the adventures that awaited. I must make sure to tell Francisca about the tagine, I am sure she will want to try and replicate it once I am back in Lisbon.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to Borj Nord, a fortress perched on a hill overlooking the city. The brisk morning air was invigorating as I made my way through the winding streets of the medina. Reaching the fortress, I was immediately struck by its imposing structure and the breathtaking views it offered.

The Borj Nord Museum, housed within the fortress, is a treasure trove of Moroccan military history. As a tour guide, I am always drawn to historical artifacts and stories, and this museum did not disappoint. From ancient weaponry to intricate uniforms, the exhibits provided a fascinating glimpse into Morocco's past. I spent hours wandering through the museum, imagining the battles fought and the lives lived within these walls. The panoramic views of Fes from the fortress were simply stunning, stretching out as far as the eye could see. I took countless photos, trying to capture the beauty and grandeur of the city below. As someone who loves to collect vintage postcards of the places I visit, I knew that the images I captured today would make for some incredible additions to my collection.

Exploring Fes is like stepping back in time, where every corner holds a story and every experience is a sensory delight.

Leaving Borj Nord, I made my way to the Andalusian Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in Fes. Founded in the 9th century, the mosque is a testament to the city's rich cultural and religious heritage. As I approached the mosque, the sounds of the bustling medina faded away, replaced by a sense of tranquility and peace. The intricate tile work and ornate carvings of the mosque were simply breathtaking, showcasing the skill and artistry of Moroccan craftsmen. I spent some time in the courtyard, admiring the architecture and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Although I couldn't enter the prayer hall as a non-Muslim, I felt a sense of connection to the spiritual heart of Fes. It reminded me of the importance of faith and community, values that are deeply ingrained in the culture of Cabo Verde as well.

After my visit to the mosque, I ventured into Talaa Kebira, the main thoroughfare of the Fes el Bali. The street was a sensory overload, a vibrant mix of colors, sounds, and smells. Vendors hawked their wares, donkeys laden with goods trod through the crowds, and the aroma of spices filled the air. I wandered through the souks, marveling at the handcrafted goods on display. From intricate pottery to exquisite leather products, the craftsmanship was simply astounding. I couldn't resist purchasing a few souvenirs for Francisca and Nilton, knowing that they would appreciate the beauty and artistry of these Moroccan treasures.

For lunch, I stopped at Darori, a restaurant recommended by a local artisan. The restaurant was located in a beautifully restored riad, with intricate tile work and a tranquil courtyard. The food was exquisite, a fusion of traditional Moroccan flavors and modern culinary techniques. I savored every bite, appreciating the skill and creativity of the chef. I opted for the lamb tagine, and I was not disappointed, it was exquisite!

As the afternoon wore on, I decided to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the medina. I found a quiet spot at Zen Garden, a rooftop bar with stunning views of the city. I ordered a refreshing mint tea and sat back to relax, enjoying the cool breeze and the panoramic vista. The bar was a welcome oasis, a place to escape the chaos of the medina and recharge my batteries. I made a mental note to bring Francisca here someday, I am sure she would love the vibe.

As I reflect on my experiences today, I am struck by the richness and complexity of Fes. The city is a living tapestry, woven from threads of history, culture, and tradition. It is a place that challenges the senses, stimulates the mind, and nourishes the soul. And as I prepare for another day of exploration tomorrow, with plans to visit the Merinide Necropole and the Henna Souk, I am filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement. I am eager to uncover more of the city's hidden gems and to share my discoveries with you all. The Necropole should prove great for pictures, and I am looking forward to seeing the pottery at Henna Souk, perhaps I will buy something for the house in Lisbon.

Tonight, I am grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Fes. It is a city that has captured my heart and ignited my imagination. And as I drift off to sleep, I dream of the adventures that await me tomorrow, and the stories that I will share with you all.

I must remember to call Francisca and Nilton when I get the chance. I am sure they are eager to hear about my adventures in Fes. I miss them dearly, but I know that this journey is not just for me, it is for us, for our family, and for the readers of my blog. And I am determined to make the most of it, to learn, to grow, and to share my experiences with the world.

Perhaps I will even try to learn a few phrases in Arabic, to better connect with the local culture and to show my respect for their traditions. That would be a great way to honor my heritage and to bridge the gap between cultures. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, and I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful and fascinating city.

I am also grateful for the opportunity to reflect on my life and my purpose. This solo journey has given me the time and space to think about what is truly important to me, and to reaffirm my commitment to sharing my love of travel and culture with the world. And I am excited to continue this journey, to explore new places, to meet new people, and to share my experiences with you all. Thank you for joining me on this adventure, and I look forward to sharing more of my stories with you soon.
