A Dream in Blue

After a long journey from Germany, I finally arrived in the famed Blue City of Morocco, Chefchaouen. The anticipation had been building for months, and I was eager to see if this place lived up to the hype. As a travel blogger, I've seen my fair share of beautiful places, but something about Chefchaouen's unique aesthetic and tranquil atmosphere called to me. I couldn't wait to wander through its winding alleys and immerse myself in its vibrant culture.

My adventure began as soon as I stepped off the bus from Tangier. The air was crisp, with a hint of woodsmoke, a welcome change from the bustling city I had just left behind. The bus ride itself was stunning, a scenic route through the Rif Mountains, offering glimpses of the rugged landscape that cradles this blue gem. I traveled solo on this trip, a conscious decision to allow myself the freedom to explore and reflect without distractions. Maximilian and Astrid were definitely missed, but I knew this experience would be something special I could share with them later.

The temperature in Chefchaouen in October is very pleasant, with highs around 25°C and lows around 15°C. The weather today was perfect as the sun shone down on the blue city.

First Stop: Hotel Barcelona

After arriving, I checked into Hotel Barcelona, my home for the next ten days. The hotel is ideally located, right in the heart of Chefchaouen, offering stunning views and easy access to all the main attractions. After settling in, I grabbed my camera and notebook, ready to explore. I had forgotten my portable phone charger and travel adapter, but I could always buy these in the medina.

Lost in the Medina

As soon as I stepped into the Chefchaouen Medina, I was immediately captivated by the mesmerizing shades of blue that adorned every building. From soft pastel hues to deep, vibrant indigos, the colors created a dreamlike atmosphere that was both calming and invigorating. The Medina itself is a maze of narrow, winding streets, each turn revealing a new visual delight. I wandered aimlessly, letting my curiosity guide me, snapping photos of the intricate doorways, colorful flower pots, and the smiling faces of the local residents.

The air was filled with the sounds of artisans at work, the aroma of spices, and the melodic calls of vendors selling their wares. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way. I found myself stopping frequently to admire the craftsmanship of the local goods, from handwoven carpets to intricately carved wooden artifacts. I even picked up a few souvenirs for Astrid and Maximilian, knowing they would appreciate the unique artistry of this place.

Chefchaouen is more than just a visual spectacle; it's a place where the colors tell a story, where the culture is palpable, and where every corner holds a new discovery.

As I explored, I couldn't help but wonder about the origins of the blue color that defines this city. I learned that there are several theories, ranging from practical reasons like keeping the houses cool and repelling mosquitoes , to more spiritual explanations related to Jewish traditions. Regardless of the reason, the blue hues create a sense of unity and tranquility that is unlike anything I've ever experienced.

A Culinary Journey Begins at Cafe Clock

For breakfast, I decided to try Cafe Clock, a place I had read about in several travel blogs. The cafe had a lovely vibe, with music and a rooftop terrace that offered panoramic views of the Medina. I ordered avocado toast, a simple but satisfying meal, and enjoyed the lively atmosphere as I planned my day ahead. The staff were friendly and helpful, providing tips on the best places to visit and things to do. I saw bunches of fresh herbs and greens go into the kitchen.

Exploring the Kasbah

Next on my list was the Kasbah, a historic fortress located in the heart of the Medina. Built in the 15th century, the Kasbah once served as a stronghold against Portuguese invasions. Today, it houses an ethnological museum that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the region. As I wandered through the exhibits, I was fascinated by the displays of traditional musical instruments, pottery, and weaponry. I learned about the Berber people who have called this area home for centuries and gained a deeper understanding of the region's complex history.

The Kasbah also boasts a beautiful Andalusian garden, a peaceful oasis of lush greenery and trickling fountains. I took a moment to relax here, enjoying the serenity and reflecting on the stories I had uncovered in the museum. Climbing the Kasbah tower provided a breathtaking panoramic view of Chefchaouen, the city stretching out beneath me in a sea of blue.

Lunch at Restaurant Bab Ssour

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurant Bab Ssour, recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. I wasn't disappointed. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I started with the Baisara, a traditional bean soup that tasted like vegan fondue, and then indulged in a flavorful Kefta tagine with small meatballs. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the skill and passion of the chefs. I finished my meal with a refreshing yogurt with honey and raisins, a perfect ending to a satisfying lunch.

Shopping at Blue. concept store

After lunch, I did some shopping at Blue. concept store. It was the perfect place to find unique, locally made goods. I was able to find a beautiful rug to take back home to Bamberg for our living room. This would remind me of my trip and bring the colors of Chefchaouen into our home.

Dinner at Chez Hicham

As evening approached, I sought out Chez Hicham for dinner, drawn in by the promise of traditional Moroccan dishes. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and I decided to try the chicken tagine, a local specialty. The tagine was served in a traditional earthenware pot, and the aroma alone was enough to make my mouth water. The chicken was tender and flavorful, infused with the warmth of spices like ginger, cumin, and turmeric. It was the perfect way to end my first day in Chefchaouen.

After dinner, I strolled through the Medina one last time, soaking in the magical atmosphere of the Blue City. The streets were quieter now, the shops closed, and the air cooler. The soft glow of the streetlights cast long shadows, adding to the enchantment of the scene. I felt a sense of peace and contentment, grateful for the opportunity to experience this extraordinary place.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Ras El Ma, a natural spring and waterfall just outside the Medina. I've heard it's a great place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the region. I also want to see the Bouzafer Mosque, which I've read offers stunning views of the city. I might even check out Bar Oum Rabie.

As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel excited about the days ahead. Chefchaouen has already exceeded my expectations, and I know there are many more adventures to be had in this Blue Pearl of Morocco. I am so happy to be here in Chefchaouen, and I can not wait to see what adventures await me tomorrow.
