First Day in Paradise: Arrábida Natural Park

After months of planning and dreaming, David and I finally arrived in Parque Natural da Arrábida! The anticipation had been building ever since we booked our flights from Berlin, and let me tell you, the reality far exceeded our expectations. This first day was all about immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of this coastal paradise and savoring the local flavors. We were ready to embrace the adventure, and Arrábida welcomed us with open arms.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at O Zeca, a charming restaurant nestled in the heart of the park. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Portuguese coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. I opted for the classic *pão com manteiga* (bread with butter) and a *galão* (a latte-like coffee drink), while David, ever the adventurous one, chose a local pastry filled with creamy custard. Sipping our coffees, we discussed our plans for the day, excitement bubbling within us.

Fueled by our delicious breakfast, we set off to explore the Parque Natural da Arrábida. The park, established in 1976, spans over 176 square kilometers, boasting a unique blend of Mediterranean flora and fauna. As we drove along the winding roads, the views were simply breathtaking. The turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean crashed against the rugged coastline, while the rolling hills were carpeted in lush greenery. I couldn't resist stopping at every viewpoint to capture the stunning scenery with my camera. David, ever the patient husband, happily obliged, knowing how much I love documenting our travels.

Our first stop was the Convento Velho da Arrábida. Perched high on the hills, this historic monastery dates back to the 16th century. As we walked through the ancient stone walls, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. The convent, founded in 1542 by Friar Martinho de Santa Maria, a Spanish Franciscan, was once a place of solitude and contemplation for the monks who lived there. The stark simplicity of the architecture and the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape were a testament to their devotion. The monastery is divided into two sections: the Convento Velho (Old Convent), located on the highest part of the mountain, and the Convento Novo (New Convent), built further down the slope. We explored both, marveling at the way the buildings seemed to blend seamlessly into the natural environment.

The weather was perfect for hiking, with a gentle breeze and clear skies. So, we decided to embark on one of the many trails that crisscross the park. As we walked deeper into the forest, the air filled with the scent of pine and wildflowers. We spotted several birds flitting through the trees and even caught a glimpse of a wild rabbit darting across our path. David, with his keen interest in botany, pointed out various plant species, explaining their unique characteristics and medicinal properties. I was fascinated by the park's diverse ecosystem, a true testament to the importance of conservation.

After a few hours of hiking, our stomachs started to rumble. Luckily, we had planned to have lunch at D'uportinho, a restaurant known for its fresh seafood and stunning views of Portinho da Arrábida beach. We snagged a table on the terrace and ordered grilled sea bass with a side of roasted vegetables. The fish was cooked to perfection, flaky and moist, and the vegetables were bursting with flavor. As we savored our meal, we watched the boats bobbing gently in the bay and listened to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. It was pure bliss.

Portinho da Arrábida beach is often called one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal, and it’s easy to see why. The water is crystal clear and inviting, although a bit chilly for a swim in early May. We strolled along the shore, collecting seashells and dipping our toes in the refreshing water. I couldn't resist taking a few more photos of the picturesque landscape. David even tried his hand at skipping stones, much to my amusement. He’s usually so serious, it’s great to see him let loose and have fun.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a quick stop at Gazzel Concept Store - Sesimbra II. I had read about this charming shop that sells local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few handmade ceramic tiles and a bottle of locally produced olive oil as gifts for our friends back in Berlin. David, of course, found a book about the history of Portuguese wines, adding to his ever-growing collection.

For dinner, we decided to try Restaurante Cantinho da Regina, a local favorite known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. We ordered *cataplana de marisco*, a seafood stew cooked in a copper pot, and a bottle of vinho verde, a light and refreshing green wine. The stew was rich and flavorful, filled with clams, mussels, shrimp, and fish. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Arrábida. As we walked back to our accommodation under the starlit sky, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience.

Arrábida Natural Park had already captured our hearts with its stunning natural beauty, delicious cuisine, and warm hospitality. I'm so excited to see what adventures tomorrow will bring. We plan to visit Miradouro do Norte and Lapa de Santa Margarida, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Sky Bar Caravela. I'm also looking forward to trying the local breakfast at A Vela Branca. I have a feeling this trip will be one for the books.

Today reminded me why we love to travel – to discover new places, experience different cultures, and create lasting memories. And most importantly, to reconnect with nature and each other.

Until tomorrow!

P.S. I almost forgot! I realized I left my portable power bank and local hiking maps back in Berlin. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!
