Explore the stunning viewpoints and hidden gems of Arrábida Natural Park, from breathtaking vistas to the serene Lapa de Santa Margarida.
Arrábida's Coastal Charms
Today was a day of exploration and breathtaking views, as David and I delved deeper into the heart of Arrábida Natural Park. With each winding road and hidden path, we uncovered more of the region's serene beauty and rich history. It was a day filled with natural wonders and culinary delights that truly captured the essence of Portugal.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at A Vela Branca. Overlooking the Sado Bay, the restaurant offered an exceptional landscape. It was the perfect way to start our day, fueling up with traditional Portuguese pastries and strong coffee while soaking in the stunning views of the park. The restaurant is located in the Albarquel Urban Park in Setúbal. I enjoyed starting the day with such an amazing view.

Fueled and ready, David and I set off to explore the viewpoints along the Estrada da Escarpa. This road is known for offering the best views of Arrábida Natural Park. Our first stop was Miradouro do Norte, a spot that promised unparalleled views of the area. As we arrived, the vista unfolded before us, a sprawling valley dotted with ridges and stretching out towards the horizon. The 16th-century Franciscan monastery peeked out through the trees, adding a touch of history to the scene. I could see Lisbon in the distance. We spent a good while here, snapping photos and simply breathing in the fresh, floral-scented air.

The drive itself was an adventure. The road wound along the cliffs, each curve revealing more dramatic coastal views. We stopped at several lay-bys, just to admire the scenery and capture the perfect shot. I made David pose for a few photos, of course, with the rolling hills as his backdrop. He pretended to grumble, but I caught him smiling.
Our next destination was Lapa de Santa Margarida, a natural cave with a chapel inside. The descent to the cave was quite the experience. More than 200 steps led down the mountainside to almost sea level. The path was narrow, and I was grateful for my hiking boots. David, ever the gentleman, offered his hand to help me navigate the trickier parts.

Reaching the cave, I was immediately struck by its unique beauty. The chapel, though small, was ornately painted and decorated with gifts and offerings. The cave itself opened up to the Sado River, providing a beautiful view of the water. It was a truly special place, a blend of natural wonder and human devotion. I imagined the monks who retreated here for prayerful getaways, finding solace in the quietude and the stunning surroundings.
Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are hidden just beneath the surface, waiting to be uncovered.
After the climb back up – which was definitely more challenging than the descent – we were ready for lunch. We drove to Charroco Restaurante in Setúbal, known for its fresh seafood. The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign. We ordered grilled fish, a local specialty, and it was cooked to perfection. The flavors of the sea burst in my mouth, and I savored every bite. David, who usually prefers meat dishes, was equally impressed. We paired our meal with a local wine, enhancing the dining experience.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to indulge in a little afternoon treat. We headed to Sky Bar Caravela, a rooftop bar offering panoramic views. Sipping on refreshing cocktails, we watched the sun begin its descent, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. The bar was lively, filled with people enjoying the stunning scenery and the vibrant atmosphere. David and I found a cozy corner and simply enjoyed each other's company, reflecting on the day's adventures.

As the evening approached, we made our way to O Velho e o Mar for dinner. This restaurant, located on the promenade in Sesimbra, boasts stunning ocean views. We opted for a table on the terrace, wanting to soak in the sea breeze and the sound of the waves. The seafood here was exceptional, incredibly fresh and flavorful. I chose a simple grilled fish, while David went for a traditional Portuguese stew. Both were delicious, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to quality and authenticity.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to explore Sesimbra Beach and Castelo de Sesimbra. I'm particularly excited to visit the castle, as I've read about its rich history and stunning views. We'll also be trying out Taberna Porto à Noite for breakfast, Portofino for lunch, and Feito ao Bife for dinner. And, of course, I'm looking forward to browsing the unique finds at My Favourite Things.
Today was a day of discovery, a reminder of the hidden gems that await those who venture off the beaten path. Arrábida Natural Park has captured my heart with its natural beauty, its rich history, and its culinary delights. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
One thing I forgot to pack was a portable power bank. It would have been useful to have it today to ensure that our phones were fully charged and ready to capture every moment of our adventure.
It's amazing to think that Neanderthal remains have been found in caves in Arrábida. It is such an ancient place, filled with so much history.
