It was a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and profound cultural immersion, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for this land's rich heritage. The blend of Roman grandeur and spiritual significance made for an unforgettable experience.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at La Baraka. The morning air was fresh, carrying the scent of mint tea and freshly baked bread. We savored the traditional Moroccan breakfast, fueling up for a day of exploration. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and I even managed to exchange a few words in Arabic, much to Jan's amusement.

Journey to Volubilis
After breakfast, we set off to explore the ancient Roman city of Volubilis. As we approached the site, the vast expanse of ruins against the backdrop of the Moroccan countryside was truly breathtaking. The drive itself was scenic, with rolling hills and olive groves painting a picturesque landscape.

Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is remarkably well-preserved. As we wandered through the ruins, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like here centuries ago. The intricate mosaics, grand arches, and towering columns spoke of a vibrant and sophisticated civilization. Jan, with his engineering background, was particularly fascinated by the structural ingenuity of the Roman architects.
To walk through Volubilis is to walk through the pages of history, each stone whispering tales of emperors, merchants, and everyday life in a bygone era.
We strolled along the Decumanus Maximus, the city's main street, marveling at the Arch of Caracalla. It was erected in 217 AD to honor Emperor Caracalla and his mother, Julia Domna. The arch, though weathered by time, still stands as a testament to Roman power and influence.
The mosaics of Volubilis are stunning. The House of Orpheus, with its depiction of the mythical musician, was particularly captivating. Each tile seemed to tell a story, a vibrant tableau frozen in time. Jan, ever the pragmatist, was impressed by the durability of these ancient artworks.
As we explored further, we came across the remains of the basilica and the temple, each structure hinting at the city's former grandeur. It's incredible to think that Volubilis was once a thriving metropolis, a vital outpost of the Roman Empire. The city's location in a fertile agricultural area contributed to its prosperity, with olive growing being a major industry.
Lunch Amidst History
For lunch, we chose the Restaurant Volubilis, located near the archaeological site. It provided a perfect setting to reflect on the morning's discoveries. I ordered a traditional tagine, savoring the rich flavors and aromatic spices. Jan opted for grilled meats, a hearty meal that satisfied his appetite. The restaurant offered stunning views of the Volubilis ruins, enhancing the dining experience.
Paying Respects to Moulay Idriss
In the afternoon, we journeyed to the sacred town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Nestled in the hills, this town is named after Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty and a significant figure in Moroccan history. As a cultural liaison, I felt a deep connection to this pilgrimage site, recognizing its importance in shaping Morocco's identity.

Moulay Idriss is a town of immense spiritual significance. It served as a refuge for Idriss I, who fled from Mecca in the late 8th century. He united the disparate Berber tribes and established the first Moroccan Islamic state. His tomb, located in the heart of the town, is a place of great reverence.
Although non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the mausoleum, we were able to experience the town's unique atmosphere. The narrow, winding streets, the whitewashed buildings, and the vibrant souks exuded a sense of timelessness. I made sure to wear my headscarf out of respect for local customs, a small gesture that I felt was important.
We visited the Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er, taking in the sights and sounds of this holy place. The air was thick with incense, and the murmur of prayers filled the streets. I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me, a feeling that is hard to describe.
As we walked through the town, we encountered many locals who were warm and welcoming. Despite the language barrier, we managed to communicate through smiles and gestures. I purchased some local handicrafts, supporting the community and taking home a tangible reminder of our visit.
Evening Reflections
As evening approached, we enjoyed dinner at Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon. The restaurant offered a panoramic view of Moulay Idriss, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. We savored traditional Moroccan dishes, reflecting on the day's experiences. Jan, who initially was more interested in the engineering aspects of the trip, admitted that he was deeply moved by the spiritual atmosphere of Moulay Idriss.

Jan is keen on visiting the local shops at زيارة باب مولاي إدريس, hoping to find some unique souvenirs.
