Finding My Footing in Moulay Idriss

My journey to Morocco has begun, and what an arrival it was! Today, I stepped into the heart of the Moulay Idriss Downtown, a place where history whispers from every stone and the spirit of Morocco dances in the air. It's a world away from my familiar Potsdam, but already, I feel a sense of connection to this land and its people.

The flight to Fez was smooth, and the transition to the smaller roads leading to Moulay Idriss was seamless. I opted for a local taxi from Fez, which turned out to be a delightful introduction to Moroccan hospitality. My driver, Hassan, shared stories of his family and the region, making the journey feel less like a commute and more like a warm welcome.

My first impression of Moulay Idriss was one of awe. Perched on the slopes of Mount Zerhoun, the town unfolds in a cascade of white buildings, punctuated by the green tiles of its sacred sites. The air is filled with the scent of spices and the murmur of daily life, a symphony that's both calming and invigorating. As I settled into my guesthouse—a simple but charming dwelling—I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for what the next few days would bring. I miss Hans and Leila already, but I know this solo journey will be deeply enriching.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in discovering new perspectives.

My exploration began in the heart of it all: Moulay Idriss Downtown.

The energy here is palpable, a vibrant mix of locals and visitors navigating the narrow streets. The shops are treasure troves of Moroccan craftsmanship, from intricately woven carpets to delicate ceramics. I couldn't resist picking up a few small souvenirs – a hand-painted bowl for Leila and a leather-bound journal for myself, hoping to capture every moment of this adventure.

Next, I ventured towards the Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er, the final resting place of the town's namesake and a pivotal figure in Moroccan history. As a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, Moulay Idriss I brought Islam to this region and founded the first Moroccan dynasty. The mausoleum is a place of reverence and pilgrimage, its architecture a stunning display of Islamic artistry. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter, the exterior alone is a sight to behold, with its intricate tile work and serene courtyards. The mausoleum stands as a testament to the rich history and spirituality of Morocco. It commemorates Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty and a pivotal figure in the spread of Islam in the region. The striking architecture captivates with its intricate tile work and serene courtyards, inviting reflection and admiration.

For breakfast, I had the pleasure of dining at Restaurant Moulay Idriss. It was a delightful experience, offering a taste of authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff treated me like family. I savored a traditional tagine, the flavors a beautiful blend of spices and tender meat. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration, and left me feeling deeply connected to the local culture.

Lunch was a treat at Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon. The café offers a unique blend of traditional Moroccan dishes and modern café favorites, making it an ideal stop for both casual diners and those looking to indulge in local flavors. I enjoyed a flavorful salad, accompanied by refreshing mint tea. The café's ambiance was warm and inviting, adorned with local decor, creating a perfect setting for enjoying a meal. The attentive staff was always ready to assist guests in choosing the best options to satisfy their cravings.

As evening approached, I found myself drawn to the قيصرية مولاي ادريس, a bustling marketplace where locals and visitors alike gather to shop and socialize. The atmosphere was electric, with vendors calling out their wares and the scent of spices filling the air. I picked up some local pastries, sweet and delicious, and enjoyed them while watching the world go by. It was a perfect way to immerse myself in the local culture and connect with the community.

Dinner was at SCORPION HOUSE, a restaurant recommended for its unique Moroccan cuisine and incredible views. The climb up the narrow, stair-cased streets to reach the restaurant was an adventure in itself, but the panoramic vistas from the terrace were well worth the effort. The house is set high on a hillside, and the views from the terraces are magical at any time of day, but an early evening in Moulay Idriss is something special. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan meal, savoring the flavors and aromas of the region. The whole experience was a feast for the senses, and I left feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a special place. According to reviews, some visitors found the personalized menus underwhelming, but I found the food and the views to be exceptional.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the town, I found myself reflecting on the day's experiences. Moulay Idriss is a place of profound beauty and rich history, a place where the past and present intertwine. I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this sacred town and connect with its people. I am also grateful for Hans's support of my cultural explorations, even when he cannot join me.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis and the historic site of Heri es-Souani. I am eager to delve deeper into the history of this region and uncover more of its hidden gems. I might also check out Dar Zerhoune, a local bar, for a relaxing evening.

Until then, I bid you goodnight from Moulay Idriss, a place that has already captured my heart.

The hotel options here are limited. I read about Dar Zerhoune, owned by a British woman, Rose, and La Colombe Blanche, which offers great views and is close to Volubilis. I am glad I chose to stay in a local guesthouse for a more immersive experience.

The local market, which operates on Saturdays, offered a glimpse into the daily life of the community. I saw gorgeous produce and interacted with friendly vendors. It was a very special experience.

I learned that Moulay Idriss is considered one of the holiest places in Morocco. It is said that six pilgrimages to Moulay Idriss are worth one Hajj to Mecca. The town was forbidden to non-Muslims until 1916, and non-Muslims were not allowed to stay overnight until 2005. Even now, few tourists stay overnight, making the experience even more special.

I am excited about tomorrow's adventure and look forward to sharing my experiences with you all.

The town is also famous for its nougat candy, which is sold at stands all around the square and near the mosque. Perhaps I will try some tomorrow!

The people of Moulay Idriss are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I felt safe and comfortable exploring the town on my own. I am grateful for their hospitality and kindness.

I am also mindful of the Trip Essentials I forgot – sunscreen and a portable phone charger. I will make sure to purchase these items tomorrow.

My journey has just begun, and I am already filled with a sense of wonder and excitement. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings! I will remember to respect local customs, especially when visiting religious sites.

According to online reviews, Café Restaurant Ain Zwawk offers authentic Moroccan flavors and breathtaking views. I will consider visiting this café for breakfast tomorrow.

My first day in Moulay Idriss was nothing short of magical. From exploring the Medina to savoring local cuisine and supporting local artisans, I immersed myself in the town's rich culture and history. As I walked back to my guesthouse, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the town. The panoramic views from the hills were breathtaking, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this unique place. I am struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people.

As I reflect on my day, I am reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta, a famous Moroccan explorer:

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

And so, my friends, I am now a storyteller, eager to share the tales of Moulay Idriss with you. Goodnight, and may your dreams be filled with the magic of Morocco.
