Sacred Spaces and Serene Reflections

Today’s journey was a beautiful blend of spiritual reflection and historical exploration, reinforcing my deep appreciation for Morocco’s cultural tapestry. From the tranquil terraces of Moulay Idriss to the ancient water basins of Meknes, each moment offered a unique perspective on this fascinating land.

The morning began with a simple yet satisfying breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Nassim in Moulay Idriss. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air as I sat down to enjoy the quiet start to my day. It reminded me of mornings back in Potsdam, sharing breakfast with Hans and Leila before the day’s hustle began. Here, the pace was slower, more deliberate, allowing me to savor each moment. After breakfast, I decided to take a stroll through the town, soaking in the atmosphere before the day’s itinerary took full swing. The narrow, winding streets, painted in hues of white and green, exuded a sense of peace and history.

My first official stop was a Small Terrasse (view on the mosque) offering a stunning view of the mosque. The panoramic vista was breathtaking – the green-tiled roofs of the religious complex set against the backdrop of the town’s white buildings and the rolling hills beyond. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of this sacred place, a task I knew was ultimately impossible. No image could truly convey the feeling of serenity that washed over me as I stood there, the call to prayer echoing softly in the distance. As a cultural event coordinator, I am always drawn to places where spirituality and history intertwine, and Moulay Idriss certainly did not disappoint.

Next on the agenda was a visit to the قيسارية مولاي ادريس, the local shopping area. I love exploring local markets, and this one was particularly vibrant. The narrow lanes were filled with stalls selling everything from spices and textiles to traditional clothing and handicrafts. Although I wasn’t necessarily looking to buy anything, I enjoyed the experience of simply wandering through the market, observing the interactions between vendors and customers, and taking in the sights and sounds of daily life. I even picked up a few small souvenirs – a colorful scarf and some fragrant spices – as mementos of my time here. It reminded me of the markets in Bamyan, where the air was always thick with the smells of spices and fresh produce. I often wonder what those markets are like now, so many years later. I hope they still retain some of the vibrancy and life that I remember so fondly.

For lunch, I chose Al Andaloussiya Diyafa, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The setting was charming, with traditional décor and a cozy atmosphere. I ordered a tagine, a classic Moroccan dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the skill of the chef and the quality of the ingredients. As I savored each bite, I reflected on the culinary traditions of Morocco and the importance of food in bringing people together. Food, like culture, is a universal language that transcends borders and connects us all.

In the afternoon, I traveled to Meknes to visit the Bassin Souani صهريج السواني, a massive water basin built in the 17th century. The scale of the structure was impressive, a testament to the engineering prowess of the time. Originally, the basin served as a water source for the city and its gardens, and today it remains a peaceful and picturesque spot. I walked along the water’s edge, admiring the reflections of the sky and the surrounding architecture. The tranquil atmosphere was conducive to contemplation, and I spent some time simply sitting on a bench, lost in thought. I thought of Hans and Leila, and how much they would have enjoyed this place. Leila would have loved the gardens, with their colorful flowers and shady trees. And Hans, ever the engineer, would have been fascinated by the design and construction of the basin. I made a mental note to bring them here someday, to share this experience with them.

As evening approached, I returned to Moulay Idriss for dinner at Haytam. The restaurant was simple but welcoming, and the food was hearty and satisfying. I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan meal, savoring the flavors and reflecting on the day’s adventures. The day ended with a quiet walk through the town, the stars beginning to appear in the night sky. The air was cool and crisp, and the silence was broken only by the occasional sound of footsteps or distant music. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences I had had today, for the opportunity to explore this beautiful and fascinating land.

As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include exploring Zerhoun and Kasabah Senhaji, I am filled with anticipation. The promise of discovering more hidden gems and experiencing the authentic Moroccan lifestyle keeps me energized and excited. I plan to start my day with breakfast at La Colombe Blanche, followed by lunch at SCORPION HOUSE, and dinner at Volubilis, each promising a unique culinary experience. And perhaps, I'll end the day with a relaxing drink at LA TERRASSE, soaking in the evening ambiance of this enchanting region. It is these simple moments of discovery and connection that make travel so rewarding, and I am eager to see what tomorrow brings.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful country, and I look forward to sharing more of my experiences with you. Good night from Moulay Idriss!
