Cultural Immersion in the Moulay Idriss Region
Day 1: Stepping Back in Time: Exploring Ancient Wonders Near Moulay Idriss
Journey through Morocco's historical heartland, exploring Roman ruins and ancient aqueducts near the sacred city of Moulay Idriss.
A Day Among Ruins and Reflections
Today marked the beginning of my solo journey in the Moulay Idriss region, a trip I've been anticipating for months. As a cultural event coordinator, I'm always drawn to places where history whispers from every stone, and today did not disappoint. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and a deep dive into Morocco's rich heritage.
My day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at SCORPION HOUSE. The fresh orange juice was a burst of sunshine, and the traditional Moroccan pastries provided the perfect energy for the day ahead. What made the experience even more special was the location. Perched high on a hillside, the Scorpion House offered a breathtaking panoramic view of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. I could see the entire town, with its whitewashed buildings and green-tiled roofs, spread out beneath me. In the distance, I could even make out the ruins of Volubilis, my next destination.

After breakfast, I set off to explore the Haroune Aqueduct. The aqueduct, with its Roman-esque architectural features, stood proudly against the backdrop of rolling hills. It was built in the early 20th century by Sultan Moulay Abdel Aziz to transport water from the Ain Chanch spring to Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Despite initial assumptions of a Roman origin due to its design, its construction in the 20th century was fascinating. Walking along the trails that crisscrossed the Oued Lkhammane river and passed under the aqueduct’s arches, I observed shepherds guiding their livestock and farmers carrying their produce. It was a scene straight out of a history book, a testament to the enduring traditions of this region. As I stood there, I couldn’t help but think of my family back in Potsdam. Hans would have been fascinated by the engineering, and Leila would have loved watching the animals. I made a mental note to show them pictures and tell them all about it when I got back.

From the aqueduct, I journeyed to the ancient Roman city of Volubilis. The site is located just a short drive from Moulay Idriss, and the transition from the serene countryside to the ancient ruins was seamless. Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was once the capital of the Kingdom of Mauretania and an important outpost of the Roman Empire. As I wandered through the sprawling complex, I felt like I was stepping back in time. The ruins were remarkably well-preserved, and I could easily imagine what life must have been like here centuries ago.

I explored the remains of the basilica, the temple, and the triumphal arch. I marveled at the intricate mosaic floors that adorned the ancient homes. The mosaics depicted scenes from Roman mythology and everyday life, offering a glimpse into the culture and beliefs of the people who once lived here. I learned that Volubilis thrived on olive growing, which led to the construction of many fine town-houses. It was fascinating to see the olive pressing facilities, a testament to the region's agricultural prosperity.
The stones of Volubilis whisper tales of Berber kings, Roman emperors, and Islamic saints, all intertwined in the rich tapestry of Moroccan history.
As I walked through the ruins, I thought about the layers of history that were present here. Volubilis was founded in the 3rd century BC as a Berber settlement before becoming a proto-Carthaginian city. It later flourished under Roman rule and briefly served as the capital of Idris I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty. Each civilization left its mark on the city, creating a unique blend of cultures and traditions.
After immersing myself in the history of Volubilis, I returned to Moulay Idriss for lunch at Restaurant Moulay Idriss. The restaurant offered traditional Moroccan cuisine, and I savored a tagine, a slow-cooked stew with meat, vegetables, and spices. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the culinary traditions of the region. During lunch, I planned my itinerary for tomorrow. I intend to explore Moulay Idriss Downtown and visit the Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er. I also noticed a bar called DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN on the itinerary and thought it might be a good place to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

In the afternoon, I visited The Anou Cooperative, a shop that supports local artisans. As someone passionate about cultural heritage preservation, I was eager to learn more about their work. The Anou Cooperative connects Moroccan artisans directly with consumers, ensuring fair trade practices and empowering local communities. I was particularly impressed by their commitment to transparency and their efforts to help artisans run their own businesses. I purchased a beautiful handmade rug, knowing that my money was going directly to the artisan who created it. It felt good to support such a worthy cause, especially given my background working at the community center back in Potsdam.

For dinner, I decided to try Al Andaloussiya Diyafa, a restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was located in a characteristic Moroccan house, adding to the ambiance. I enjoyed a delicious meal of couscous, a staple of Moroccan cuisine, and mint tea, a symbol of hospitality. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on my experiences. I had journeyed through ancient ruins, explored traditional crafts, and savored the flavors of Moroccan cuisine. But more than that, I had connected with the people and the culture of this region. I had learned about their history, their traditions, and their way of life. And I had come away with a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the Moulay Idriss region. Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into the heart of Moulay Idriss, visiting the Moulay Idriss Downtown and the Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er. I’m also considering visiting the DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN bar in the evening for a relaxing end to the day.
This trip is not just a vacation for me; it's a personal journey of discovery. It's an opportunity to immerse myself in a culture that is both ancient and vibrant, a culture that has shaped the course of history. And as I continue my exploration, I am excited to see what other treasures I will uncover.
