Siwa's Embrace: Heights and Healing Waters

Today was a day of embracing Siwa's natural beauty and immersing myself in its tranquil atmosphere. From climbing ancient mountains to soaking in restorative springs, it was a journey that touched both my body and soul. I started my day with a sense of anticipation, eager to explore more of this unique oasis.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Koshary KARIM. The koshary was absolutely delicious, a perfect blend of lentils, pasta, and rice, topped with a flavorful tomato sauce. It's a popular Egyptian street food, and Karim certainly does it justice, preparing it with love. Fuelled up, I set off to conquer Gabal Dakrur, a mountain with not one, but three peaks, a few kilometers southeast of Siwa Town.

Gabal Dakrur: A Climb Through History

The hike up Gabal Dakrur was invigorating. As I ascended, I was struck by the panoramic views of Siwa Oasis unfolding beneath me. The landscape was dotted with palm groves, salt lakes, and the seemingly endless desert. It was easy to imagine how this vantage point has been valued throughout history. The mountain is riddled with caves and quarries that were used in ancient times. Legend has it that Gabal el-Takrour is linked to King Ibrik, an ancient Siwa King, and his hidden treasuries.

I paused to catch my breath, noticing the fossils embedded in the rocks – remnants of an ancient sea. It's incredible to think that this desert was once underwater. Reaching the summit, I felt a sense of accomplishment, not just physically, but also spiritually. The view was simply breathtaking. The vastness of the Sahara stretching out before me reminded me of the resilience of life and the enduring power of nature. It also made me think of my homeland, Syria, and the strength of its people in the face of adversity. From the top, I could see the German mission house and the dwellings of Al-Dakrur, connecting the past with the present.

Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.

After descending Gabal Dakrur, my stomach started rumbling. It was time for lunch at Fahmi's Garden. This restaurant is known for its fresh, local ingredients and tranquil setting. I savored a delicious meal amidst the lush greenery. Fahmi's Garden is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience. The garden itself is a testament to the ingenuity of the Siwan people, who have cultivated these fertile spaces amidst the harsh desert environment. It reminded me of the small garden I keep in Bonn, a little piece of nature that brings me peace amidst the city.

Fitnas Spring: An Oasis of Tranquility

In the late afternoon, I made my way to Fitnas Spring, also known as Fantasy Island. This secluded pool is located on a small island in the salty Birket Siwa. The setting was idyllic, surrounded by palm trees and lush greenery. The air was still and the only sound was the gentle rustling of leaves and the soft lapping of water against the shore.

I dipped my toes into the water, finding it refreshingly cool. As I swam, I felt the stress of the day melt away. The spring is surrounded by a variety of trees, including banana, olive, and date palms. It felt like a true oasis, a hidden paradise where I could escape the world and reconnect with myself. I stayed until sunset, watching the sky transform into a canvas of vibrant colors. The reflection of the sky on the water was mesmerizing, creating a sense of peace and tranquility that I will carry with me long after I leave Siwa. It was a beautiful way to end the day, surrounded by the serene beauty of Fitnas Spring.

For dinner, I decided to try Cafour House Siwa, drawn by its reputation for offering a taste of local life. Located near Dakrur Mountain and the salt lakes, it seemed like the perfect spot to reflect on my day. The restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere, and I enjoyed a delicious meal of African cuisine. It was the perfect end to a day filled with exploration and tranquility. Cafour House is known for its unique accommodations, including tropical huts and traditional Siwi rooms. It's a place where you can truly experience the simplicity of life. I chatted with some of the locals, learning more about their culture and traditions. They were warm and welcoming, eager to share their stories with me. I felt a sense of connection, a reminder that despite our different backgrounds, we are all part of the same human family.

As the evening drew to a close, I found myself at Camp Another Planet, a bar south of Siwa. Sipping on a refreshing drink, I watched the stars begin to pepper the night sky. The camp is known for its jeep safaris through the stunning dunes. I met Uncle Karam and his son Abdullah, who made me feel right at home. We shared stories and laughter, creating memories that I will cherish forever. The desert night was magical, the silence broken only by the crackling of the bonfire and the gentle strumming of a guitar. It was a perfect end to a day filled with exploration and connection.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Cleopatra Spring and Meditation Oasis, continuing my journey of discovery and reflection. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at the Sahara ADVENTURE SHOP. Each day in Siwa reveals a new facet of its beauty, and I am eager to see what tomorrow brings.

As I drifted off to sleep, I felt grateful for the experiences of the day. Siwa had embraced me with its natural beauty and warm hospitality. It was a reminder that even in the most remote corners of the world, there is beauty to be found and connections to be made. I am eager to continue my adventure, exploring more of this enchanting oasis and sharing my experiences with you.

Siwa, with its blend of history, nature, and culture, continues to be a source of inspiration and reflection. It is a place that resonates deeply with my own journey, reminding me of the importance of resilience, connection, and the enduring power of hope. This journey is more than just a travel experience; it is a pilgrimage to a place that nourishes the soul and reminds us of the beauty that exists even in the most challenging of circumstances. And as I continue my travels, I carry with me the spirit of Siwa, a beacon of hope and a reminder of the enduring strength of the human spirit.
