Solo Cultural Journey to the Enchanting Siwa Oasis
Day 5: Desert Springs and Siwan Crafts: A Day of Rejuvenation and Tradition
Explore Siwa's therapeutic hot springs and unique handicrafts, immersing yourself in the oasis's natural beauty and cultural richness.
Oasis Immersion
Today was a day dedicated to embracing the natural and cultural treasures of Siwa Oasis. From the therapeutic waters of Bir Wahed to the intricate artistry of local handicrafts, every moment felt like a deeper connection to this unique corner of the world. It's days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo journey in the first place – to discover the hidden gems and authentic experiences that lie beyond the usual tourist trails.
Experience the magic of Bir Wahed: a natural hot spring in the Sahara Desert offering relaxation and stunning sunset views.
The day began with a delightful breakfast at New Star Siwa. The hotel offered a variety of options, including African, Dutch, and American cuisines, but I opted for the local vegetarian selection, eager to start the day with a taste of Siwa. The comfortable accommodations and garden views added to the pleasant start, making me feel refreshed and ready for the day’s adventures.
Our first destination was Bir Wahed, a sulphuric hot spring located about 15 kilometers from Siwa on the edge of the Great Sand Sea. The journey itself was an adventure, requiring a 4x4 to traverse the undulating dunes. As we crested each dune, the landscape unfolded in a breathtaking panorama of golden sand stretching to the horizon. The air was crisp, with a slight chill that December brings to the desert.
Finally, we arrived at Bir Wahed, a natural jacuzzi where sulphurous water bubbled up, its warmth a stark contrast to the surrounding air. The spring's water, rich in minerals, is known for its therapeutic benefits, offering relief for skin conditions and rheumatic ailments. I couldn't resist immersing myself in the soothing waters, feeling the tension melt away from my muscles. The experience was surreal – relaxing in a hot spring while gazing at the vast expanse of the desert.
Nearby, a freshwater lake offered a refreshing contrast to the hot spring. I took a quick dip in the cool water, invigorating my senses before returning to the warmth of the sulphuric pool. The contrast was exhilarating, a dance between fire and ice in the heart of the desert.
As the sun began its descent, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. Watching the sunset while soaking in the hot spring was an unforgettable experience, the silence broken only by the gentle lapping of water and the distant call of a desert bird. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the simple joys in life. I felt grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Bonn.
The desert is a place of extremes, where the harshness of the environment is matched only by the beauty of its landscapes and the resilience of its people.
Leaving Bir Wahed, we headed back towards Siwa, the stars beginning to pepper the darkening sky. The vastness of the desert sky was breathtaking, a humbling reminder of our place in the universe.
For lunch, we stopped at El Salam restaurant, a local favorite known for its authentic Egyptian flavors. I decided to try the local specialty, a tagine cooked with dates and olives, a testament to Siwa's agricultural bounty. The tagine was rich and flavorful, a perfect blend of sweet and savory that warmed me from the inside out. The restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with some locals, learning more about their traditions and way of life.

In the afternoon, I dedicated my time to exploring Siwa's traditional handcrafts. Siwa is renowned for its unique artistry, passed down through generations of Berber women. I visited a local shop, where I was immediately captivated by the intricate designs and vibrant colors of the embroidered dresses and scarves.

The embroidery of Siwa is a distinctive art form, using a range of stitches and techniques unique to the oasis. The traditional colors – black, dark green, orange, red, and yellow – are said to represent the colors of ripening dates, the oasis's main cash crop. Each piece tells a story, with symbols and motifs reflecting the daily life and beliefs of the Siwan people. I learned that the embroidery is often done on dresses, scarves, and pillow covers, with two main styles: Souk Siwa, featuring colorful patterns, and Souk Es Sadaqa, using only black thread.
I was particularly drawn to the hand-woven baskets and mats, made from palm leaves using traditional weaving techniques. These items are not only beautiful but also functional, showcasing the resourcefulness and skill of the local artisans. I purchased a small basket as a memento, a tangible reminder of the artistry and culture of Siwa. I remembered Aisha's fascination with learning how things are made, and I knew she'd appreciate the craftsmanship of this basket.
I also learned about the Veiled Weavers Society, an initiative that trains local Berber and Bedouin women in the traditional craft of weaving rugs, providing them with a salary and commission. It's heartening to see these traditions being preserved and empowering women in the community.
Before dinner, I took a stroll through the Siwa Nature Reserve, a protected area encompassing a vast expanse of desert, lakes, and diverse ecosystems. The reserve is home to over 40 species of plants and 28 species of wild mammals, as well as numerous birds and reptiles. Although I didn't spot any rare mammals, I enjoyed the tranquility of the landscape, the silence broken only by the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Taziry Ecovillages for dinner. This unique eco-lodge offers a dining experience that is both sustainable and delicious, with farm-to-table dishes prepared using organic, locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant serves North African and Siwan cuisine, claimed by many guests to be among the best in Egypt. I opted for a traditional Siwan dish, cooked with organic vegetables and herbs grown on the premises. The meal was a culinary delight, a testament to the freshness and quality of the ingredients. The ambiance was equally enchanting, with candlelit tables and breathtaking desert views. The lack of electricity added to the charm, creating a serene and intimate atmosphere.

After dinner, I sat outside, gazing at the stars. The sky in Siwa is incredibly clear, offering a unique opportunity to observe the planets and constellations. I felt a sense of peace and connection to the universe, a feeling that is hard to come by in the busy streets of Bonn.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Gabal Dakrur and Fitnas Spring, continuing my exploration of Siwa's natural and historical wonders. I am also looking forward to experiencing the local nightlife at Camp Another Planet, a bar that promises a unique Siwan experience.
As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this remarkable oasis. Siwa is a place of contrasts, where the harshness of the desert is juxtaposed with the lushness of the oasis, where ancient traditions meet modern life, and where the beauty of nature is celebrated in every aspect of daily life. It is a place that nourishes the soul and inspires the spirit, a place that I will carry with me long after I leave its sandy shores.
The weather forecast for the coming days looks promising, with clear skies and temperatures hovering around 77°F during the day and 52°F at night. I am looking forward to more adventures, more discoveries, and more moments of connection with this enchanting place.
