Whispers of Siwa's Waters

Today was a day of embracing the simple joys and ancient echoes of Siwa. It's funny how sometimes the most profound experiences come from the most unassuming places. I found myself reflecting on the journey that brought me here, a Syrian woman finding solace and connection in the heart of the Egyptian desert.

The day began with a delightful breakfast at Teneré. The flavors were simple, yet so authentic, reminding me of the traditional breakfasts back home in Al-Suqaylabiyah. The warm hospitality of the staff made me feel instantly welcome, a sentiment that seems to permeate every corner of Siwa. I enjoyed some local dishes, fueling up for the day’s adventures. It’s these small moments, these shared meals, that truly connect us, no matter where we come from. I made sure to have a hearty meal, knowing that I would need the energy for the day ahead.

My first stop was Cleopatra's Pool. The name itself conjures images of ancient royalty and timeless beauty. While the legend of Cleopatra bathing here may be more romantic than factual, the pool holds a certain magic. The water was wonderfully refreshing, a welcome contrast to the desert air. I took a dip, letting the mineral-rich water soothe my muscles and calm my mind. It was a popular spot, with both locals and tourists enjoying the water. Despite the crowd, there was a sense of peace, a shared appreciation for this natural oasis. I took a moment to close my eyes, imagining what it must have been like to live in this oasis centuries ago.

The desert has a way of stripping away the unnecessary, leaving you with only what truly matters: connection, reflection, and the simple beauty of existence.

After my swim, I explored the area around the pool. There were small cafes offering refreshments and traditional Siwan drinks. I decided to try a Siwa juice at Yousuf Juices, a local favorite known for its fresh blends. The combination of dates, banana, and milk was surprisingly delicious and energizing. Siwa juice seems to be a local favorite. I sat and savored the drink, watching the people come and go, each with their own story to tell. It was a perfect moment of cultural immersion, a chance to simply observe and appreciate the rhythm of Siwan life.

For lunch, I headed to Abdu Resturant, recommended by a local I met at Cleopatra's Pool. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and served traditional Egyptian cuisine. I ordered a tagine, a slow-cooked stew that was bursting with flavor. It was a hearty and satisfying meal, a true taste of Siwa. I enjoyed the experience of trying authentic Egyptian dishes.

In the afternoon, I decided to simply wander through the Siwa Oasis. The oasis itself is a marvel, a lush green landscape amidst the arid desert. I walked along the dusty paths, admiring the palm trees and the traditional mud-brick buildings. The air was filled with the sounds of daily life – children playing, farmers tending to their fields, and the gentle breeze rustling through the palm leaves. I felt a sense of serenity, a feeling of being far removed from the chaos of modern life. It reminded me of the simple, close-knit communities of my homeland.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to OLA restaurant مطعم عُلا for dinner. This restaurant offered a delightful blend of Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, providing a welcome change from the traditional Egyptian fare. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the food was simply divine. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the experiences of the day. The staff was attentive and friendly, making the dining experience even more enjoyable.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Siwa reminded me of Syria. The warmth of the people, the emphasis on community, and the deep connection to the land – these were all qualities that resonated with my own heritage. Perhaps that's why I felt so at home here, so at peace. It's a reminder that no matter where we go, we carry our roots with us, shaping our experiences and connecting us to the world in profound ways.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Gebel al-Mawta and Fitnas Island. I am looking forward to discovering more of Siwa's ancient history and natural beauty, and I am particularly excited to see the sunset from Fitnas Island. I've heard it's a truly magical experience.

As I settle in for the night, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Siwa has already exceeded my expectations, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a place that nourishes the soul, reminding us of the importance of connection, reflection, and the simple joys of life.

I am so grateful for this journey, for the opportunity to connect with a place that feels both familiar and new. Until tomorrow, ma'asala from Siwa.
