Whispers of the Past, Echoes of the Present

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time and tranquility here in Siwa. From the solemn silence of ancient tombs to the vibrant hues of a desert sunset, Siwa continues to captivate me with its unique blend of history and natural beauty. It's a place where the past whispers secrets in the wind, and the present unfolds in moments of serene contemplation.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Valley of the Kings Restaurant. Fuelled by traditional Egyptian fare, I set out to explore Gebel al-Mawta, the Mountain of the Dead. The name itself sends shivers down your spine, doesn't it? But as I approached the small hill, located just north of Siwa Town, I felt more intrigued than afraid.

Gebel al-Mawta is honeycombed with rock tombs, a silent city of the departed dating back to the 26th Dynasty, Ptolemaic, and Roman times. As I climbed the hill, I imagined the Siwans of old seeking refuge here during the Italian bombings of World War II. It's a powerful reminder that even in the most serene of places, history leaves its mark. The tombs cover every inch of its base and are situated on its terraces and on all sides of the conical part. Local residents also call it Gebel Al Musabbarin, meaning Mountain of the Embalmed.

Inside the tombs, the walls are adorned with paintings and hieroglyphs, telling stories of lives lived and beliefs held. The Tomb of Si Amun is particularly breathtaking, with its beautifully colored reliefs depicting the deceased making offerings to Egyptian gods. It's believed that Si Amun was a wealthy Greek landowner or merchant. Imagine that, a Greek in Siwa, so long ago! The Tomb of the Crocodile, named for its painting of the crocodile god Sobek, was also fascinating, though sadly, many of its paintings are deteriorating.

Exploring Gebel al-Mawta felt like stepping back in time, a privilege to witness the artistry and beliefs of those who came before us. It was quiet and peaceful, a fitting resting place. I could not help but reflect on my own journey, my own heritage. As someone who had to leave her birthplace, I wondered what stories these people would have told me, if they could.

The desert tells a different story every time one ventures into it.

After immersing myself in the past, I decided to embrace the present with a light lunch at Slow café & Cake. I savored a delightful pastry and a cup of coffee, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the café. It was a perfect interlude before my next adventure. I then headed to Tiltawein jewlery and handicrafts Store for some shopping. I wanted to find something to bring back home, a reminder of this magical place. I found a beautiful silver pendant with intricate Berber designs, a piece that seemed to capture the spirit of Siwa. It reminded me of the jewelry back home in Syria, and I knew my daughter Aisha would love it.

As the afternoon waned, I made my way to Fitnas Island, also known as Fantasy Island, eager to witness the famous Siwa sunset. Located about 5km southwest of Siwa Oasis, the journey there was an adventure in itself, navigating the bumpy dirt roads by tuk-tuk. The island is a small oasis in the salty Birket Siwa (Siwa Lake), accessible via a narrow causeway.

As I arrived, I was greeted by a scene of serene beauty. Palm trees swayed gently in the breeze, their reflections shimmering in the tranquil waters. A small café offered refreshments and a place to relax. I found a quiet spot and simply sat, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The sun began its descent, painting the sky with vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple. The salty waters of the lake mirrored the sky, creating a breathtaking panorama. It was a moment of pure magic, a reminder of the simple beauty that exists in the world. The island is surrounded by the strikingly clear, salty waters of Lake Siwa. The contrast between the vibrant, turquoise waters and the arid desert landscape is mesmerizing, offering visitors a peaceful retreat from the surrounding vastness of the Sahara Desert. The lake's still waters reflect the sky and the lush palms, creating a picture-perfect scene that feels like stepping into another world.

I thought of Klaus and the children, wishing they could be here to share this moment with me. But in a way, they were. I carried them in my heart, their love and support fueling my journey. As the last rays of sun disappeared below the horizon, I felt a sense of gratitude for this day, for this place, for this life.

For dinner, I decided to try Bedouin - Roof Restaurant, drawn in by the promise of traditional Bedouin cuisine and a rooftop view. The restaurant did not disappoint. I savored a delicious tagine, infused with local flavors and spices, while enjoying the cool evening breeze. The view of Siwa under the stars was magical, a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Salt Lakes and visit the Anima art therapy & culture center. I am also looking forward to a relaxing evening at Fahmi's Garden. But for now, I will rest and dream of ancient tombs and desert sunsets, grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Siwa. Siwa is an 80-km depression, shaped like a pennant. Vale notes that Siwa has had colourful and distinctive crafts, including pottery, baskets, silver jewellery, and embroidery which were traditionally produced for Siwan's own use. I also wanted to taste and purchase the famous Siwan dates and olive oil, known for their exceptional quality. It's not just about seeing the sights—it's about experiencing the soul of an oasis where history and tradition still thrive. I feel like I am connecting with the oasis on a deeper level.

I am discovering that Siwa is more than just a destination; it's an experience that nourishes the soul, a place where the past and present intertwine to create something truly magical. It is a place I will never forget, a place that will forever hold a special place in my heart. I am so grateful for this journey, for the opportunity to explore my heritage and connect with the beauty of this world. I know that when I return home to Bonn, I will carry the spirit of Siwa with me, a reminder of the importance of history, culture, and the simple joys of life.

I am reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta:

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

And I know that I will be telling stories of Siwa for years to come.

The shopping scene in Siwa Oasis offers a unique and authentic experience for visitors. From browsing through the traditional handicrafts made by local artisans, to exploring the bustling markets filled with spices, textiles, and souvenirs, there is something for everyone. Visitors can expect to find intricately designed silver jewelry, colorful handmade pottery, and beautifully woven rugs that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the region. Don't miss the opportunity to taste and purchase the famous Siwan dates and olive oil, known for their exceptional quality.
