Salt, Art, and Siwan Charms
Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of natural wonders and artistic expression that truly captured the essence of Siwa. It's amazing how this oasis continues to surprise me with its unique offerings. It felt like a day dedicated to rejuvenation, both for the body and the soul.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Ana Maria cafe & restaurante. The vibrant atmosphere and the fusion of Brazilian flavors in the heart of Siwa was a surprising and welcome start. It's fascinating to find such international influences in this remote oasis. I enjoyed a hearty meal, fueling up for the day’s adventures ahead. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making me feel right at home. I even tried their signature feijoada, a hearty black bean stew, which was absolutely delicious.
Next on the agenda were the famed Salt Lakes of Siwa. As someone who appreciates the healing power of nature, I was particularly excited about this experience. The drive there was an adventure in itself, passing through the stunning desert landscape. The first glimpse of the lakes was breathtaking – crystal clear turquoise waters shimmering under the December sun. The contrast between the water and the surrounding golden sands was mesmerizing.

As I eased into the water, the high salinity immediately made me buoyant. Floating effortlessly, I felt an incredible sense of relaxation. It's true what they say – it’s like floating in the Dead Sea. The experience was both surreal and therapeutic. I could feel the salt working its magic on my skin, leaving it feeling refreshed and revitalized. I even took the opportunity to cover myself in the mineral-rich mud, hoping to reap some of its purported healing benefits.

After a couple of hours of soaking up the sun and the salty goodness, it was time for lunch. I headed to Muhra, a restaurant known for its authentic Egyptian cuisine. The rustic decor and the warm ambiance made it a perfect spot to unwind. I savored traditional dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a true taste of Siwa. I tried a hearty stew and a refreshing salad, both bursting with local spices and herbs. The staff were incredibly friendly, offering recommendations and sharing insights about the local culture. It felt like more than just a meal; it was an immersion into the heart of Siwan hospitality.

I was particularly drawn to the vibrant paintings and intricate handicrafts that reflected the unique heritage of Siwa.

I spent a couple of hours wandering through the exhibits, admiring the talent and the passion of the artists. It was a surprisingly cathartic experience, allowing me to connect with my inner self in a new way. I also learned about the center's efforts to preserve and promote Siwan culture through art. It was inspiring to see how art could be used as a tool for community building and cultural preservation.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to Al Bab Inshal Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant's charming atmosphere, with its salt lamps and earthen walls, created a cozy and inviting space. I enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled chicken and traditional Siwan dishes. The flavors were authentic and comforting, a perfect end to a day of exploration. The service was prompt and attentive, making me feel like a valued guest.
