A Day of Artistic Immersion

Today was a sensory feast, a deep dive into the heart of Naoshima's artistic soul. From quirky bathhouses to serene shrines and captivating galleries, the island unfolded in layers, each more intriguing than the last. It was a day of unexpected discoveries and quiet contemplation, a reminder of why I embarked on this solo journey in the first place.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Terrace Restaurant. Located within the Benesse Art Site, the restaurant offered a picturesque view of the beach. Although owned by an English family, it was staffed by Japanese locals. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast, a delightful assortment of small dishes that energized me for the day ahead. The serene atmosphere and the gentle sea breeze made it a perfect start.

First up was the Naoshima Public Bath "I Love Yu". This wasn't just any bathhouse; it was an art installation in itself! Created by Shinro Ohtake, the exterior was a riot of colors and textures, a 3D scrapbook of Showa-era kitsch.

Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the contrast. The layout was that of a traditional sento, a public bathhouse, but with an artistic twist. Captivating mosaics, vibrant murals, and even a life-size elephant sculpture between the male and female bathing areas made it unlike any bathhouse I’ve ever seen. I deposited my shoes in a locker and proceeded to the changing room. It was such a unique experience to unwind and relax after exploring the island's art attractions. The water was artificially warmed, providing a soothing experience. It was the perfect way to start the day, feeling refreshed and invigorated. I can't say I've ever had a bath quite like it!

Art isn't just something you look at; it's something you experience, something that washes over you and leaves you changed.

Next, I headed to the Art House Project: Go'o Shrine. This was a completely different experience, a serene and contemplative space that blended traditional shrine architecture with contemporary art. As part of Naoshima's Art House Project, Go'o Shrine is a space where traditional shrine architecture and contemporary art come together.

Designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto, the shrine featured a glass staircase connecting an underground stone chamber to the shrine above, uniting two worlds. The interplay of light and space was mesmerizing, creating a sense of peace and tranquility. I found myself lost in thought, contemplating the connection between the earthly and spiritual realms. It was a truly moving experience, a reminder of the power of art to transcend boundaries and connect us to something larger than ourselves.

For lunch, I ventured to Raumen Tsumu, a local ramen shop. This cozy eatery is known for its authentic ramen dishes and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is located a 20-minute walk from the Honmura area. I savored every bite of the rich, flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, a taste of authentic Japan. I even saw they have vegan options available !

After lunch, I visited the Miyanoura Gallery 6. Housed in a renovated pachinko parlor, the gallery was an intriguing blend of old and new. Architect Taira Nishizawa transformed the pachinko parlor into a gallery space. Since 2019, it has been the site of an ongoing project by artist Motoyuki Shitamichi called Setouchi Archive. The exhibits document various aspects of the region's history, such as tourism, industry, and local photographers. The gallery aims to harmonize with the landscape, offering an intimate setting to appreciate a variety of artistic expressions. As I wandered through the gallery, I appreciated how the installations interacted with the natural light and surroundings, creating a unique viewing experience.

Before dinner, I stopped by Mikazukishoten, a local shop, and picked up a few postcards to send to Lina and Jihad. I know they would have loved to see the bathhouse!

For dinner, I chose Ebisukamo, a cozy izakaya (Japanese pub) in Honmura. The restaurant has a good old Japanese style interior. The menu was extensive, featuring mostly seafood-based dishes. The owner is known for going above and beyond for customers. I opted for a selection of small plates, each bursting with flavor and freshness. The sake menu was great, and the wait staff recommended pairings. It was the perfect way to end a day of artistic exploration, savoring the flavors of Naoshima in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere.

As I walked back to My Lodge Naoshima, the island was bathed in the soft glow of the evening light. The day had been a whirlwind of art, culture, and culinary delights, a testament to Naoshima's unique charm. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this special place, to immerse myself in its beauty and serenity. It was a day I would never forget.
