A Day of Art and Island Exploration

Another day, another adventure on Naoshima! Today was all about diving deeper into the island's art scene and experiencing more of its unique charm. As someone who appreciates the way art can transform a place, I was eager to see what today would bring. It's amazing how much this island, reminiscent of the small villages back in Zahlé, Lebanon, has to offer.

My day started with a delightful breakfast at Café Ippo in Honmura. This charming spot is known for its homemade dishes and cozy atmosphere. I opted for their breakfast set, which included a selection of local vegetables and freshly baked bread. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. What a great way to start the day, and I made sure to take some pictures to share back home with Jihad and Lina.

Lee Ufan Museum: A Minimalist's Dream

After breakfast, I headed to the Lee Ufan Museum. Designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, the museum is a serene space that perfectly complements Lee Ufan's minimalist art. The museum is nestled in a quiet valley, creating a tranquil atmosphere that encourages contemplation. The combination of Ando's architecture and Ufan's art creates a truly immersive experience.

The outdoor sculptures were particularly striking, blending seamlessly with the natural landscape. Inside, the museum featured a collection of paintings and sculptures that emphasized simplicity and space. I found myself drawn to the repeated brushstrokes in his paintings, which had a calming and meditative quality. Although some reviews online mention that the museum is small, I found it to be a worthwhile visit, offering a moment of peace and reflection.

Art is not about things you see; it is about the gap between them.

Art House Project: Kadoya – Where Art Meets History

Next on my list was the Art House Project, specifically Kadoya. This project transforms abandoned houses in the Honmura district into unique art installations. Kadoya was the first house to be completed as part of the Art House Project, and it offers a fascinating blend of traditional architecture and contemporary art. The house itself is about 200 years old and has been carefully restored.

Inside Kadoya, I was captivated by the Sea of Time '98 installation by Tatsuo Miyajima. This work features LED displays set in a pool of water, creating a mesmerizing play of light and reflection. The way the art incorporated the history and memories of the house was truly remarkable. Wandering through the Honmura district to find the Art Houses was an experience in itself, offering glimpses into the daily life of the island's residents.

Chasing the Yellow Pumpkin

No trip to Naoshima is complete without seeing Yayoi Kusama's Yellow Pumpkin. So, after immersing myself in the Art House Project, I made my way to the iconic sculpture. As I approached the pumpkin, its vibrant yellow color stood out against the backdrop of the sea and sky. The contrast was striking, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of joy and wonder.

The Yellow Pumpkin has become a symbol of Naoshima, and it's easy to see why. Its playful design and unique setting make it a must-see for any visitor. I spent some time taking photos and simply enjoying the view. It's amazing how a single piece of art can transform a landscape and capture the spirit of a place.

A Culinary Journey: Local Flavors of Naoshima

For lunch, I decided to try Little Plum, a cozy café in Miyanoura. This café is known for its relaxed atmosphere and delicious food. I ordered their house special dry curry, which was flavorful and satisfying. The staff were friendly and the reggae music added to the laid-back vibe. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge after a morning of art exploration. I made a mental note to tell Jihad about this place; he would love the chill atmosphere.

As evening approached, I made my way to Okonomiyaki Umikko for dinner. This family-run restaurant is a local favorite, known for its delicious okonomiyaki. I ordered the Umikko Special, which was packed with a variety of ingredients and cooked to perfection. The owners were incredibly welcoming, and the English menu made it easy to choose from the many options. The restaurant had a cozy and intimate setting, making it a great place to experience authentic Japanese cuisine.

Bar SARU: A Nightcap in Miyanoura

To end the day, I ventured to Bar SARU in Miyanoura. This small bar is known for being one of the few places on the island that stays open late. The atmosphere was intimate and welcoming, with a mix of locals and tourists. I ordered a Naoshima beer and chatted with some fellow travelers. The bar had a cool, laid-back vibe, and it was the perfect way to unwind after a day of art and exploration. I could imagine bringing Jihad here for a quiet drink, discussing the day's adventures.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Naoshima has to offer. From its world-class art museums to its charming local restaurants, the island is a feast for the senses. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, where I plan to visit the Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu, the Art House Project: Go'o Shrine, and the Miyanoura Gallery 6. I'm also excited to check out Mikazukishoten, a local shop. Each day here brings new discoveries, and I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique island. It’s a place that inspires creativity and offers a sense of peace, something I will carry with me long after I leave.
