Solo Artistic Retreat on Naoshima Island
Day 12: Farewell to Naoshima: Reflecting on Art, Nature, and Tranquility
Saying goodbye to Naoshima Island after 12 days of art, scenic beauty, and serene moments. A final day of reflection and local flavors.
A Lasting Impression
As my journey on Naoshima Island draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible blend of art, nature, and tranquility that has defined my experience here. These past twelve days have been a soothing balm to my soul, a chance to escape the hectic pace of Toronto and immerse myself in a world where creativity thrives in harmony with the environment. It's hard to believe it's time to leave, but the memories and inspirations I've gathered will undoubtedly accompany me home.
My final day began with a comforting breakfast at Yayoda. The restaurant offered exquisite Japanese cuisine with fresh local ingredients. I savored every bite of the traditional Japanese fare, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic flavors. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration and reflection.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to visit the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower. The tower offered breathtaking views of Shodoshima Island and the Seto Inland Sea. The panoramic vista was a perfect way to appreciate the island's natural beauty one last time. I took my time at the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower, capturing photos and simply breathing in the fresh sea air. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to etch the landscape into my memory.

Next on my itinerary was Tsunosaki, a serene scenic spot known for its stunning coastal vistas and tranquil atmosphere. I wandered along the coastal paths, listening to the gentle sounds of waves lapping against the shore. The artistic spirit of Naoshima was palpable here, with various installations and sculptures dotting the landscape. It was a peaceful haven where I could unwind and appreciate the harmony of art and nature. As someone who enjoys photography, I found Tsunosaki to be especially inspiring, with the play of light on the water creating magical moments.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
For lunch, I decided to try Okonomiyaki Umikko. This restaurant is renowned for its savory okonomiyaki, a type of Japanese pancake filled with an array of ingredients. I customized my okonomiyaki with various toppings, savoring the essence of Japanese comfort food. The warm and welcoming atmosphere of the restaurant made it an ideal stop for a solo traveler like myself. The limited hours of the restaurant created a cozy and intimate setting. I took my time enjoying the meal, reflecting on my journey and the many wonderful experiences I had had on the island.
In the late afternoon, I chose to have dinner at EAT LOCAL 直島食堂 (NAOSHIMA SHOKUDO). The restaurant offers authentic Japanese cuisine. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey on the island. I savored the flavors of the local ingredients, feeling a sense of connection to the community and the land.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to Kon'nichiwa, a charming bar known for its inviting atmosphere and local beverages. I decided to try a local Naoshima beer, a unique brew that captured the essence of the island. It was a relaxing way to unwind and soak in the last moments of my Naoshima adventure. The friendly staff and the cozy ambiance made me feel right at home.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima for my final night, I took a leisurely stroll through Miyanoura Port. The port was adorned with art installations and sculptures, creating a magical atmosphere. I paused to admire Yayoi Kusama's iconic red pumpkin, a symbol of Naoshima. The vibrant color and whimsical design brought a smile to my face.

As I walked, I thought about how much this island has transformed me. It reminded me of Zahlé, my hometown in Lebanon, a place also known for its beauty and tranquility. Just as Zahlé holds a special place in my heart, Naoshima will forever be etched in my memory as a sanctuary of art and serenity. The experience has reignited my passion for photography and inspired me to seek out more opportunities to connect with nature and culture. Maybe Jihad and Lina would love to experience this island one day. I will certainly bring them here.
Naoshima has shown me the power of art to transform not only spaces but also lives. It has reinforced the importance of slowing down, appreciating the beauty around us, and finding inspiration in unexpected places. As I prepare to return to Toronto, I carry with me a renewed sense of creativity and a deep appreciation for the harmonious blend of art, nature, and community that makes Naoshima so special.
Tomorrow, I will be heading to the airport to begin my journey back to Toronto. It’s always a bittersweet moment, leaving a place that has captured my heart, but I know that the memories and lessons I’ve gained will stay with me forever. Until next time, Naoshima, thank you for the art, the beauty, and the tranquility. It’s been an unforgettable journey.
