Finding Peace in the Simple Things
Today was a day dedicated to slowing down and savoring the simple pleasures that Naoshima has to offer. After days of exploring the vibrant art scene, I decided to take a step back and immerse myself in the island's quieter corners. It was a day of tea, reflection, and a touch of spiritual exploration, reminding me that sometimes the most profound experiences come from the most unassuming moments.
My day began, as most days here do, with a delightful breakfast at Ishii Shouten. The familiar comfort of a traditional Japanese breakfast set the perfect tone for a day of introspection. I savored every bite, appreciating the simplicity and the care that goes into each dish. It's funny how food can be such a grounding force, no matter where you are in the world. It reminded me of mornings back in Toronto, enjoying a quick bite before Lina heads off to school and Jihad starts his workday. Though I miss them dearly, I find solace in these small, mindful moments.
With a full stomach and a peaceful heart, I set off to find the hidden gem that is the Kasaneiwa. The journey there was an adventure in itself. The path was a bit challenging, involving a climb up a long stairway and a narrow mountain road. The August heat was definitely testing my resolve, and I was grateful I remembered to pack a bottle of water this time, unlike the sunscreen and portable charger I forgot at home before leaving Toronto! As I ascended, the scenery of the Seto Inland Sea unfolded before me, rewarding my efforts with breathtaking views.
Finally, I reached Kasaneiwa, and I was immediately struck by the mysterious sense of balance the stones maintained. It felt like a Japanese version of the Golden Rock in Myanmar, as if defying gravity itself. The rocks are stacked together in such a way that it's hard to believe it's a natural formation. There's an air of spirituality surrounding the place, a sense of ancient wonder that resonated deeply within me. I spent some time there, simply absorbing the tranquility and pondering the mysteries of the universe.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences come from slowing down and appreciating the beauty of the present moment.
After my spiritual sojourn, I decided to treat myself to a delightful lunch at Tee's DELI GROCERY. It was the perfect spot to relax and refuel after my climb. I enjoyed a light and refreshing meal, savoring the local flavors and the laid-back atmosphere. It was a far cry from the hustle and bustle of Toronto, and I found myself completely content in the simplicity of the moment.
With my energy restored, I ventured to find the 'Drink a Cup of Tea' attraction. Tucked away in a scenic spot, it was a serene oasis that blended perfectly with Naoshima's art scene. The tea house itself was a work of art, and the selection of teas was exquisite. I savored each sip, enjoying the stunning views and artistic installations that surrounded me. It was a truly unique experience, a moment of pure bliss that I'll cherish forever.

It reminded me of Hiroshi Sugimoto's 'Mondrian' glass teahouse, which has found its permanent home on Naoshima as well. These spaces aren't just about the tea; they're about the experience, the atmosphere, and the connection to art and nature. The blend of modern architecture with traditional Japanese aesthetics is simply mesmerizing.
Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I made a stop at Naoshima Shop Umihotaru. I wanted to find a small souvenir to bring back home to Lina and Jihad, a little piece of Naoshima to share with them. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bell, its gentle chime a reminder of the peaceful moments I've experienced here. I imagined Lina's eyes lighting up at the sight of it, and Jihad appreciating the craftsmanship.

For dinner, I decided to try Yuunagi, a local restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. The meal was a culinary delight, a symphony of flavors that danced on my palate. I tried a variety of dishes, each one a testament to the skill and artistry of the chef. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day, a celebration of the senses that left me feeling completely satisfied.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the profound sense of peace that has washed over me. Naoshima has a way of stripping away the excess and revealing the beauty of the present moment. It's a place where art and nature intertwine, where spirituality and simplicity coexist, and where the soul can find solace in the most unexpected places.
Tomorrow marks the last day of my solo artistic retreat on Naoshima Island, and I plan to make the most of it. The itinerary includes visits to the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower and Tsunosaki, promising more breathtaking views and natural beauty. I'm also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Yayoda for breakfast, Okonomiyaki Umikko for lunch, and EAT LOCAL 直島食堂 for dinner. And perhaps, I'll end the day with a drink at Kon'nichiwa, soaking in the last moments of this incredible journey before flying back home to my family in Toronto.
I'm already anticipating the warm embrace of my family and sharing stories of my adventure over a home-cooked Lebanese meal. While I'm eager to return to my familiar life, I know that a piece of Naoshima will forever remain with me, a reminder to seek beauty in simplicity and to find peace in the present moment.
