Exploring the Cultural Wonders of Kyoto with Family
Day 4: A Royal Day in Kyoto: Palaces, Gardens, and Culinary Delights
Explore Kyoto's imperial history, serene gardens, and exquisite cuisine, from palaces to hidden bars, in a day of cultural immersion.
Kyoto's Imperial Grandeur
Today was a day of regal exploration here in Kyoto. I've always been fascinated by the intersection of history and culture, and Kyoto, with its imperial past, offers a unique opportunity to delve into Japan's rich heritage. I was particularly excited to share this with my family, hoping to create memories that would last a lifetime. From the serene gardens to the architectural marvels, today was a deep dive into the heart of Kyoto.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Komefuku. I had read about their traditional Japanese breakfast sets, and it seemed like the perfect way to fuel up for a day of sightseeing. The restaurant was cozy, with a welcoming atmosphere that made us feel right at home. I opted for the classic set, which included grilled fish, miso soup, and an assortment of small, flavorful dishes. Lena, ever the adventurous one, tried the tamagoyaki, a sweet rolled omelet, and declared it delicious. It was a great start to the day, setting the tone for the cultural immersion that lay ahead.
First on our itinerary was the Kyoto Imperial Palace. As a Cypriot now living in Berlin, I've seen my fair share of historical sites, but there was something particularly special about this place. Maybe it's the contrast with the modern city that surrounds it, or perhaps it’s the palpable sense of history that permeates the air. Either way, I was captivated.
The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and shrines, but in the stories whispered by its ancient stones.
The palace itself is a sprawling complex of elegant buildings and meticulously manicured gardens. We joined a guided tour, which provided invaluable insights into the palace's history and significance. The guide explained that the palace was the residence of the Imperial Family until 1868 when the capital was moved to Tokyo. Walking through the grand halls and courtyards, I couldn't help but imagine the emperors and empresses who once walked these same paths. The architecture was stunning, a testament to the skill and artistry of Japanese craftsmen. The intricate details, the use of natural materials, and the harmonious blend of form and function were all truly remarkable.

After the palace, we strolled through the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, which surrounds the Imperial Palace. The garden is a vast green space, offering a welcome respite from the bustling city. It's a place where locals and tourists alike come to relax, exercise, and enjoy the beauty of nature. As we wandered along the winding paths, we admired the carefully landscaped gardens, the serene ponds, and the towering trees. It was mid-May, and the garden was in full bloom, with vibrant colors and fragrant scents filling the air. I even tried to identify some of the plants, drawing on my (admittedly limited) knowledge of Japanese flora. It was a perfect opportunity to unwind and reflect on the morning's adventures.

For lunch, we headed to Sakuragawa, a restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine. I was eager to try some authentic dishes, and Sakuragawa did not disappoint. The restaurant had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, with a small counter and a few tables. We ordered a selection of dishes, including sashimi, tempura, and a local specialty called obanzai, which consists of small, seasonal vegetable dishes. The flavors were delicate and refined, and the presentation was exquisite. It was a true culinary delight, a testament to the artistry and skill of Japanese chefs.

In the afternoon, we visited Heian Shrine, a relatively new shrine built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding. The shrine is dedicated to Emperor Kammu, the first emperor to reign from Kyoto, and Emperor Komei, the last emperor to reside in the city before the capital moved to Tokyo. The shrine's architecture is a partial replica of the original Imperial Palace from the Heian Period, built on a smaller scale. The vibrant red color of the buildings was striking against the backdrop of the lush green gardens. We explored the shrine grounds, admiring the intricate details of the architecture and the serene beauty of the gardens. It was a peaceful and contemplative experience, a chance to connect with Kyoto's rich history and spiritual heritage.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at French Dining Top of Kyoto, a revolving restaurant located on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto. I had heard rave reviews about the restaurant's exquisite French cuisine and its breathtaking panoramic views of the city. It seemed like the perfect way to end our day of regal exploration.

The restaurant was elegant and sophisticated, with a hushed atmosphere and attentive service. We were seated at a table by the window, and as the restaurant slowly rotated, we were treated to stunning views of Kyoto's skyline. The menu featured a selection of classic French dishes, prepared with the finest local ingredients. I opted for the tasting menu, which included a variety of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Each dish was a work of art, both visually and gastronomically. The flavors were rich and complex, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a truly memorable dining experience, a fitting end to a day of cultural immersion.
Before heading back to the hotel, we made a spontaneous stop at The Common One Bar Kyoto. Tucked away in a quiet corner of Gion, this bar is known for its expertly crafted cocktails and its intimate, speakeasy-like atmosphere. I had read about it online and was intrigued by its reputation as a hidden gem. Finding the entrance was a bit of an adventure in itself, adding to the bar's mystique. Inside, the bar was dimly lit and decorated in a traditional Japanese style, with tatami mats and wooden accents. The bartender was a true artist, meticulously crafting each cocktail with precision and care. I ordered a brandy-based cocktail, which was both delicious and visually stunning. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing, a chance to relax and soak in the atmosphere of Kyoto's nightlife.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Philosopher's Path, the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, and Gion Corner. I am particularly excited about the Philosopher's Path, as I've heard it's a beautiful walk along a canal, lined with cherry trees and temples. Lena is looking forward to visiting the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, as she has a passion for plants and flowers. As for me, I am eager to experience Gion Corner, where we can witness traditional Japanese performing arts.
As I sit here in our hotel room, reflecting on the day's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Kyoto is a truly magical city, a place where history and culture come alive. I feel so fortunate to be able to share this experience with my family, creating memories that we will cherish for years to come. And as I look forward to tomorrow's explorations, I know that our journey through Kyoto is far from over.
