A Day of Discovery in the Blue Pearl

Today in Chefchaouen was a blend of breathtaking vistas and intimate explorations. Jean-Pierre and I set out to capture the essence of this blue city, from its stunning panoramic views to its hidden corners and vibrant local life. It was a day filled with culinary delights and charming encounters, making it another unforgettable chapter in our Moroccan adventure.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Nous Nous Cafe. The cafe was charming, and the breakfast was simple but satisfying. Sipping on mint tea while watching the town slowly awaken was the perfect way to start our explorations. The crisp morning air and the soft sunlight filtering through the blue-washed buildings created a serene atmosphere that I wanted to hold onto forever.

After breakfast, we decided to seek out the famed panoramic view of the city. The climb was a bit steep, but the view from the top was more than worth it. From our vantage point, Chefchaouen unfolded before us in all its blue glory. The various shades of blue, from the palest sky blue to the deepest indigo, created a mesmerizing tapestry that stretched as far as the eye could see. Jean-Pierre, ever the architect, was particularly captivated by the way the light played off the buildings, creating a sense of depth and texture. I busied myself taking photos, trying to capture the magic of the moment, knowing full well that no photograph could ever truly do it justice.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its iconic blue streets, but in the hidden corners and the vibrant life that unfolds within them.

Next on our list was Derb Zaghdoud, a narrow, winding street known for its unique charm. As we wandered through the derb, we were immediately enveloped in the sights, sounds, and smells of local life. Children played in the narrow passageways, their laughter echoing off the blue walls. Artisans sat in their workshops, meticulously crafting leather goods and intricate metalwork. The air was filled with the aroma of spices and freshly baked bread. We paused to admire a particularly beautiful doorway, its intricate carvings a testament to the skill and artistry of the local craftsmen. We even stumbled upon Dar Meziana, located in Derb Zaghdoud, which looked like a peaceful and authentic riad.

For lunch, we chose Café Mundial, a popular spot known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. We shared a tagine, the rich, flavorful stew a perfect representation of Moroccan flavors. The tagine was served in a traditional earthenware pot, and the aroma alone was enough to make our mouths water. As we savored each bite, we talked about our favorite moments from the trip so far, marveling at how quickly the days were passing. It felt like just yesterday we were landing in Tangier, and now we were already nearing the end of our adventure.

In the late afternoon, we took a break at COFFEE BREAK chaouen. I ordered an iced coffee, which was delicious and refreshing. Jean-Pierre opted for a traditional mint tea. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge before continuing our explorations. The atmosphere was laid-back and inviting, and we found ourselves chatting with a couple from Spain who were also visiting Chefchaouen. We exchanged travel tips and stories, and it was a reminder of how travel can bring people together from all walks of life.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Tissemlal for dinner. The restaurant had been recommended to us for its authentic Moroccan dishes and cozy atmosphere. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was dimly lit, with traditional Moroccan lanterns casting a warm glow over the room. The menu featured a variety of local specialties, and we decided to try a few different dishes to get a taste of everything. We shared a couscous dish, the fluffy semolina topped with tender vegetables and flavorful meat. We also sampled a pastilla, a sweet and savory pie filled with pigeon and almonds. Each dish was a culinary masterpiece, a testament to the rich and diverse flavors of Moroccan cuisine.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, soaking in the atmosphere of Chefchaouen at night. The blue streets took on a different character in the darkness, the shadows adding a sense of mystery and intrigue. The air was filled with the sounds of music and laughter, as locals and tourists alike enjoyed the cool evening air. We stopped to admire a group of musicians playing traditional Moroccan music, their melodies filling the night air. It was the perfect way to end our day, a moment of pure magic that we would cherish forever.

Reflecting on today, I realized that Chefchaouen is more than just a pretty picture. It’s a living, breathing city with a rich culture and a warm, welcoming spirit. The panoramic views are stunning, but it’s the hidden corners and the everyday moments that truly capture the heart. As we prepare for our final full day in Chefchaouen, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we’ve had and the memories we’ve made. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Bab El Hammar and Bab el Mahrouk, and perhaps do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Jabir shop chefchaouen. I am sure Chefchaouen has a few more surprises in store for us.

As I write this, I am reminded of a quote by the great Italian writer, Cesare Pavese:

To travel is to live.

And today, in the blue streets of Chefchaouen, I truly felt alive. The colors, the sounds, the smells, the tastes – all of it combined to create an experience that was both exhilarating and deeply enriching. I am so grateful to be able to share this journey with Jean-Pierre, and I am already looking forward to the adventures that tomorrow will bring. I also realized that I forgot to pack my reusable water bottle and travel journal. I will need to remember those for our next adventure!

Ciao for now from Chefchaouen!
