Honmura's Hidden Treasures: A Day of Art and Culinary Delights

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Naoshima's Honmura district, a place where art and everyday life intertwine seamlessly. I set out to explore the Art House Project, sample local flavors, and soak in the atmosphere of this charming island. It was a day filled with unexpected discoveries and delightful moments.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Luke's Table. The gentle sea breeze and the prospect of a day filled with art put me in high spirits. I savored the fresh, locally sourced ingredients, a testament to Naoshima's commitment to sustainability, which is something I deeply appreciate.

Fueled up, I ventured into the Art House Project: Haisha. It's hard to describe the experience of stepping into what was once a dentist's home and office, now transformed into a vibrant, eclectic art installation by Shinro Ohtake. The house incorporates so many different elements, it feels like walking into a dreamscape. The Statue of Liberty replica was definitely a surprise! It made me think about the contrast between American ideals and the more quiet, introspective nature of Japanese art. It's a bold statement, and I found myself pondering its meaning long after I left. I even overheard another visitor mention that Haisha is a highlight of the Art House Project, and I couldn't agree more. The way Ohtake incorporates different styles is fascinating. Dreaming Tongue, the title of the work, perfectly captures the feeling of retracing a dream through taste and scent.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Next on the agenda was Miyanoura Gallery 6. This gallery, housed in a renovated pachinko parlor, is a testament to Naoshima's ability to breathe new life into old spaces. Architect Taira Nishizawa has created a space where visitors and locals can come together and relax, surrounded by thought-provoking art. I was particularly struck by how the natural light filtered through the louvers on the ceiling, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. It’s incredible how they were able to transform an old amusement arcade into a space where people and art can come together. I was also intrigued to learn that Miyanoura Gallery 6 is the first exhibition facility to be constructed in an area inhabited by the people of Naoshima. It’s a wonderful example of how art can be integrated into the community.

After immersing myself in the art scene, I decided to explore the natural beauty of Naoshima a bit more and headed to Kasaneiwa. Climbing the long stairway and narrow mountain road was quite the workout, but the view of the Seto Inland Sea from the top was well worth the effort. There's something mysterious and serene about the stacked rocks, and the fact that no one knows for sure whether they were placed there naturally or by human hands only adds to their allure. It felt like standing in a sacred space, connecting with the history and spirit of the island.

By this point, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I made my way to EAT LOCAL 直島食堂 for lunch. Located in Tsutsujiso, the restaurant offers stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea and a menu that celebrates local ingredients. I opted for the setouchi seasonal vegetable curry, and it was absolutely delicious. The vegetables were so fresh and flavorful, and the curry had just the right amount of spice. It was a perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring. I found out that Tsutsujiso, where the restaurant is located, is known as a seaside park stay, which sounds like a wonderful experience.

As the afternoon wore on, I felt the need for a little pick-me-up and decided to visit the Honmura Lounge & Archive. This place is more than just an information center; it's a hub for the Art House Project, a place where you can learn about the artists and architects involved, and a charming souvenir shop. I picked up a few postcards to send to Astrid and Maximilian, and enjoyed a cup of coffee while browsing the displays. It was a great way to deepen my understanding of the Art House Project and the island's art scene in general. I also overheard some other visitors planning their route for the Art House Project, which made me feel like I was part of a community of art enthusiasts.

For dinner, I decided to try Raumen Tsumu, a local ramen restaurant known for its affordable and flavorful dishes. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made me feel right at home. I ordered the tantanmen, a spicy minced meat ramen, and it was incredible. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. It was the perfect way to end a long day of exploring. It was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to savor its delicious offerings. I even chatted with a local who recommended pairing the ramen with a side of gyoza for a complete meal. I made a mental note to try that next time!
