Beyond the Walls: Discovering Naoshima's Soul
Today was a day for venturing beyond the well-trodden paths of Naoshima's famous museums. I wanted to experience the island's art scene on a more intimate level, to find the hidden gems that often go unnoticed in the shadow of masterpieces. Armed with my camera and a sense of adventure, I set out to explore the installations and local spots that truly capture the essence of this unique island.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Tee's DELI GROCERY. Located in a charming corner of the island, Tee's is known for its fresh, local ingredients and welcoming atmosphere. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly cooked rice. The meal was a delightful start to the day, providing the energy I needed for my explorations.

With breakfast finished, I made my way to the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. While usually reserved for guests of the Benesse House hotel, I was still able to appreciate the artistic and Feng Shui elements from the outside. The design, inspired by Feng Shui principles, was intriguing, and I could only imagine how relaxing it would be to soak in the herbal medicinal bath while gazing out at the Seto Inland Sea. Perhaps I'll find a way to experience it fully one day!

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next on my list was the Shipyard Works By Shinro Otake. This installation was a fascinating blend of art and industrial heritage. Shinro Ohtake, born in Tokyo, has created a remarkable space. The repurposed shipyard materials were transformed into striking works of art, reflecting both the history of the site and the beauty of the natural world. The dramatic structures against the backdrop of the sea and sky made for some incredible photo opportunities.

After immersing myself in the Shipyard Works, I decided to take a break and enjoy a leisurely lunch at Terrace Restaurant. The restaurant, located at Benesse House, offered stunning views of the Inland Sea. I savored a delicious meal of fresh seafood, expertly prepared with local ingredients. The serene atmosphere and breathtaking scenery made it a truly memorable dining experience.

With renewed energy, I ventured to Mikazukishoten, a charming coffee stand that also serves as a souvenir shop. As a librarian, I always appreciate a good cup of coffee and a unique memento to remember my travels. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as I stepped inside, and the friendly staff welcomed me with warm smiles. I ordered a latte and browsed the selection of handmade pottery and art prints, eventually choosing a beautiful ceramic mug as a souvenir.

I purchased a beautiful handcrafted ceramic bowl, a reminder of Naoshima's artistic spirit. The blend of coffee aroma and artistic craftsmanship made it a delightful experience.
For dinner, I chose NaoPAM/ Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda. This restaurant is known for its delicious fish set meals, featuring the freshest catches of the day. I opted for the grilled fish set, which included a variety of local favorites such as Spanish mackerel and sea bream. The flavors were exquisite, and the welcoming staff made me feel right at home.
