Art in Motion & Island Flavors
Today was a day of embracing Naoshima's unique blend of art and nature, coupled with some truly memorable culinary experiences. I set out to explore more of the island's outdoor installations and sample the local cuisine, and the day unfolded with a delightful mix of visual and gastronomic adventures.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Gumbo Hut Shioya. It might seem a bit unusual to start my day with Cajun food in Japan, but I had read so many good things about it that I had to try it. The owner, Buddy, was incredibly welcoming, and the gumbo was rich, flavorful, and surprisingly comforting. It was a generous serving, and the retro vibe of the place, with its 50s and 60s music, made for a unique and enjoyable start to the day. It reminded me of the small, quirky restaurants back in Ísafjörður, where the owners pour their heart and soul into the food and atmosphere.
Art isn't just something you look at; it's something that changes how you see the world.
Fueled by the delicious gumbo, I headed towards the Benesse Art Site to see George Rickey's Three Squares Vertical Diagonal. The kinetic sculpture is located near the Benesse House Museum, and the walk there was beautiful. The sculpture itself is a mesmerizing display of balance and motion. The gentle breeze caused the squares to move in a graceful, almost meditative way. It was fascinating to watch how the sculpture interacted with the environment, the sunlight glinting off the stainless steel and the surrounding landscape providing a perfect backdrop. I spent a good while just observing the interplay of art and nature, sketching in my notebook and trying to capture the essence of the moment.

Next on my list was Yokobou Park, a serene retreat offering stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea. The park is a bit of a walk from the main art areas, but the tranquility was well worth the effort. I found a quiet spot overlooking the water and spent some time simply enjoying the peace and quiet. The park is beautifully maintained, with lush greenery and well-manicured paths. It felt like a perfect place to escape the summer heat and reconnect with nature. I thought of Maximilian and Astrid and how much they would have enjoyed this peaceful spot. Perhaps next time, I'll bring them along.

From Yokobou Park, I made my way to the Walking Ark, another outdoor art installation. Inspired by Noah's Ark, the sculpture features four white and blue mountains, creating a whimsical and thought-provoking piece. It reminded me a bit of Nordic mythology, particularly the stories of mountains holding up the sky. I walked around the installation, admiring the design and the way it seemed to blend into the landscape. The sun was high in the sky, casting long shadows and adding to the surreal atmosphere.

Lunch was at Okonomiyaki Umikko, a charming family-run restaurant. I had read about their okonomiyaki and was eager to try it. The restaurant is located near the bus stop, making it easily accessible. The English menu was a great help, and the owners were incredibly friendly. I ordered the Umikko okonomiyaki, and it was delicious. The savory pancake was cooked to perfection, with a wonderful mix of flavors and textures. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and I felt like I was getting a true taste of local life. I overheard a couple of other tourists mentioning Guest House Seaside Namihei, and how the owners had recommended Umikko - a sure sign it's a good spot!

In the late afternoon, I decided to treat myself to a drink at Kon'nichiwa, a cozy bar near Honmura port. The bar had a laid-back atmosphere, and the staff were very welcoming. I ordered a local beer and sat on the terrace, enjoying the view of the harbor. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. I chatted with some of the locals, learning more about the island and its history. They were all incredibly proud of Naoshima and its art scene, and their enthusiasm was infectious.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Restaurant EN, known for its modern take on Japanese cuisine. The restaurant had a sophisticated ambiance, and the service was impeccable. I opted for the tasting menu, which featured a range of seasonal dishes. Each course was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. It was a culinary journey that showcased the best of Japanese ingredients and techniques. The meal was a bit of a splurge, but it was well worth it. It reminded me of some of the fine dining experiences Maximilian and I have enjoyed in Hannover.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on all that I had experienced. Naoshima is truly a special place, where art and nature come together in a harmonious and inspiring way. The island's culinary scene is equally impressive, with a range of options to suit every taste and budget. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this unique destination and to immerse myself in its culture and beauty. I realized I had forgotten to pack sunscreen and a portable charger, essentials for tomorrow!
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima and Shipyard Works By Shinro Otake. I am also hoping to visit Mikazukishoten, a local shop. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems Naoshima has in store for me.
