Whispers of the Wind, Echoes of the Heart

Today, I ventured to Teshima, a smaller island near Naoshima, known for its profound artistic experiences. It was a day of introspection, a journey that transcended mere sightseeing and touched something deeper within me. The minimalist art and serene landscapes created a space for reflection, a welcome pause in the whirlwind of life.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Yayoda. I enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast, fueling up for the day’s exploration. The fresh seafood and perfectly cooked rice were a delightful start, reminding me of the simple pleasures in life.

The ferry ride to Teshima was smooth, offering stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea. The gentle breeze and the rhythmic sound of the waves were incredibly soothing. As we approached the island, I could see the lush green hills and the scattered settlements, a stark contrast to the more bustling Naoshima.

The first destination was the renowned Teshima Art Museum. Walking towards it, I felt a sense of anticipation. The museum is nestled in a rice terrace, blending seamlessly with the natural landscape. The architecture, designed by Ryue Nishizawa and artist Rei Naito, is a masterpiece in itself – a concrete shell with two large oval openings that invite the elements inside.

Stepping inside the museum was like entering another world. The space was vast and empty, save for the tiny droplets of water that emerged from the floor. These droplets meandered across the surface, merging and diverging, creating an ever-changing landscape. The sunlight streamed through the openings, casting ethereal shadows that danced with the water.

The Teshima Art Museum is not just a place to see art; it's a space to feel, to breathe, and to connect with the essence of existence.

I sat there for what felt like hours, simply observing the interplay of light, water, and shadow. It was a meditative experience, a reminder of the beauty and fragility of life. The museum encourages silence and contemplation, allowing visitors to immerse themselves fully in the present moment. No photography is allowed inside, which only added to the sense of being completely present.

Leaving the Teshima Art Museum, I felt a sense of peace and clarity. The experience had stripped away the noise and distractions of everyday life, leaving me with a profound sense of calm. I walked along the coastal path, enjoying the stunning views of the sea and the surrounding islands. The air was fresh and clean, and the sun warmed my skin.

Next on the itinerary was Teshima 8 Million Lab. This small gallery space showcases art installations by Sputniko!, exploring the concept of yaoyorozu, which refers to the presence of gods in all living beings and objects. The exhibit included genetic modifications of silkworms and other thought-provoking displays that blended art and technology.

The Teshima 8 Million Lab was a fascinating contrast to the Teshima Art Museum. While the museum was minimalist and contemplative, the lab was vibrant and stimulating. It challenged my perceptions and sparked my curiosity, making me think about the intersection of art, science, and culture.

For lunch, I stopped at Issen, a restaurant located in the Benesse House Museum area. The restaurant offered a range of seasonal meals, and I opted for a traditional Japanese set lunch. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, a testament to the care and attention to detail that is so characteristic of Japanese cuisine.

After lunch, I spent some time exploring the charming village of Teshima. I stumbled upon Shimacoya, a delightful café and eclectic retreat. It was more than just a place to grab a coffee; it served as a guest house, a used bookstore, and a variety store. I enjoyed a cup of locally sourced coffee while browsing the selection of used books. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, reflecting the local culture and creative spirit of the island.

In the late afternoon, I made my way to Nagomi for dinner. Located within the Naoshima welfare center, Nagomi offered a unique dining experience, blending good food with a sense of community. I enjoyed a hearty Japanese meal, savoring the fresh, local ingredients. The communal canteen-like environment encouraged social interactions, and I had the pleasure of chatting with some of the locals.

As the day drew to a close, I boarded the ferry back to Naoshima. The sunset over the Seto Inland Sea was breathtaking, painting the sky with hues of orange, pink, and purple. I stood on the deck, watching the islands fade into the distance, feeling grateful for the experiences of the day.

Teshima had been a journey of the soul, a reminder of the power of art and nature to heal and inspire. It was a day of quiet contemplation, a welcome escape from the noise and distractions of modern life. As I reflect on my day, I'm reminded of a quote by Rei Naito, the artist behind the Teshima Art Museum:

The world is born from the small.

This quote encapsulates the essence of Teshima – a small island with a profound impact, a place where the simple things in life take on a deeper meaning.

Tomorrow, I plan to continue my exploration of Naoshima, visiting the George Rickey Three Squares Vertical Diagonal, Yokobou Park, and Walking Ark. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Kon'nichiwa, a local bar, to reflect on my experiences and connect with fellow travelers.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I took one last look at the stars above, feeling the cool night air against my skin. It's moments like these that make traveling solo so rewarding, allowing for a deeper connection with oneself and the world.

As I prepare for another day of artistic discovery, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. Naoshima and Teshima have already exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I am also grateful that I remembered to buy sunscreen, but will need to remember to buy a portable charger tomorrow.

Until then, goodnight from Naoshima.
